that's an interesting choice. That's got Dave written all over it. I'd be so pissed if I was an up and coming rock band though. Opening for VH can really help a career.

IMO, THIS would be the way to include Wolfie. Wanna get him on the road that bad Ed? At least with the opening act, he probably wont be scrutinized as harshly as he could be. Leaves the door open for Mikey AND still be able to play w/ his son.

Coming out and doing 3 hours like some bands do would be very cool. However, Van Halen is stuck in the 1980s live show model so that would never happen.

Nah. I thought Collective Soul was their best choice for an opener to date.
At this point, and on this tour, they're not going to pick someone who's going to upstage them.
Does anybody really care who the opening band is?
Whether is some up-and-coming really good band or a juggler (John Mellencamp had one in '92), I'm there to see Van Halen.

They would have been better off to have Ed's buddy Evan Stone come out for 30 minutes, that way all of the women could stare at his hammer, while the guys hit the beer stands.

who goes to a concert for the opening band?In the late 80s, I went with a few friends to see Tesla open for Def Lep. We went mainly to see Telsa, as we thought the album they just released was pretty good.
But we were probably the only ones in the arena who went there for the opener.
Def Leopard was much better though. I think the Tesla guys were nervous.

I guess I AM confused. My frustration is that EVERY FUCKING TIME the band does ANYTHING, there are 5 or 10 threads or comments stating how much it sucks. In most cases (maybe not yours) it's without merit because it's something the person has never experienced or heard before. It's like people wait with their trigger finger on the mouse as soon as anything is announced and reply with a negative comment. I'm not the biggest Reggae fan either but it doesn't warrant . . . , fuck it never mind. Your right, I'm out of line and theres nothing to open ones mind about. I'll move along. Jesus

Dude. You just proved my point. Why don't you ask the others that said the same thing? Don't worry about ruining my weekend. And if I must . . .
How to Exercise an Open Mind
Simply put, doing unique, random, different, and ridiculous things is a good way to exercise the mind and promote new ways of thinking about the world around us. One hour of increased brain activity via thinking a lot or experiencing new stimuli can make you smarter, more energetic, more creative, more sociable, and more open to new experiences and ways of thinking. Here are some of the endless numbers of activities that can stimulate your brain. The key ingredients are to be open to new experiences, and changes in previous ways of thinking about these experiences.
Stimulate your ears differently. Try different music you haven't tried before: Classical, New Age, Zouk, Rap, Mariachi, Country, Afro-Blues. You don't have to like it at first, but if you keep an open mind, you can still find it interesting. Listen to a radio station you typically don't listen to.

Hey, he can bitch me out if he wants, I don't care. I've got ecclectic taste in music, so I can roll with it and still have a good time. I like seeing talent in all forms.
Some people just like what they like and that's it, which is cool as well, I just don't see the point in complaining about something we have no control over, there's so many better reasons to be miserable around here that are way more logical.:smokin:

Hey, he can bitch me out if he wants, I don't care. I've got ecclectic taste in music, so I can roll with it and still have a good time. I like seeing talent in all forms.
Some people just like what they like and that's it, which is cool as well, I just don't see the point in complaining about something we have no control over, there's so many better reasons to be miserable around here that are way more logical.:smokin:
It takes all kinds.....:thumb:
Has NOTHING to do with talent. I don't dig the genre. Fairly straight forward.

Why don't you ask the others that said the same thing?
I don't think I'd have a problem finding a majority in regards to finding a better opener.

That's what I said.....I like seeing talent in ANY genre, and you like what you like.......different philosophies is all, no right or wrong, just different....no biggie.
Nothing against the opening band. But this is two differnt types of music. I saw Fuel, Creed, Collective Soul, Alice In Chains, Metallica, Dokken, Scorpions open up for the Mighty VH. This F***in blows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:brickwall

VH ALWAYS has shitty openers. Who knows, I might even like Kaymani
Marley, but at face value, it's sho nuff another sum bitchin head scratcher.
Maybe Dave gets his weed from this kid or something. Fuck, After the Fire
opened for VH in '84. Don't remember ATF? You lucky bastard.

