I'm for zero covers.
I'm sure there are crates of music the band has written we will never hear. I wouldn't want one of those orginals bumped even if it wasn't the best song.
I'd like to see Dave wear blackface makeup ala Al Jolson and they could play "Back in Black" by AC/DC.
------------------
Eat Us And Smile!!!!!!
Not many groups can play covers and make them sound like it's their own. Van Halen can.
I would love to hear them do "Summertime Blues" in the studio. Or even "Join Together" by The Who.
Nice call Raldo! I love their version of Summertime Blues from Club Days Goldenwest Ballroom II and from Stand by your side--very cool "Iron Man" jam for the outtro, too. They covered so many toons with Dave it's hard to think of new ones sometimes, but "Join Together" would be cool and apopro(sp?)if they are indeed re-convening(please God please). Dave said they knew over 200 cover tunes in the club days.

Okay the house isn't particularly found of covers, but they're okay. I say if they do just have to do one, cover either SRV, Jimi Hendrix, or Rhodes era Ozzy! Crazy Train or Voodoo Chile http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/eek.gif!

While I don't think they need to do any more covers, I just thought of a good one:
"Honky Tonk Woman" by the Stones. Think about it! That cool guitar intro, then Dave comes in, "I met her.....". Mikey could throw in some high harmonies during the chorus.... If you know the song, just imagine VH doing it!
Mama let 'em play, by Jerry Doucette. It's a great guitar song that Ed and gang could just turn into a monster. I've never had a problem with VH covers, because they took on such a fresh flavour after the boys worked them over. If I could vote for one though, Mama would be it.
Fat Bottom Girls by Queen. Mikey doing them backup vocals.

Cover songs are cover songs no matter how well you do them. If they put a new album out full of cover songs, I would be a very unhappy camper.
Since Dave did California Girls, how about another Beach Boys classic?
Think about this, b/c it could be very cool:
Surfin' USA.
Don't Laugh!!
Let Ed do those opening bends, and then replace the organ solo in the middle w/ a solid minute of wailin'.
I'd buy it. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smile.gif

I'd also vote for For Your Love by the Yardbirds or Glad All Over by the Dave Clark Five. I know that Ed is a big fan of the Dave Clark Five, so... http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smile.gif

the al jolson ideas is out of question for me. im an black man and al jolson is not even cool. i was wondering how dave could put that black face shit in the alae cd booklet? i wont go any further on that subject. as for covers, i was at the grocery store today and heard "honky cat" by elton john. i thought wow dave could do that song.just an thought!

i was eating breakfast in our dining hall the other day (before this post started), and i heard this song on, and as soon as i heard it, it struck me as a song that van halen could redo, with roth's 'ice cream man' style to it... 'little red riding hood' but sam the sham... make it a really rockin' tune... i think it would be cool... however, i want new van halen music... just do that one and make the rest new... what do yaw think?

I don't know, but during the lunchtime special on WPLR, Pam played Mungo Jerry's In the Summertime, an old favorite of mine, and it has Dave written all over it. I could see Van Halen kicking ass with one of Ed's ripping improvs right in the middle of that one during a summer tour.
I have got spring fever so bad right now!
------------------
Could this be magic?
I thought I read somewhere that Van Halen covered,"Spoonful" in the club days. I really dig the Who's version from Live at the Isle of Wight. Cream's version is the ultimate, too.

Fat Bottom girls would be cool, but if they were gonna cover Queen they shoulda done it with Gary. He's got a little flavor like Freddie did you know? Kinda flashy and spazzy and cool all at the same time. Hell if they doin' Queen, Hammer To Fall gets a high vote from me.

I've heard that they've done Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" in concert, several years back. The original song was cool. I'd love to hear a Van Halenized version of it.
[This message has been edited by dropdeadlegs (edited March 29, 2000 at 12:20 PM).]
I wonder how Van Halen would do Mad Season's,"I don't know anything,"(kinda sums up what I know about VH today). I can imagine Ed takin' those two guitar parts and just layin' down some heavy grooves.
Van Halen did incredible versions of "Superstition" in the club days--I have versions from 1975 and 1976. The version from '76 is epic--includes some Dave/Ed bluesy battlin',lots of jammin',and even an Alex solo.
If Van Halen records an album with Dave,I hope they do at least one cover. If they don't, I hope they at least do some live covers or surprizes.
Bono issued a challege to the rock n roll world recently. U2 are working on a studio album(supposedly gettin' back to their roots)and he dared anyone to make a better rock n roll record. I think they are doing a Spanish version of "Anarchy in the UK."
I hope Van Halen does something creative and ballsy and bluesy and devil may care...

Supposing the rumors are false, I'd like to see Dave and Sammy get together to form Sam & Dave, a cover band of the original soul group of the same name. "Hold On I'm Comin'" and "Soul Man" would be audience favorites. And they could do "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair" (referring to Eddie). Otherwise, "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock Ya (Tonight)" by Spinal Tap would be a good tune to do.
------------------
Don't believe everything you read....I read that somewhere...
If VH is going to do any covers, it has to be from widely respected artists, but not from main stream artists like the Stones, or Queen. I believe it would take away from VH's legendary status. That said, here are the best choices for covers with Dave in the band.
1. Sweet Home Chicago- Robert Johnson
2. Moondance- Van Morrison
3. Spooky- Classics IV
4. Spill the Wine- Eric Burdon & War

Redfire, I just got this computer and I'm being a total wimp about downloading Napster. I had a WINAMP player downloaded, but I couldn't figure out how to save Mp3's. Every one I played erased the one I had before it so I ended up de-installing it. I'm totally computer inept, and I'm chickenshit to download Napster because I'm sure I'll never figure it out. What I really would like is to be able to burn music from mp3's onto CD's, cause this new computer has a burner in it.
Bottom line is I need someone to come in here and do this for me, cause I'm not net savvy enough to figure it out.http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif

Glenn, there is a thing at Yahoo that you can download that allows you to take the mp3s and make them into wave files and then you can burn them on to a cd ... or something like that. I know you can take mp3 and put them on a cd though. You might consult Yahoo on how to do it.

Redfire, I apologize for the stupid questions, but here goes. On Napster, are songs that you get in your collection permanantly, or not? Can you burn any mp3's in your collection onto CD's? Sorry, I'm just trying to figure this out without the benefit of any computer knowledge.http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif

Glenn, at Yahoo, they can tell you what to download that makes it available to burn mp3s onto a cd.
At Napster, once you download something it stays in your personal library, which you can access when both on and offline. If you want to play songs you've downloaded at Naster through your WinAmp. All you have to do is on the playlist off your WinAmp, choose select file, then go to your Program files located in your C: drive, selsct the Napster file, selest music, and then select the song or songs you want. You can save it by choosing the save playlist option on the right of your WinAmp playlist, then name your list and when you want to listen to it, sesct it and it brings up those songs on your list automatically.

Another thing about the Stairway to Heaven mp3 I have is that it's performed in like a concert hall or somethin. There is claping at the end of it but clapping like you just got done hearing a piano recital. It's funny cause at the end Dave is all like "Thank you, thank you very much."

How about White Room or Sunshine Of Your Love by Cream? Ed is a fan of Clapton so it would be mildly appropriate. Or how about Stranglehold by Nugent? Nugent used 5150 amps on the Don't Tread tour with Damn Yankees and Gonzo is a fan of Eddie, so it would be like a little appreciation in reverse for Nuge!
