View Full Version : How About A Peaceful Thread
So let's do something totally innocuous and unrelated to this "reunion" thing.
What song has his best backups?
What song has his best bass playing?
Good thread. I have always thought that VHII had Mike's best bass work. The bass lines on Beautiful Girls and Outta Love Again are great examples of what Mike brought to the table bass-wise. Not "shredding" or flamboyant, but they were vital parts of the songs. Mike's playing on that disc has soul.
I'd probably go with Fair Warning as his best bass work.
For some reason I just love the backing vocals of "Top Of The World," and a lot of that is his voice.

Best vocals: Hear About it Later, Humans Being

Most of the stuff on the first three albums feature my favorite backup vocals from Mike.
As for bass playing, I'd go the first four albums. Seems after Fair Warning he wasn't getting the chance to contribute as much as he did on those first four albums. At least on record, that is...
Best Bass:
Poundcake
You're No Good
In A Simple Rhyme
Best Backing Vox:
When it's Love
In A Simple Rhyme
Humans Being
Light Up The Sky

Gotta go with Brett on this one.... exactly what I would have said!
There's a part of Poundcake that I always dig, and it's just Mike thumping the shit out of the E. It's the beginning of the last chorus after Ed's little break....I just think it sounds so fucking cool....THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP

I absolutely hate this song, but I'd say if there was one highlight it would be Mike's vocals. Damn, its incredible, especially the "na-na-na-na-na" part at the end.
In A Simple Rhyme too. Just so melodic. I also loved his live vocal additions to "Little Guitars."

While its another song I don't like, I'd say he shines on "Get Up." He fucking SCREAMS on that song, but still sounds good.
Same goes for "Source of Infection." OU812 may be his best vocal on a Hagar era album, I'd say. Too bad the bass is so far under everything else...

Tuff call on the backing vocals thing. I'd lean toward "Simple Rhyme" Dave-era, "Black And Blue" Sam-era.
Bass part, probably "Mean Street". Always liked the fade on "Best of Both Worlds" too.
Sound-wise, definitely 'Fair Warning' and 'FUCK'. As simple as the 'Poundcake' bassline is, it works PERFECT for the song.
I hate lists like these. I'll wanna change it probably in 5 minutes.

Definitely my favoirte VH tune on keys. It has, without a doubt, my favorite intro to any VH song. I don't know why, it just clicks for me.

Yeah, that's a cool version too. They did that a few times on the amphitheatre leg and in Japan, if I recall. I have a show from Jones Beach four days after the Toronto gig and they played it. While quality could be better, it's still an interesting listen.

See, now when this song came out....I had no idea that was all-Mike we were hearing in the back there. I just remember thinking to myself, "Damn....Ed sounds great on the mic there".
The video featured him prominently mouthing those parts, so I naturally assumed the backing vocals were based on Ed. Oooooooops...... :D

I feel same way about that one the way VHR2k5 feels about "When It's Love". The chorus is like nails on a chalkboard to me.:scared:

I agree on all of this. Can't believe I forgot RWTD. Its so simple, but it's such a memorable bassline in VH history.
Oh, man... awesome Mike moments on VH stuff...
Mike's bass opens both the I and II albums. When was the last time you heard four stright quarter notes of the same note ('Eb') and knew exactly what the song was? "Runnin' With The Devil" of course!
"Feel Your Love Tonight" background vocals. Classic.
Not just Mike's playing, but his tone on Fair Warning was awesome and much more pronounced than the previous three albums. Might be Mike's best tone out of the six pack.
Whether you like the song or not, Mike rides the melody with his harmony on "Pretty Woman" almost the whole way.
Both his outro bass riffs and background vocals on "Best Of Both Worlds."
Yup... the "When It's Love" b-vox are awesome. So are the ones on "Cabo Wabo."
I think I know what bass riff Brett was talking about on "Poundcake." Mike starts out riding an 'E' an octave higher than he did in the other choruses, then jumps up another octave again just after "long lost receipe" line.
Mike pumps right along in "Pleasure Dome" and actually kinda grooves in "Right Now." His tone on FUCK was actually in the mix, which was a nice change from the two prior albums.
Background vocals on "Top Of The World"--the really high part. That part always goes away just as the song starts to fade and what's so cool is I like how it marks the transition to the outro.
Kick ass playing and tone again during the solo section of "Feelin'."
We love Mad Anthony!

Yep he does the low E, then he goes up an octave, I'm talking about that whole part, not just the octave. And the bass is definitely louder in the mix in that section too. I just love that thumping there. When it goes to the last "Home grown, down home" the bass does drop back into the mix too.

