Who does everyone think is the most overrated guitarist? My vote is Hendrix.

I think Joe Satriani is a little overrated. Yes, he is a very good guitarist, but I wouldn't put him on the same level as Eddie or Steve Vai.

Just my opinion....

OK, if Hendrix is overated, then I might as well put Clapton in the mix. I know that Clapton is Eddie's biggest influence, but songs like "Lay Down Sally", and "I Shot the Sheriff" don't convince me he is this guitar god that he has been made out to be.

Hendrix is overrated. All his guitar work sounds similar. And he's a selfish guitarist. Some of his solos last for days.
Clapton is a guitar god, but he has made his fair share of lame-ass songs.
Page is a great guitarist, but no god.
I love Satch, but he's no Eddie. I would like to see them team up on a track, but that's a pipe dream.
Vai is the most overrated guitar player of them all IMHO. His stuff just irritates me to no end.
Joe Perry blows like a wind tunnel. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/wink.gif

Top Jimmy, I agree with you on Clapton. I think the best work of his career was with Cream. "Crossroads" smokes. Another of my favorites is "Strange Brew" Clapton sang the hell out of that song.

Bonnie Raite (sp),

There are few things that I hate, I mean hate more then slide playing.

The only person who can do it well is David Gilmour, and that's because when he does it, it doesn't really sound like slide playing.

I hate slide playing!

I like Joe Perry, but I'm not going to waste server space explaining why or to try to convince anyone to think otherwise...

I also like Hendrix, and don't think he is overrated one bit - you have to place him in the context of his time...

I think the "Clapton is God" thing was a bit overrated, though I like much of his work and bought my first guitar (a "Blackie" strat) because of him.

Vai - great guitarist, but way overrated...

Satch - not overrated, and more soulful than Vai.

Jeff Beck - great guitarist without a thing to say musically.

Page - compositionally gifted, though as a player has good and bad gigs. Overrated - I've never really felt his influence...

Who's overated? F**king Kirk Hammet.
Wah on every damn lead. His vibrato sounds like a nervous twitch. He's played for what 25 years?, taken lessons from Satriani, barely does any songwriting (so he's got all kinds of time to work on his chops and tone), recorded how many albums, Yet he sounds like he just started playing four years ago.

OK I've vented.

jimmy
06.08.00, 06:47 PM
Vai

Saw him on that G3 Tour and had to leave the show he sucked so much. That's when I realized I liked songwriters that utilized 6 strings on a piece of wood, rather than people that use the same piece of wood as an extentsion of their penis.

Rokgtar
06.08.00, 07:11 PM
Here's more...

Kirk Hammett - I absolutely agree!

Bonnie Raitt - In with a good crowd,(thats why she gets alot of awards and such IMO) but she couldn't touch Warren Haynes on slide on her best day...

Neil Young - that guy just can't fucking play electric guitar. He should be banned from even owning one.

Hurl Jam - some of their stuff is ok, but much of it makes me cringe...

Rokgtar
06.08.00, 08:13 PM
One more - Jimmie Vaughan...

Talk about a no-talent shmoe - he can't play the guitar 1/100th as good as his late bro. He and Bonnie Raitt are the same - in with the insiders of the industry. All you ever see him doing nowadays is hosting all-star jams where everyone gets together at the end to play 'Johnny B. Goode". He can't play guitar for shit.

Every guitarist listed here has been overrated in some ways.
My definition of overrated is a guy that is ALWAYS cited as the best, the composer, shits here and there.
So far, guitarists that have always been present in magazines, medias and newspapers as the overall best are:
Jimi Hendrix (he started this, he invented that, he played the first solo, ecc...)
Jimmy Page (same for Hendrix)
Steve Vai (he's unreachable, he plays like no one else can, he plays this, tapping, 7string guitars, ecc.)
Eric Clapton
These guys at least "invented" something in their own ways. And they were ahead for their times. Steve Vai still is. The other were.
I'm pissed off at guys like the new generation ones: they play the same combination of two chords, the compositions suck and are all the same, and they aren't able to improvise or solo in any way. Korn, Limp Bizkit, Kirk Hammett, more than half of the guitarists since grunge came is way overrated.

I think everybody that has dogged Hendrix need to consider the time in which he came around. Nobody played like Hendrix during his time. His impact on guitarist was as big as Eddie's in the late 70's. You ask any guitarists, from Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn (R.I.P), Pete Townsend, and many more of his contemporaries, they would say Hendrix was king of his time. Definatley a breakthrough player. I'll get loads of disagreements, but I'm cool with that. That's what a mature discussion is all about.http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gifhttp://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif Rock on my Van Halen brothas.

