I was brought up Roman Catholic and confirmed. I'm thinking about fine tuning and becoming Orthodox. I spent a year going to a Greek Orthodox church and found it most excellent.

Jewish, was Bar Mitzvahed, but I'm certainly not that into religion much, I celebrate the holidays with my family, more of a traditional thing than anything. My fiancee is like me in terms of not really caring, and she's Irish Catholic so you can bet that ruffled a few feathers on both sides a long time ago. After 5 years though no one cares anymore.

I'm RC, always have, and always will since the Jesuits did a hellofa good job teaching it to me in high school.

But hey, ultimately the most important thing about religion is you find the one that works best for you (translation: Yes Virginia, there is no "correct" religion)

I believe that God created man and ever since then, man has been trying to build a box to keep God in.

Religion has been used too often as a means of controlling people, and that's why so many people resent it these days. Look at Ireland and the Middle East for recent examples of what human beings do to each other in the "name of God" and which church is right. Apparently they skipped over the part where Jesus prayed to his Father "Let them be one, just as You and I are One".

I consider myself more of a spiritual person than a "religious" one. If your church works for you, great. I feel much closer to God up in the mountains or on the beach than in some building singing boring songs and passing a plate around.

I don't have any problem with people's religious beliefs as long as they walk their talk and are not hypocrites. Granted we're all human beings and not one is perfect, but there are those who deliberately use "religion" to push hatred and opression and it's those people who will be in for a big shock when they stand before their Creator on judgment day.

Laughing My Ass Off.....

Yeah Many years ago I used to work at a fish n chips place. I tried to get Friday nights off during Lent because every Catholic in town would be eating there that night. It was insane!

But when you think about it.... wasn't the entire church really started by a couple of fishermen? I believe that's what Peter and several of the other disciples did for a living....

I am Roman Catholic and go to church every Sunday...
I happen to be very lucky to have a very cool Pastor and when he says Mass, I take a lot of it with me.
This has a lot to do with why I go every week. I need someone to translate the meaning, and if I don't have a good translator, I'm either lost or disinterested.
He relates well with the younger members of my parish, he puts so many things into perspective without beating us over the head with it.

I'm Catholic too...and I do go to church regularly, but I also feel that faith is a private thing.

I teach a class for kids who are about to be confirmed...and NO I'm not a bible waving, scripture quoting nut either. There usually is a waiting list of kids to get in my class...I am a really good teacher! http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/cool.gif
I use music in every class...their music... helps them to get beyond the structured boring (in their minds) part of religion.

I would also say that I am most definitely a follower of Van Halenism, a branch of the Catholic Church? http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/confused.gif

i don't believe. i am a non believer. my family goes to church, i stay home. it didn't really hit me as something i believed in. it doesn't make sense to me. if someone asked me if i believed in god, i'd say, "sure. eddie." http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/tongue.gif
but the big guy upstairs in heaven has no significance to me. i celebrate christmas and easter, primarily because my family is that way. but i'm okay with celebrating "the time of the season" and giving and stuff like that, but god doesn't make sense. darwin and evolution makes so much more sense to me.

Raised pentecostal, and still attending an Assembly of God church, but I don't get into "religion" too much. To me, a personal relationship with Jesus Christ has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with a day-to-day walk that's more fulfilling than anything else I've known. When you get your eyes off of God and onto Man, that's when religion creeps in. http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/frown.gif

The Penecostals have taken a bad rap lately because of boneheads like Swaggart, Bakker, etc. but the majority of us are regular people who struggle with issues just like everyone else. The cool thing is, we have a Savior who is alive today and has paid the price for our sins on the cross. http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

Pretty much where I stand too FORD... We were bought up to go to an Anglican church, did the sunday school thing, all the rest of it...

I think, myself the whole essence to being on the earth is to see things for yourself, experience things as they happen, and draw your own conclusions. This may well mean you think different on the subject of god on a day-to-day basis. To me, that's OK, and to question it is healthy.I'm not sure that sitting around singing and just being told the right's and wrong's is what it's all about. I think it comes down to knowing yourself whats right and wrong, recognising when you do something wrong, and being big to enough fix it, and make things right.

Sometimes I wonder if I hold some beliefs because I dont wanna face up to the alternative (ie, when we die, we rot). Sometimes I'm sure there's something there... But if there is something to it, I'm pretty sure I wont be judged harshly for looking sideways occasionally while I'm travelling the path.

Shit. Does any of that make any sense at all? I need beer!

Nice to see we can have this thread going and not have everyone bashing each other - shows what a class family us VH folk are! http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif I grew up in a very healthy church family - Dad just retired after 40 years as a music minister (choirs, composing, bell choirs, etc.). Grew up in the Dutch Reformed Church (very similar to Presbyterian)in New Jersey till I was 12, and then 20 years in United Methodist after we moved for Dad's job. I'm one of the lucky few that didn't have religion pushed on me - my family let the way they lived speak instead. Never been ashamed as a result.

BTW FORD, excellent post! http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif
