I was wondering when this would follow http://216.10.25.192/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif
I'll do the same thing I did in the Hagar thread, and give a ranking too.
VH1 : 10/10 (A defining moment in rock and roll history. Catapulted VH into the rock scene. An instant rock classic, one of the top 100 albums of all time. Every song displays attitude and in your face machismo. This album will stand the test of time.
1984 : 9/10 (A defining album of the 80's. Contains one of the most defining and recognizable songs for the band, and for the 80's decade in "Jump". Brought the band from rock stars to mainstream superstardom.
Fair Warning : 8.8/10 (A highly underrated album by the general public. Contains a fan favorite, and VH classic in "Unchained". Represented a dark period in the bands history as tensions rose, and it shows in the music. Dark, heavy, and eerie music along with Roth's racy lyrics have made this an indelible VH classic.)
Wome and Children First : 8.3/10 (Very solid Van Halen album with such classics as "..And the Cradle Will Rock" and "Everybody Wants Some". Included "Could This Be Magic", and acoustic number which represented a departure for the band.)
Van Halen 2 : 8/10 (VH's second album, not as gritty or raw as their first album. Included successful radio hits like "Somebody Get Me a Doctor" and the instant classic "Dance the Night Away". Showed that VH weren't a one hit wonder.)
Diver Down : 7.3/10 (The low mark is mainly for unoriginality. Containing nearly half cover songs, which were redone very well. The original songs which were included were all very high quality such as "Secrets", "Little Guitars", and "The Full Bug". Contained radio staples "Dancing In the Streets" and "Pretty Woman". I like the sound of this album, it sound a lot 'cleaner' whatever that means. The addition of 'Big Bad Bill' and 'Happy Trails' and 'Pretty Woman' made it a real 'feel good' album, coming off of "Fair Warning". Overall a solid album regardless of the covers.

Sheeeet.... How can I rank them?! http://216.10.25.192/vhlforum/smilies/confused.gif
1. Fair Warning. (Some peeps bitch about how short this album is, but come on, http://216.10.25.192/vhlforum/smilies/rolleyes.gif I'd rather have a 34 minute FW than a 72 minute VH3, you know? http://216.10.25.192/vhlforum/smilies/wink.gif )
2. Van Halen. The mo' fo' that started it all. http://216.10.25.192/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif If only it had a better mix, it would probably be my #1.
3. VH2. This album just nudges out WACF for third on my list. I get a warmer feeling after listening to it. "DOA" is the best song off this album, in my opinion. (also my #1 favorite song http://216.10.25.192/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif )
4. WACF. Definitely rocked harder than VH2, but... how can I say it? Damn it, I don't know how. http://216.10.25.192/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif
5. 1984. A monster album, better production, a lot of appeal in terms of songwriting. I actually don't like placing it #5, but it's SO damn close.
6. DD. If it weren't for "Dancin' In The Streets" (a cover that wouldn't have made it on 3 http://216.10.25.192/vhlforum/smilies/redface.gif ) I'd really consider this to be #5 or #4 even. It's a different sounding album than the earlier ones. I liked the moods on it.
Let's just shake things up a bit...
1. Fair Warning
2. A Little Ain't Enough
3. Van Halen
4. Diver Down
5. Skyscraper
6. 1984
7. Eat 'Em And Smile
8. Van Halen 2
9. Women And Children First
10. Your Filthy Little Mouth
11. DLR Band
12. Crazy From The Heat (it's so short...)

Okay - today's picks:
Fair Warning - took awhile to grow on me, but now I recognize it as the best. "Hear About It Later" favourite song from it.
Van Halen - the original - what a sound. Never heard anything like it before, never heard anything like it since. "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" probably the fave here, but that ending to "Eruption" gets me everytime, too.
1984 - pure polish - the band at the top. "Jump" was an immediate hit, probably ties with "Panama" as my favourites off this one.
Women And Children First - first real changes to the Van Halen sound. Love "Everybody Wants Some!!", "Could This Be Magic?" and "In A Simple Rhyme". Only weak link is "Tora Tora"/"Loss Of Control" - would probably like "Loss Of Control" better if I knew what the heck he was saying!
Van Halen II - nothing really sets it above the others, so it goes below them! Some great tunes, nonetheless - "Dance The Night Away" was the first Van Halen song I heard and still one of my favourites, along with "Light Up The Sky", "Women In Love..." and "Beautiful Girls". Not as clean sounding as the first album.
Diver Down - something's gotta be first, and something's gotta be last. A great album, but it just breezes by quicker than the others for some reason - I like the covers, but maybe one or two originals would've made the album seem more substantial. "Intruder"/"(Oh) Pretty Woman", "Little Guitars" are top guns here.