Malph, as a musician myself, I've learned over the years that it's one thing to be able to play like the great ones. But it's another thing to create and invent those solo's and guitar parts that you are talking about. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

LMAO, Malph!

Vai is a genius, IMHO. For instance, on his "Flexable" record, he recorded a woman talking, then proceeded to transcribe each syllable that she uttered to sheet music. In other words, he converted the pitch and tone of her voice to musical notes. He then played back what he transcribed and dubbed it over the woman talking. Stuff like that blows my mind!

(Ed is still the better songwriter, though.)

Hendrix is overrated?????? 90% of the bands everyone here likes probably wouldn't exist in their known form without Jimi, including VH. He completely revolutionised how the electric guitar was played. Sure he didn't have the technical chops of a Vai or Malmsteen but he conveyed more emotion with one note than those two guys did in their whole career - and it was the late 60s.

I think Keith Richards is a great guitarist too. He does what he does, cool riffs with alternate tunings and greatly schooled in many types of music. He leaves the lead playing to the lead guitarists mainly - Richards/Taylor circa '69-'73 live were untouchable. Ronnie Wood isn't so great though. Keef is/was very influential on how guitar was played too.

Anyway if overrated means guitar players I don't like who lots of other people do like then

Page - good composer, mediocre lead player and terrible improviser. Obviously important but leaves me cold usually.
Vai - All technique, no emotion.
Clapton - Great with Cream but he's made boring AOR for years and lived off his legend.
Malmsteen - like Vai only worse
Hammett - very, very average

Georgie
06.21.00, 01:05 PM
Jonathan- I think 90% of the bands today would not exist without Eddie Van Halen! Between double hand tapping, whammy techniques, volume knob techniques, and harmonics, there was nothing left for guitarists to do in the 90's except go backwards . . .which is what they did! Not only that, van Halen are largely responsible for killing Disco and burying Punk when they broke on the scene.

I dare say that Jimmy page has probably inspired more bands and guitarists then Jimi Hendrix did. Keith Richards? We are all entitled to our opinions but I do not believe Keith is going to rank high as a gifted guitar player. Keith is an adequate bluesy guitar player who is more respected for his longevity and song writing then his guitar playing.

tap1966
06.21.00, 01:14 PM
Georgie - Yes I agree about Eddie for sure. Along with Hendrix he is the most influential electric guitar player ever. But how many great guitar players don't acknowledge Hendrix as influential though - not many that I know of.

Keith Richards *is* known/rated as a great writer and rhythm player so in that sense I don't see how he can be overrated. I never hear people claim he's a great lead player, he certainly doesn't.

Bostonian,
I like quite a bit of Aerosmith, some old, some new.... I amust admit I have not heard everything by them. A few of my favorite tunes are:

Toys In The Attic
Seasons Of Wither
Uncle Salty
Same Old Song And Dance
Deuces Are Wild
Amazing

I could probably think of many more if I put my mind to it... http://64.176.3.141/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif It's not that I think that Joe Perry is a trailblazer on guitar like Eddie is, but I do like his style. As far as soloing goes, he reminds me of Page, kind of left field blues, sort of sloppy, but cool...

On Walk This Way, he just blows through the solos like a horn player would. Killer!

im amazed by the hendrix bashing. although i can understand it, because if you dont own Electric Ladyland, or Axis: Bold as Love then you havent heard the music that truly defines hendrix. You have probably heard a the greatest hits cd or songs they play on the radio. There are some amazing songs on those albums ive never heard on the radio and are not on a greatest hits cd. I cant imagine why. I dont think its really fair to make judgment on a musician when youve only heard some of their work (usually the radio, which plays the most commercially successful songs, not the best "guitar" songs)

i do agree kenny wayne sheppard is overrated, (ive listened to his whole cd). I also think kurt cobain has received far too many awards in guitar magazines for just sliding around fifths on his guitar.

Rokgtar
06.25.00, 08:22 PM
For a great example of Hendrix playing his ass off, check out the Band of Gypsies...

He also tears it up on on the song "Red House"... just great psychedelic blues.

I can't believe all of the Hendrix bashing either although I can understand how some people get those impressions of him. Most radio stations only play two or three of his songs and he seems to be remembered for burning his guitar and taking drugs. That's really unfortunate becuase his playing was just beautiful. Like some others on this list suggested, check out Electric Ladyland and the newly re-released Band of Gypsies.

I always thought that Clapton was overrated. I think he's a great guitarist, but I just don't see where he got the God label.
