I just listened to VH 1...about 10 times in a row. I hadn't done that in awhile. I'm sitting in school today during my planning periods...and jamming to the old school with my CD walkman. Damn man...does it ever get old? I have to tell you...there aren't many things that I can listen to over and over...and certainly not Hagar's stuff. It's funny. When I moved to Raleigh...I took ALL my Halen discs...including Hagar's stuff. I popped Hagar in around the north side of Youngstown...and took it out around the south side of Youngstown. It was Diamond Dave the rest of the way...and of course...when I entered the infamous triangle....Tobacco Road....

Now sometimes, you just have to wonder what Sammy was thinking with his lyrics. Let's see...what to rip on today. I know that there is a whole legion of people who think that Mr. Romper Room rhymes is the better lyricist...but...well...I'm not one of them. So let's see...what brilliant masterpiece should I bring to light tonight. Well...truth be told...my creative juices aren't flowing well. I already took my dump for the day...and the lyrics just aren't working for me.

Now...my defense for this before some unknowing idiot flops through this thread and starts attacking...which would be okay as well...but not what I'm looking for...hehehehe.

Now...I've been listening from certain well-respected (sarcasm) fans who have been saying that Roth's lyrics suck compared to Hagar...which is about the funniest shit that I've ever heard. My point is this...Hagar's vibe is the same, sappy vibe that people like Bette Midler have...with a little more dope. What do I mean. Well...take a love theme...like birds....wings or what not (much like When Eagles Fly and The Wind Beneath My Wings...same vibe). He takes that vibe...adds some catch rhyming words, and makes a song. Now of course, depth is an incidental thing in a Roth lyric. He doesn't aim for it. Lyric writing is too important to take seriously.

And yes, "Simple Rhyme" is among the fruitier CVH tunes you'll find -- though I think that was deliberate, considering the loopy nature of the tune. But the "Jump" and especially the "Push Comes To Shove" quotes wither outside the context of the rest of the lyrics.

Your "Jump" quote, inane by itself, makes more sense couched in the convoluted abandon of the lyrics preceding and following. And as for the "Push Comes to Shove" quote, well, that's too easy a shot, bro. The part you quoted is meant to accent the solo, not convey a narrative. The rest of the song is a model of restraint and implication.

Now, uh, tell me, how are the Sammy bits I pointed out enriched by the full contexts of their songs?

You may have an answer or two, here; after all, I came to the belated realization that perhaps ol' Red meant:

"I'll grab a line..." (pickup line?)
"You grab that pole..." (penile entendre)
"And I'll meet ya down at the ol' fishing hole..." (need I explicate here?)

See now thats the thing Bug all song writers have some goofy shit, but like everything else lyrics are subjective, and almost any lyric takin out of context looks strange.

Both Sammy and Dave have written some good, and sometimes deep lyrics, and both have some questionable lyrics, that is what I am pointing out, although I am smart enough to know that a whole lot of EUAS members are gonaa go ape shit and try to blow me up, and thats fine, I would not post what I did without expecting some shit.

Now to defend a couple of the Sammy parts.

Long legs straight on up to her lunchpail...
the next few lines such as.. sweet little wish bone oh yeah don't wanna break her in half(the legs form a wishbone )
then...lick up the one side down the other(well you know..)

and need a change... before it makes me sick, that's what's on my mind(the song is called feelin, thats what he is feelin in his heart at the time, maybe he is talking about the fact that he thinks it's time to move on and leave VH, who knows but Sammy)

I looked at the lyrics on Brad's site - and you could be right. But unless Brad comes on here and posts that he got those lyrics from the original scribbled notes of DLR, I think mine could be correct, too. Then again, I'm sure the info on Bradman's site is always 100% accurate.

Points taken, BigDog -- and I don't question that there's meaning behind Sammy's verses. It's all too frequently a matter of execution:

"Gotta make a change, make it quick, before it makes me... sick" - smacks a bit of a grope for a rhyme...

vs.

"Smoky mountain's gotta blow, I'm the livin' proof..."

Similar sentiment, communicated far more artfully through a conceit.

Let's try this:

"She's so fine... how 'bout a nine on a ten scale..."

vs.

