i was wondering how you'd rate EVH Pianist Skills.
the intro to 'Right now' sounds pretty cool, but is it as hard to play, say, as Eruption?

Ed is a very solid piano player. With his sense for timing....forget about it!

I'd give him a "9", just cause of his badass rhythm and proggressions that come out of his piano playing ...

I think he is an awesome pianist! I may be wrong, but I seem to remember an interview where Ed said he had won 1st prize in a piano category while he was in college. Anyone else know naything about that? Glenn?

Eddie, in high school won that prize two years in a row. As far as college was concerned he went because it was accepted by his parents. http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/wink.gifhttp://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gifhttp://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/cool.gif ...

So did you rate him? No ... http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/confused.gifhttp://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/wink.gif
You can honestly say that by those two songs that he is brilliant? "Right Now" seems like an easy song, "not enough" sounds like an easy song cause it really doesn't have "fluent" flow to it. So "in that case" ...
NB's Top 3 Piano Riffs ...
Mine all Mine(very fast, takes some skill)
I'll Wait(you can get "lost" on that "flow")
Jump(it can really "stretch" your hands)

Those are all cool, but they aren't exactly the greatest piano riffs.
For example, If Eddie played Not Enough as a piano instrumental I could sit there , and listen to it and think wow this is brilliant, but if Eddie played Jump as a piano istrumental, I would probably get bored of it quickly.
I could call the Not Enough, and Right Now riff modern classic piano pieces (Like Beetoven, or Mozart) but I couldn't say the same about any of the songs you listed NB.

Whoa, I entirely missed this thread before! Of course, I gotta post because I'm all about the keyboards.
First of all, I just wanna say that guitar players who play keyboards sometimes have problems because when you play keys, you want your fingers to be really sensitive, but if you've been playing guitar for a while, you just get callouses. It makes it hard to be really good at both, and this is one of the reasons why Eddie is so amazing.

quote:
Originally posted by No Bozo's:

For me..."Right Now" wasn't too hard to learn, but it's hard to play consistently. You have to show a lot of control. In fact, I think piano teachers should have their students practice the intro to develop strength, control, and "finger independence."
I think the most impressive thing about "Not Enough" is the emotion, expression, whatever you want to call it. Some people just play the piano and it sounds really dry and boring. Not so with this song!

quote:
Mine all Mine(very fast, takes some skill)

I like the way the keyboards in this song and in WCTBL are a lot less deliberate than, say, in Love Walks In or Dreams or Jump. They're more backgroundy, more like a rhythm than a lead, and it makes it hard to pick them out. It also makes it hard to listen very closely to what's going on with the keys, so I don't think I can really use them to judge how good a job Eddie is doing.

quote:
I'll Wait(you can get "lost" on that "flow")

Huh? What does that mean? I just thing this song shows that Ed is a genius when it comes to composing. This song is just really original...there's nothing else remotely like it.

quote:
Jump(it can really "stretch" your hands)

I always do octaves with my left hand, so I can't say it's a stretch, but the solo takes a lot of work. You need the finger independence thing again. The rest of it isn't really hard. It's so much fun to play!
NB, do you play keys? If so, man, I didn't know that.

Right on LS, way to shed a new light on this thread n' shit.

quote:

I had no idea though that progression would raise havac with hands like that. Practice makes perfect! Oh and didn't Ed say one time about sitting there getting ruler slapped with his PT when he was 8 or 9?

quote:
I like the keyboards in this song and WCTBL are a lot less deliberate than, say, in LCWI or Jump.

Cool, good point there LS. The way I saw it to was prob from the same vantage point as you did, if that makes sense. Just the fast groove in it I woulda thought been a challenge to keep up with n' shit.

quote:
There's nothing else remotely like it.

You know that's what I almost said about it to, only that I said it had a "mid-evil" presence in it. Meaning yah maybe it did resemble a Mozart or Bach.

quote:
The rest of isn't really that hard. It's so much fun to play.

Just that first line of chords dah dah dah dah, dah, dah dah dah dada da sounds like stretching. And let me tell you Ed's solo's take much finger independence on guitar too.

quote:
NB, do you play keys? If so, man, I didn't know that

Hell no, the only time I play or try to play keys is during any holiday when my neices and nephews are over at my parents house. In fact I wrote this tune last thanksgiving called "the day of the turkey" lolhttp://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/wink.gif ...
