It's not a serious interview show. From what I've seen of it (granted, not much) it's kind of a caffeine high, Beavis on a sugar rush, clusterfuck. I'm actually surprised Sammy was allowed to finish as many sentences as he did.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sam is asking not to be questioned about VH when promoting the foot. There wasn't even a mention of VH in the interview except to say MA is a former member. Sam would be smart to not be distracted by the brothers and their little hate filled lives.

RedEye, the program is a JOKE.
There was a recent controversy when the hosts kept making fun of Canada and how our troops needed rest and regeneration after they are pulled out of Afghanistan in 2010.
The fact that it is on a SO CALLED...News NETWORK.
Is another JOKE in itself. I didn't even finish watching this interview that gu was so annoying.

I disagree. Ed had to CHANGE A LOT in order to look normal.
Ie: His teeth, his hair, his hair colour, his weight...
Sammy? Has aged NORMALLY. Plus....PLUS...he is 10 years OLDER than Ed.
Ed SHOULD HAVE ALWAYS been better looking than Sam in terms of how he has aged. But that is not the case.

MMmmmmm... Nope.
Van Halen may have gotten dangerously close to the Journey and Foreigner genre with ol' Red on the mic, but fair is fair: Ed looks closer to 60 than Sammy does, and I believe it ain't a set of picket fence caps Hagar flashes every time he grins.

I fucking hate Fox News and everything they stand for, but it was a neat little interview, nice to see them talk about dumb little things and just shoot the shit more or less.
And anybody who thinks Ed looks better than 61 year old Sam is out of their damn mind. Eddie's body is ravaged by years of self-abuse, and he looks like it too. He looks better than he has in years, but Sammy looks great for his age and Ed looks like he should at best.
GREAT point by Greenpaw as well :)

I love Hagar, I can't wait for CF, but Sammy needs to quit talking about sex.
Seems like starting around the Livin' it Up tour - happens on the DVD's and some bootlegs (Tahoe) - this guy can't give an interview, or talk between songs without talking about sex. I'm sure it's quite an accomplishment for someone in their 60's to have sex everyday, but we don't need to hear about it! It's making your lyrics bad and we just don't care!
His wife needs to put a stop to this. No sex until he stops talking about sex. The more he talks about it the more I think he protests too much.
That said, the man rocks and I cannot wait for this album! I give him a pass, no one rocked as good in their 50's ever (1013 and not 4 sale are incredible) and hopefully with CF no one will have ever rocked as hard in their 60's.

pretty par for the course segment as far as these days goes.
Oh for the days of Tom Snyder....
As for Sammy, hey, he plays his role well. He's a walking talking brand name symbolizing fun in the sun sex and rock and roll. It's been said before, he's like a hardrock Jimmy Buffet. A lot of people dig it. I get it. I don't dig it, but I get it. I can't stand him, his voice or his lyrics. I've always said that when he's great he's great but when he's bad, dear god, it's bad. There's just no in between for me. I don't care for his schtick any more than I care for anyone else's but he is good at what he does and I give him that. For those that like what he does, he's awesome. I just don't care for the cheese factor myself. If I never hear I Can't Drive 55 or him talk about sex or say "hey, I'm all about fun and having a good time" I'll live the rest of my days quite content.
I'm looking forward to the record. I'm hoping there's some good stuff on there and that Sammy's voice and lyrics don't keep me from enjoying the record. So far I'm pretty enthusiastic about enjoying the record. We'll see.
And why do people keep talking about "emo?" So far as I can tell, there aren't any "emo" bands dominating radio or the charts right now and haven't been for a couple of years.