Marley Undaunted By Van Halen Opening Slot
Ky-Mani Marley
September 14, 2007, 10:15 AM ET
Wes Orshoski, N.Y.
The throngs of rock-loving Van Halen fans who show up early to the band's long-anticipated reunion tour this fall will be greeted with an unlikely opening act in reggae royalty Ky-Mani Marley. But those expecting to hear copycat versions of his father's "One Love" or "Exodus" are in for a surprise, he says.
With a seven-piece band in tow, Marley -- the 31-year-old son of the iconic Bob and one-time table tennis champion Anita Belnavis -- will be performing tracks from his forthcoming "Radio" disc," which he says is not a reggae album.
"It's really edgy, really urban. It's not reggae," he tells Billboard.com. "I don't want to call it hip-hop, and it's not R&B. I like to call it 'Ky-Mani.' I think I've created my own sound now, where you can identify me from everything else. I don't like to stick to one genre. And that's the reason I call it 'Radio,' because the radio is where all genres of music meet."
In fact, it was through America radio, and the music played by his mom, that he was exposed to music of Van Halen as a child. Born in Falmouth, Jamaica, he moved to Miami in the early 1980s, where he grew up listening primarily to rock and pop music.
"In Jamaica, we only had one radio station, so when I came to America, my mom bought me a boom box, and I switched it onto the first channel I heard and left it there, thinking that's all there was,” he says. “It ended up being Y100. So in my early years, I'm listening to 'Love in an Elevator,' Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi. My favorite record growing up was George Michael’s 'One More Try.'"
To be released Sept. 25 by the New York-based Vox Music Group, "Radio" is Marley's fourth disc, and the follow-up to 2001's Grammy-nominated "Many More Roads." It features appearances by Mya, Young Buck and rising Jamaican singer Tessanne Chin.
"It has an edgy feel to it," says Marley, who co-produced with Jason "J-Vibe" Famer, Ky Miller and Red Spyda. "It touches on a little bit of everything. You have the party song, the song that's a little more serious, the love songs for the ladies and the songs that touch the soul."
Marley, who also made strides as an actor in recent years, says he's not worried about the classic-rock audience he'll face on tour with Van Halen. "I'm not nervous because I'm not going there to play reggae,” he says.” I have music for everybody. There's definitely going to be some people surprised, I promise you. Of course, everybody's not going to like it, but everybody can't hate it. So my thing is, if I can capture one fan, then I've done my job."

I would have thought maybe Eds friend Leslie West or BTO. Hell Kenney Wayne Sheppard was good for VH3. They had a crappy band opening in 04 too I went for Beer. Even Kiss had Skid Row minus Bach for their last tour with Ace and Peter......keep it rocking I say. Must be about the money, less
known less money.

Maybe there's a back room record deal associated with this decision ?
Ya know....take this guy out and get him some exposure for us, and we'll help you with your new record in 09'.
Sounds like something Warner Bros. would pull.:smokin:

Yep...Alice was great on the Carnal tour...

good point...we shouldn't judge too harshly until we see the show either...might be a nice change of pace...and a carefully orchestrated move by WB...

Hopefully the fans have mellowed with age. I vividly remember how brutal the Velcros were treated when they opened in 1984. This fella may need to be fleet of foot. I'm curious to hear what he sounds like. Hell, I'd be willing to give the Velcros a 2nd chance. :D

I've listened to some of his stuff, and I like the choice. If it is good muisc does it really matter. Marley comes on and mellows the crowd... Boom! Van Halen comes out... Perfect extremes!

but the velcros were like a poor man's sha na na. I know the show I went to everyone thought Autograph was opening for them. It got ugly halfway through the 2nd song. this being around the 4th of July there were firecrackers and bottlerockets heading their way:devil:

You make a valid point. The basic idea of Led Zeppelin going on without an opening act all those years was frankly because no-one was interested in seeing one. Even today groups like Rush are warming to the idea of presenting "An Evening With..." and finding that folk really do not seem to have any difficulty with the concept.
