Wow! That shows some definate promise!! It sounds great, the guys are playing great and Sammy's singing is as good as ever. If you close your eyes you can almost imagine this as a Van Halen album!
I'm excited, I can't wait for this thing to hit the stores! :)
Cool stuff!
I definitely like the "Down the Drain" song better than "Soap on a Rope," but they are both solid efforts, and I really like Satch's playing on these.
The mix is excellent by the way.
It is very Van Halen-ish. Not that there is anything wrong with that at all.

Damn! The opening riff of "Soap on a Rope" is huge!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Satch is laying on some massive riffage - I've never heard him play a riff this "thick." Chad Smith is also a monster on this tune and I heard some cool Mike bass licks as well.
The ending solo by Satch, fuckkkkkkk!!! WOW!!!
NOW I get it, when Sam was talking Led Zep comparisons...

I was thinking the same exact thing. Not that I've disliked any of his stuff, this just sounds more...dare I say...brown?
Well this is Satch playing in a true band situation which he's never done. His tone is the best I've ever heard from him, really mean and yes VERY brown.
Like I said, it's got a ton of VH qualities to it.
That opening riff to Soap On Rope is like a sledgehammer. It's cool.

Best part of "Soap On A Rope" is Michael's background vocals. Gonna miss Mike's harmonies on the first VH cd without him. The tune "Down The Drain" could've used Mike's vocals in some spots too.
Satriani sounds great as usual in both tunes and certainly the highlight. Although, I can do without Hagar's raspy screeching vocals even the studio can't help with.

I hope this whole album is nails and kicks King Edward in this ass and inspires him to release a CD where he and Dave both bring their respective "A" games!
"Down the Drain" sounds EXACTLY like "Runnin' with the Devil!"
I kid, I kid.
Very nice sound. I like both tunes a lot. Satch is killer on the outro to "Soap." I agree, it's great to be excited about music again. This is good.

Wow. Very impressed. For whatever reason I thought this was gonna be lame since I've never dug Satriani's stuff but he sounds a lot like Ed here. Sammy sounds ridiculously good for his age. There is no rock singer his age with this good of a voice. The guy is doing something right.

man...mike and sam sound f'n awsome together on this stuff (soap on a rope)....wow...satch can play his ass off.
I watched the evh interview he did a few months ago and I was shocked at how bad his voice sounds....if VH releases anything they'll be missing mike's vocals so bad.
I'm REALLY liking this stuff.
I hope this whole album is nails and kicks King Edward in this ass and inspires him to release a CD where he and Dave both bring their respective "A" games!
You got that right, maybe this is the start of a few things to look forward too!
Chickenfoot vs. VH. Finally, the fans win!
VH can probably mask Mike's loss with Lukather or someone else in the studio as they have used him before. But yeah VH's recorded music without Mike in the backing vocals will be lacking, it just will. You forget with Dave how so many of those choruses were carried by Mike's harmonies.

I think VH's biggest problem is that Dave hasn't written a half decent vocal melody since 1996 and the 2 bonus VH song. I donno who's gonna write the vocal melodies for the "hypothetical" new VH albums.
Also I do think the bad "karma" or "vibe" these guys have cultivated for the last 10 years would show in the mood of the music. Before when you listened to VH you were listening to 4 cool guys making music (at least it was perceived this way), I don't think it'll be the case next time around.
Back to The Foot. I hope Sam also sings in a lower register on some of the songs. I'd say this is the best thing since "Balance" from the VH dysfunctional "family" - but Balance had many clunkers. It could surpass it, let's wait and see for the rest of the songs. :D

Comparisons to VH are pretty ridiculous because you have to mention WHICH VH you're talking about. If it's "Heat About It Later" or "Mean Street" then of course it's not at that level.
But VHIII, the Best of Tunes? It's BETTER than that VH. And better than any performance i've heard form the 07/08 shows.

People forget that Satch has played in a band situation before, albeit briefly. In 1993 he replaced Richie Blackmore in Deep Purple for a spell during the "Battle Rages On" tour, although he never recorded with them.
Steve Morse came on board for their next album, Purpendicular in 1996.