I'm all for telling the truth. If Sam were telling the truth he'd be up there spouting all his bullshit venom about VH. He's done it for years and now that he has a band...he sure is staying away from that topic..at least for now.
My reason for saying the interview sucked is because instead of talking about fucking his wife in the morning...he should be talking about the great guys he is playing with in Chickenfoot. He didn't mention them at all...the other guy did. And, he also didn't really promote the album or music other to say it is "classic rock" but it's new...
Cmon, the guy is a egomaniac and was stupid enough to compare CF with Zeppelin. Just for that he deserves to be thrown into hell.
Look, I like the two CF songs that came out and look forward to the album and possible live show if it comes near me...but I just think Sammy is a fool sometimes...i'd love to have his talent for writing music and all his cash...but when it comes to having well thought out things to say in interviews...he's not that good.

you bring up some very fine points...with only 5 minutes to "sell" chickenfoot, one would think he'd have really played up the fact that it's an all-star team of talent, that they were going to bring real rock back to the people, that they were going to teach these youngins what real hard rock is all about ANYTHING other than the stale "i have sex in the morning, I like to have fun, yep I'm the can't-drive-55 guy" crap that we got.

a 5 minute spot on national television has the potential to reach more people than their podcast and their Guitar mag interview combined. More importantly, it has the potential to reach people who aren't wired into the scene...so to speak. Folks that don't read bulletin boards daily, people who don't watch the little viral videos and do twitter or myspace.
It was a great opportunity to introduce the band, the significance of the line up, and what their goals are to an audience that may not have heard about them.
If I had never heard of Chickenfoot before and saw that spot, I would have much lower expectations than I do now, having followed the evolution of this group from rumour to actual band with two tracks released. I would have thought "aw man, Joe Satriani is going to be slumming it with Sam."
It did not do a whole lot to build expectation for this group. It did not do a whole lot to build respect or anticipation for the group. It was just sammy being sammy and in that capacity I think it was a missed opportunity....unless this is how they want the band to be portrayed, in which case, he knocked it out of the park.

I disagree completely. There are always new fans, be they the unitiated or the young, there are always new people to bring into the fold. I suppose almost everyone has a finite amount of fan appeal and their music only goes so far in terms of timelessness or relevance but it would seem that if there is a group of older musicians that can capture lightning in a bottle, it would be these guys. Unless they really are, as someone said earlier, a bunch of classic rock has-beens.
Even if they are "doing it for us" (how heroic and altruistic of them...I wonder if Sammy will let me in free...since he cares so much about me) it would seem that it was still a missed opportunity to connect on some significant level with us, his dearest fans who he cares so much about and who admire him so deeply...he could have tossed us just a nugget, just a nugget damn it, of deeper insight into the group, their plans, how cool it is to rock out with the cock out on stage with Satch....again ANYTHING...except for the whole I'm up for breakfast, my wife is hot, i'm all about fun in the sun."
It was a wasted five minutes. I'm actually LESS excited about the release due to that interview than I was before.
Now again, if they said "hey, sam, we got a call from Fox. We've talked and we feel you are the one that needs to represent us out there. oh no doubt. These guys sounding retarded is nothing new. This is just more of what we've come to expect from the guy and some folks like it and others don't.
I guess I just come from this position: How am I supposed to take you seriously if you don't take yourself seriously or the opportunity to communicate with me seriously.
That doesn't mean being stern and glum and frowning and self-important, but it does mean not making yourself sound like a retard.
For an example see Nuno Bettencourt, even on that retarded show on VH1. He made jokes and laughed but didn't come off as a tool or a cartoon character. Sean Lennon gave a great, albeit brief, interview on Letterman a while back...made jokes, lot of brevity, but he came off intelligient and as someone who can be taken seriously as a musician. Hell, look at Mike Anthony when he does press...he doesn't come off as a retard...he comes off as a cool guy.

not true at all...I've been pretty stoked the whole time...but all my enthusiasm has been based upon the hope that sammy would show up as a mature singer and songwriter..not the trite red rocker. I was hoping that he'd step up the talent around him in this band. Sadly, based upon his lyrics on the two tracks (particularly soap on a rope) and this silly appearance on the TV, my hopes have been greatly dashed. I continue to really look forward to the album release, I will buy it, I will listen to it. I hope Sammy brings his "a game." I'm less hopeful now than I was. I've always said my enjoyment of this project would hinge upon hagar, he is either going to sink this thing or sew all the pieces together.