Not being nasty here but I am not going to give any favorite harmonies because they are a group effort. You can't sing a harmony with one pitch. A harmony is in itself a chord therefore it takes two to tango. Without Eddie, Dave or Sammy singing underneath Mike, the harmonies would suffer. Just like Mike playing supported Eddie's playing, Eddie and Dave's lower pitch, supported Mike's wail.
However his best playing in my opinion was the walking bass line at the end of Beautiful Girls. That part drives the outro of that song and just gives me goose bumps. I know walking bass lines are common throughout music but its the perfect bass part for an about perfect song.

Mike himself has commented on the bass line for The Seventh Seal. The interviewer was insinuating that Mike is just an average player and Mike responded with "you try and keep the tempo to The Seventh Seal." I'm paraphrasing and I wish I knew where I read that but I do remember reading it.
As for backing vocals, I'd go with Feel Your Love Tonight and When It's Love as two great one's.

I can't believe no one else has mentioned this. Other than Runnin' With The Devil, it has to be his most instantly recognizable bass line. It's my favorite too.

Feel your love tonight & I'm the one are two I'll always remember in terms of background vocals on studio albums. Boots are another entity in and of itself. What a huge void to go unfilled, sad indeed.

I personally think Mikey's best vocals were in the Dave days. Great ones with Sammy naturally, but he was as much of that early VH sounds as Ed's guitar. To me anyway. All of Mike's background vocals are stellar, but personally, I really love VHI and VHII the best.
The vocal arrangements w/Dave, Mike, Ed, (and sometimes Al) are genius. The way their voices blend is right up there with the Beach Boys, Eagles, or Simon and Garfunkel to my ears, only the music kicks.
I'm a huge CVH fan, and I think Mikey's voice contrasts with Dave's very well.
As far as MA's bass playing, I'd also have to say the first two albums. I'm the One, Light Up the Sky, DOA. Pretty much everything.

This thread is very weird. I haven't seen Brett post this many times in one thread, a positive thread at that, in many years.
I didn't see anybody mention MA's work on "Drop Dead Legs" which means you all suck, and I rule. I believe I've read that DDL is Mikey's favorite song, and I can see why.
The sound of MA/DLR's vocals and Ed's guitar has aided this brotha in the disrobing of a few females over the years. THAT chemistry is what hooked me into this band, as well as Alex's jungle drums.
After having a few drinks friday night, I'm buzzin pretty good and decided to put on WACF. I start with TYWH, and then head to In A Simple Rhyme. I can't imagine either song without that thumping bass, and killer harmonies. Those vocals were/are apart of that unique Van Halen sound. A sound that hasn't been recreated yet.
And just an example of his killer bass licks, listen to Ed's solo during Cabo Wabo on the RHRN vhs/cd/dvd. That's a great example of laying down a perfect background for Ed to do his thing. Mike always knew when not to go crazy and just stay in the pocket. As a musician, he'll forever have my respect.

Mike has said his background vocal role became a little more work when Sammy joined the band because he was finding himself doing even more important harmonies that followed the lead more and were higher.

I'm there. WIL still gets a lot of heat for being a closing song, but I personally thought it turned into an all-out upbeat jam. I also really liked them opening with "Jump." It was a HUGE hit, is one of those songs everyone knows, and showed that the band wasn't trying to push the '04 tour as being all about Sammy but rather VH in general.

Huge Mike fan! Mike is very underrated as a bassist. He plays what's best for the song and helps make everyone else in the band sound great.
As a bassist I really dig his playing on Poundcake, Panama, Beautiful Girls, D.O.A., So This Is Love (live from Oakland '81 is killer), Romeo Delight, A.F.U. (you're probably laughing that I picked one off of OU812 right? . . . despite being buried in the mix, great supportive playing during the solo), Pleasure Dome (ridiculously locked-in groove at a swift tempo).
When I think of stellar background vocals/harmonies, I think of Jamie's Cryin', When It's Love, Top of the World, I'm the One.

Mike should be in any version of VH but you know what his exclamation is? Those searing fking background vocals. Mike is a great bass player and entertainer (for a rock band etc) but his background vocals are superhuman. If you will that was always one of Mike's strongest super powers.

I thought his best work was on FUCK. But, in terms of vocals it's either OU812 or Van Halen. He is the best background vocalist in the business IMHO.
I love reading about the appreciation for Mike and his background vocals especially.
I really latched onto the lead vocal accompanied by a parallel harmony concept in my early songwriting days, and it has everything to do with the influence of MA. In my band now, I am the primary background vocalist, and sure enough I do the MA high part thing on a LOT of the choruses.
Thanks Mike!