I agree.
That's exactly what I said with regards to the vocals. The magic of a studio can "compress" anyone's vocals, I've been to school for recording engineering and there are many tricks of the trade. This is no way the Sam of old who never forced or screeched on a VH studio cd cause he never had to. It's how you sing live and I'll leave it at that. Hey, time catches up to all of us especially vocalists.
The guitar sounds great, drums, Mike's harmonies are always special.

Sounds good and l look forward to hearing the entire CD. I love Satch, I love EVH and I don't think they sound the same at all. Joe is too smart to try to copy Ed, though technically he could. The tone sounds like Joe's "The Extremist" to me, which was also produced by Andy Johns. Joe's also using pedals for his distortion here, rather than an overdriven tube amp like Ed. Comparisons to Van Halen will be made - Sam will make sure of that -but I vote to judge it for what it is - great music by a group of great musicians. The same will be said if and when Van Halen ever comes out with a new CD with Roth on vocals. That will be special.

Wow, I'm happy with these. Soap is my fav. The live show should be very fun. Sam still has it regardless of what the haters think.
Sam's voice sounds like he always has, I have no idea what people who don't like it are complaining about. If you didn't like it before, you won't now, but his voice sounds great and the same as it always has. How many 60+ guys out there can still belt it out like Sam can? Answer? None.

Always bro! lol I make no apologies for diggin' Ed's music...never will. After all, it's the music that matters.
Everything sung well, everything played well, everything mixed well. It's "good music". But to me it just doesn't have the cool melodies Eddie Van Halen always comes up with, which is what put Van Halen above the rest and up there with the legends. This missing creative piece is very evident to me. Like I said, it's good music though! I'm very excited to hear the rest of the album, perhaps there will be a few songs with those catchy I can't stop listening to it melodies.

It is and sounds like a whole new band. So far I give it a 10 !!!! period. The effort, the sound......it is all there. They will tear it up live !!!:thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

It is very Van Halen-ish. Not that there is anything wrong with that at all.
that's almost an understatement...
its sounds great...I was a bit surprised at the actual sound being very VH esque...with Joe on guitar.
but then again..1/2 of the former lineup IS VH
It's all Hagar.

Well, while i'm the first to say it isnt in VH's league, i'll make a point here to say that it shouldnt be compared to VH. It's Chickenfoot, and obviously with Sammy and Mike on board there will be a flavor that reminds of VH circa-Sammy. With Satch blazin' on guitar it also gives that ol' feel of supersonic playing alongside Sammy and Mike. But, the 2 tunes previewed sound like what it is....a project with the respective members.

Sorry to say but VH doesn't have a league anymore. They are out of the league. They haven't played a game at home in 10 years now. They hve re-located to Phoenix and they are playing Golf every day. Who knows? Maybe they will come out of retirement. I hope they do.
I don't mind comparing the two. I honestly don't think anything VH will do in the future will match what I will hear on this upcoming CD from the Foot.
There I said. I hope I'm wrong. But I know 50% of it is right because at the VERY LEAST this Chickenfoot album will KICK ASS!!!

Sam's voice sounds like he always has, I have no idea what people who don't like it are complaining about. If you didn't like it before, you won't now, but his voice sounds great and the same as it always has. How many 60+ guys out there can still belt it out like Sam can? Answer? None.

Silly sports lingo notwithstanding, i certainly disagree. To take all that from 2 tunes is quite a stretch....not the kick ass part as much as the assurance that new music from Ed & Co. wouldnt measure up. Time will tell.

I eat my words....I predicted it would suck and I was wrong. Very wrong!
It sounds good and since I am a big fan of Satch...I think he sounds fantastic. His tone is thick, juicy and really on fire. The other guys sound good too. It does have VH qualities and I expected it would with 50% of the one time group.
I will buy the album. I will probably really like it,,,if the rest sounds like this. I prefer the Soap song better.
We can only hope Eddie is listening to this shit right now and he's saying to Dave...OK, THE WAR IS ON! I think this is going to be the one thing that forces Ed to stand up and answer with new music. This is the time...there will be no other time to really make a statement as a new VH group as to stand up and come out with something that beats this. If VH doesnt come back with an answer to this...then I'll be pissed and sad that they went away with a whimper...
You hear this Ed? Wolfgang? Get busy on the new tunes that we all want to hear...