"She wore a whole lotta not enough and served it up with class, had a sunny disposition and a somewhat shady past..."

Come on, now. Isn't it obvious which verses have more sizzle and pop?

"Lost in a world, so far from home... miles and miles from nowhere..."

or

"Heard the tale a thousand times, and it's one that I believe...take a trip beyond the seven seas... black sand..."

More finesse, more flourishes, and ultimately, more adept narrative. That's the Diamond Way. And oddly enough, Dave's freewheeling, ornate style is in its own way more reminiscent of a certain guitar wizard's solos.

There's also a difference between being hedonistically cheesy and being unintentionally cheesy. But hey, Sammy's more direct approach often serves him well. Nothing else would have worked for him on most of the MTM tunes.

But 'round these On-Fire, Smilin'-optional parts, we all know what works better for Van Halen...

Yes...we all have our preferences...and I dig the debate. But even Sammy fans have to admit that his rhyming on more than one occasion is a bit ridiculous. Like I said before...it reminds me of those fucking poems I used to write anonymously to chicks when I was 15.

That might be a preference kind of thing...but I bet you I could find some elementary school rhymes and fit them into Sam's songs. I've left several verses from Sam's stuff that states my point.

POJO, I can see your point, yes Sammy has had a few lyrics that were less than incredible, all songwriters have had a few of these moments.

That being said, Sammy's stuff overall just hits home to me, can not put a finger on it, but it does.

Dave has also written some stuff that really hits me also, but for the most part not in the same way as Sammy.

I am sure it is just the oppisite for you, and that is cool, thats what makes music so great, one thing means something deep for one person while something hits home for another, and some things just make you scratch your head and go huh....like...In a word to, the wisdom tooth, to tell or not the truth....those are from "Fire in the Hole", and I still have no clue what it means?

I never said it wasn't cool to have different types of music hit home. Hell, I wholeheartedly agree with it. You see, my point on the fact is this. Van Halen became Van Halen with Dave. There is no proof, or never will be ANY proof that they would have become as big with Sam....NONE. They were far more than established when he joined them. They were fucking ICONS when he joined them. I don't feel...I know...that they weren't the same band. Getting to number one means nothing except you were popular. What do I mean by that? Look at the Dave songs that made the band great. I mean...their early stuff was that fucking Rock and Roll that blows your ear drums out...and makes you pray to got you can get them back to hear some more. Being popular had nothing to do with it. Getting air time had nothing to do with it. They were just that Damn good. The Sammy era was all about coat tails and curiosity. Was their music good? Hell...it was okay...it was there...it was...hell...it was...I don't know what the hell it was...but it wasn't what I grew up listening to (VH). And it sure as hell won't be what I die listening too...

No shit storm POJO, and no argument.

Dave helped make VH legends, no doubt about it. Without Dave VH would not have had the chance to hire Sammy, cause there would be no VH.

However, I think the Sammy years were more than just coat-tales. They were still the best rock band in the world, different, but still the best. Number one albums do mean something, so do Grammy awards, they may be overratted, but they still mean something.

I got into VH during the Sammy years, and then went back and found the Dave era stuff. I have always liked the Dave stuff, but LOVED the Sammy stuff, and it is still the same way.

I went through a period when I wanted Sammy back with VH as much as you want Dave back, but at this point I am very happy that Dave looks to be back, and just as happy that Sammy is doing the solo thing again. IMO Sammy is better than ever at this point, and I would have to think as happy as he has ever been.


I think that in 1984 it was the right move for all. I think that in 1996 they should have rehired Dave and sparred us the Gary thing. I also think that 2000 is the right time for Dave and VH to ride the train for as long as they can.

Ahhhh....yes....it feels like home again.

You see Bigdogdo...I'm not really disagreeing with what you are saying. What I am saying is that Van Halen was a group of guys that started playing together in the mid-70's. When you change the format...you change the band. I know you understand that because you have stated as much in most of your posts. That's why a lot of Dave fans call the Hagar years Van Hagar. Now, I'm not necesarily saying that I agree with the Van Hagar thing...but they WERE quite a different band from top to bottom. Instead of change in the context of Van Halen as I knew it (with that I mean the band was changing WITH Dave...they certainly weren't the same band they were in 1978, and I looked forward to the continued change), they got Hagar and moved in a totally different direction. Of course, they HAD to do it...but nonetheless...the situation changed...the brand of music changed...the attitude changed...and the band changed. Yes, VH's musicians remained at the top of their game...but in a different genre of music. It wasn't balls-out rock and roll anymore...it was pop-rock. Yes...they were the BEST pop-rock band...if that's what you're into...but the dynamics changed dramatically.