I think the only screw up has been the lengthy lead time between the release of the 2 tunes and the actual release date of the album. Not that it's making me less excited, but it's a PITA having just two tunes and then having to wait for yet nearly two months for the disc to come out.:yell:

yeah that's not helping either. Down the Drain is such a cool tune and it's so nice to hear Mike's voice on Soap on a Rope...but at some point enthusiastic hunger starts to turn into frustration which turns into apathy. Im still in the enthusiastic phase for now.

The only one not so bright is you for jumping on a CF bandwagon that hasnt even released a full album. I mean look at you...you look like you are leading the charge for their fan club or something with their logo as your avatar and everything you post about them.
Clearly you have a hard on for the band. I think that is great. Discounting others opinions of the band or their PR is wrong and as a fan you should hear all sides and not bash people for disagreeing. I mean why call someone not bright because their opinion is different than yours? That's not bright in my opinion.
I have heard all of the interviews this band has put out so far and the two songs. The weak link to it all is Sammy. I'm a fan of Sammy's. I like his solo stuff before VH and I like his VH stuff. I just think he has nothing to say when he is being interviewed and he is too focused on himself instead of the band.
It was even clear that he was like that in VH. Ever see the 5150 studio video with Sam going on and on until Ted Templeman tells him to shut up and get into the room to go play? The guy doesnt shut up about himself.
For once, Sammy should focus on the other talents in his band instead of his lame bragging about nailing his wife in the morning. Cmon...the guy is almost a grandfather and he talks like he is still 25.
Reckless Fable

not true at all...I've been pretty stoked the whole time...but all my enthusiasm has been based upon the hope that sammy would show up as a mature singer and songwriter..not the trite red rocker.
Of course your hopes have been dashed. Sammy as "a mature singer and songwriter?" When has he ever even attempted to don the top hat and harmonica in order to pursue the path of Dylan, writing songs that end war and enrich the social consciousness?
Naturally, the question is rhetorical. Sammy Hagar has never once made the pretension that he wanted to be taken seriously as a singer and songwriter. He repeatedly states that his goal is to throw a party and be an entertainer--that's all. Maybe it isn't your cup of tea, but to hope otherwise is an exercise in futility. Hoping Sammy drops the Red Rocker act, reinvents himself by "maturing" in his song writing is like hoping that Axel Rose will lighten up.
Sam's lyrics and songwriting aren't my cup of tea, however I do respect the man for being completely comfortable with who he is and 100% conscious of his abilities. Any attempt to deviate now would be phony and, to me, that would be disappointing.
why so serious? it's just fucking music... you like it, you like it, you don't, well you don't...

I agree with your points. It is true...Sammy has stuck to what he does best and to what he doesn't do well. But at least he is the same guy. Good point. :smokin:

maturing as a man and a singer and/or songwriter hardly entails picking up a harmonica, donning a top hat and pursuing the path of Dylan, writing songs that end war and enrich the social consciousness. Again, I point to a guy like Nuno Bettencourt. The guy writes "fun" songs. Look at "King of the Ladies" from the last Extreme record. It's a goofy, tongue in cheek song about the eighties and picking up chicks yet I have no problem taking him seriously as a mature man and musician. Being mature or "serious" doesn't have to mean taking up social causes or writing about esoteric or existential topics, it merely means not acting like a pimple faced hornball or a cockrocker stuck in the past.
I applaud Sammy for being a genuine guy. He's not my cup of tea but I acknowledge him for not being pretensious or a fake. I just happen to believe that one can be a party man, an entertainer and show people a good time without acting like a 60 year old rejected extra from fast times at ridgemont high. At this point in his career and his position in this group of very highly respected musicians, I just expected him to leave the red rocker, up for breakfast schtick behind him...just a little bit. I don't think he needs to "reinvent" himself by any means, just grow up a little...jeez.

Just give Sam a hug and move the line along please. :D

The bottom line is this for all the killjoys on this thread: fuck interviews, the music will do the talking. If you don't know how Sammy is by now, there is no hope for you.

The bottom line for me is this. It's nice to be talking about a band that is making new music and doing lots of press to promote it. That's a BIG change from the band we all know and love!