Just finished listening to both of them.
Love it. Nice to actually be able to hear the bass in a rock song for once.
Joe's sound is huge, and I think you can really hear Andy Johns is the guy turning the dials.
Good stuff. Love that Joe is using simple hooks for most of the songs and letting his solos and outros do the heavy lifting.
Can't wait for the album and this tour is on the summer to do list!

Great to hear Sammy and Mike again. :)
The 2 songs.....ehhh they're ok I guess.
First impression:
Soap on a rope- I dunno, nothing special. Cool groove but it kinda goes nowhere. It sounds like a solo Hagar tune with a great guitarist.
Down the Drain- See soap on a rope
They all sound amazing, especially Satriani and Hagar, but I'm just not all that excited about these 2 tracks right now. These seem like really good filler tunes. Hopefully there's some faster songs on the record, that's what I was kinda hoping for. Something that'll let Satriani loose to unleash the shredding :headbang:
I'll need to give these a few more listens on a real system once I have the cd and not these little computer speakers. I'm sure they'll grow on me.
I'm still excited about the new album, no doubt. These are a nice taste for now, hopefully the main course will blow us away

I like them, and it makes sense. The main reason I like VH is because of the brown sound; it's only natural that I like a band with a similar sound. I have to say that the crunchy guitar is my favorite part of what I'm hearing; of course it is nice to hear Mike again. Does Satch sound like Ed? It's similar, but it's not Ed. Should it be? No. And I'm glad. I don't want to spend my time listening to the Foot and comparing them to VH. I just want to enjoy good music from talented musicians.
I'm not a huge fan of the lyrics, but then I didn't have real high hopes in that department. And they're not awful by any means; they're just not anything special. I think I'll buy the CD when it hits the stores, though. It'll be nice highway driving tunes. :)
I tell you what, of all these old-school musician that have been putting out tunes lately, Chickenfoot takes the cake. Def Leppard's new album got a thumbs down from me. AC/DC was nothing new. We all know about Chinese Democracy. I'm not into U2 at all. Unless Aerosmith comes up with some killer tunes, the Chickenfoot album will be number one for the summer.

I was just thinking that it wouldn't be a good mix of musicians...chad seemed a bit of a s strange choice and I just felt Satriani could do better than sammy who hasnt had a good song since VH...so I was skeptical.

C'mon man, you can't get too overly excited about these two tracks and say VH with Dave won't "match" what might be heard on an upcomming CF cd? The two songs are ok but not great. I certainly wouldn't pay money to see this band. This is not Sammy at this peak and you can get even Bob Dylan to sing good in a studio, if you want to call it that. Give him credit for the effort but no comparison to what Sammy was like say, first 3 VH cd's he did. That was the best Hagar. Mike sounds like he did with Van Halen and Joe sounds great.
As for what Van Halen plans to do. Sure Ed says the new Van Halen will continue on after he takes care of a few priorities outside of music. I think after all these years he's entitled to that. I have no complaints because I was there worshiping this band every step of the way in the early days. Them days, when it was natural for VH to release an album every year or two. That's what it was like for most bands during that era when they're hungry to make it. So when Van Halen was making a name for themselves and before different genre of music starting ruining rock and roll, we came to expect greatness from VH and we got it.
Times change and I'm sure making music is a major priority for Edward Van Halen but so are other things in life. That's the reality of it these days and it'll never be the band of old but it'll be something special I'm sure.
But if you want to compare what artistic ability Eddie Van Halen has against the writing team of Hagar and anyone else involved, I'll take Edward at the top of his game.
I expect that to happen since Dave will be involved. I'm all for it as I'm sure many are.