What I'm saying...and FORD has stated, as well as many others several times is that Van Halen...the Van Halen that many considered one of the true great bands of all time ended in 1985 (until now) regardless of the reasons. That style of music that set them apart was gone. The ATTITUDE was gone. Yes...the Hagar fans say that the attitude was there with Hagar...but it was more of a mature attitude. I say bullshit to that. Bands that stay together for numbers of years mature and change with the same members...you have too. When you change members...you have to stop...and start again. Yes...it's a new band. You go back in time and look at the bands that have changed members and you see it over and over. Bands don't mature...the fucking change with new members. Now...when Van Halen was huge...and by that I mean when people compared them to the great rock and rollers of all time...Dave was there. Since Dave has left...VH has been considered a great band...but I have NEVER, EVER heard them compared to the greats where they belong. Sure...Eddie still is because he is that Damn good...but the bands status has dropped. As far as Number Ones go...it depends on how you look at it. As far as sales go...I'm going to leave that alone. It's been beat around enough...and I'm not going to say a word. The true tune of a record isn't whether it leaps to number one in a week or two. What does it for me is the lifetime sales. You know what I'm saying, longetivity. Now...unless Hagar fans keep going back and rebuying albums...the Hagar albums just aren't going to have that longetivity because there just aren't many songs that people hear on the radio that Hagar sang that make you say...."Fuck I need to hear that again." You might say..."Haven't heard that in awhile..." but you surely can't name me a song that has the impact of "Ain't talkin' Bout Love" or "Unchained" or "Panama." I mean these songs are universal songs that people hear and want to hear more of. Classics if you will. Songs that will be played on Classic stations for eternity, and were and have been played on Rock stations since they were released on albums. Hagar's catchy lyrics did the job for a short period of time...but I laugh at the longetivity...because there just isn't any. Now, I'm not trying to rib you here, but you surely can't tell me that you see many timeless Sammy classics with VH. Songs that can be played after Stairway or Wild Horses or Let it Be without a generation of music listeners groaning.

You know...I can see more Hagar/VH lovers liking the Dave era as well because the good majority of you started listening to Sammy...getting that vibe first. Most of you really don't get coming from the original version...and going to the Hagar version. They be two different entities. One that will stand the test of time...the other that will be carried along with it because of the Van Halen name at the end. Yes, Eddie, Alex and Michael have been the constants, and they to this day remain supreme musicians...they really do. But when original fans are dished something completely different, you can't really expect any of us to accept it. We may listen, and I for one did. We may buy the albums, and I for one did. Hell, we may go to the shows, and I for one did. But I was never...ever (minus being mesmerized by Ed's solo every time...being a guitar player kind of brings that along) blown away with music that touches your soul. Music that doesn't make you think of every other band out there. Yeah...the Hagar version was a better version of the bands around them...but they were never the same.

As far as the Grammy award...I could probably give you a thousand instances of jokes at the Grammy's. Yeah, maybe VH deserved it...but not only does that not mean that it was the best music that year, but certainly not the best music they ever made. It was probably one of those instances that the powers that be was saying, "Hey...you don't throw TV's out windows anymore...here you go."

So yes...we agree to disagree...and Hagar did ride the wave better than probably anybody else could have...but he just doesn't match what was and could have...and might still happen....

But only time will tell...

I KNOW you heard the footsteps...because there's a size 12 right on your forehead.

That's right...DLR is imminent. Let the truth be told. In 1978 an album came out called Van Halen. It spurred on some of the greatest albums, concerts and fans to ever grace the music world. Yes...it's about to happen again.

Has there ever been a better band than the original Van Halen?

Not a fucking chance.

The next weeks and months are going to bring a music Eruption to the rock and roll world. It's time to state the case...