Oh, and for the haters....this new music from the non-VH half of the full half, not counting the quarter taking Dave into consideration, plus Wolfie, minus Cherone.....?!?!?!?!.......if THIS doesn't get the brothers motivated, then all hope is truly lost for new VH brothers music.

Joe is the man. I'm telling you all, if you think he sounds hot and his tone sounds good in the studio just wait till you hear him live. This band is going to put on a hot show. You diehard VanHagar era fans are going to cream yourselves when they play a few of those classics. I may enjoy them too!
Love the guitar in these tunes. Love hearing Mike in there and I agree that Sam's voice sounds strong. A tad raspier than I last recall it but that's not a bad thing. Sounds great!!! Joe never intended to be a insturmental solo guy it just worked out that way for him. Very cool to finally hear him in a real band. I've wondered what that would be like since I first heard him in the 80's. It's hot. GOOD FOR THEM. Happy as hell for Mike and all of them. Looking forward to what gems and adventures these guys take us on with the rest of the tunes and the show!! Really looking forward to hearing what else Joe laid down on the CD!:bounce:

It's kind of funny that the protectors of CVH are so quick to tell us how average these songs are. All that's happened is that Sam, Mike, and the others got their shit together and have actually put out new music, something Ed hasn't done successfully since Humans Being. And if you want to take it a step further he hasn't done an album full of noteworthy music since Balance......like 16 years ago?
Who really cares what Ed could do or has done "at his peak"? When we actually have new VH music to compare to Chickenfoot then it'll make for a good debate. But for now it's pretty irrelevant and makes for a weak argument.

Very nice! I really dig these tunes. I'm SO happy about this band and really looking forward to getting this CD and having it apart of my summer soundtrack. :) Always nice to have a new CD that hits on so many of your sweet spots. *makes a face like a dog who's scratched behind his ear* lol
PeaceThat right there pretty much sums up my thoughts....especially the live tone Joe has...there is nothing like the tone he gets live. Fucking incredible every time I see him play.:thumb:

The band sounds GREAT on these tunes. I've never been a huge fan of Satch, and was curious as to how he'd fit in a band setting like this. He sounds fantastic. Sammy sounds good, but there is a little something not quite jivin' with me about the vocals. I'm sure I'll get over it. Either way, I'm pumped for some new music!

Good songs but I remember everybody getting excited when they heard It's About Time, Up For Breakfast and Learning to See.
Its not better than Led Zeppelin nor is it better than anything on 5150 outside for Inside or maybe Get Up. Not trying to be a downer but this does not compare to the first time I have listened to VH albums outside of VH3. Don't get me wrong, it sounds good but give me Van Halen or Van Hagar any day of the week.
I will buy it though when it comes out.

Those of you that haven't seen Chad before are in for a treat. He's gonna have that Pearl Ref one up/two down a rockin'.
I hope they borrow from the Peppers and start the concert off with a jam from Chad, Mike and Joe. Not too long mind you, but just long enough to light the fuse.

The haters are the usual suspects. It could've been solid gold Zeppelin caliber and they already had their response typed up months ago. :)
These individual postings are coming in high and fats...err, fast, so I stumbled in trying to find your question about actually downloading the tunes themselves. Look, I attempted several times (using my usual semi-legal maneuvers) to log the songs in order to capture 'em (if you will), to no avail.
Rather painfully, I wound up getting a multi-cycled repeat of the "Chickenfoot...Chuckenfoot...Chickenfoot, ect" refrain in my eardrums. I am certain that someone will have a surefire method of grabbing these tracks, and will thusly present them on Youtube within the next eighteen hours. For me, fuck it. http://www.easyfreesmileys.com/smileys/free-ashamed-smileys-721.gif (http://www.easyfreesmileys.com/Free-Sexy-Adult-Smileys/)
The thing is, ultimately the sound quality will be utterly and undeniably dismal. There are already cell-phone recordings floating about the web regarding the "secret gig" recently played. Let me remind you (as well as everyone else) of the ghastly sounding recordings of the 2007 "Ersatz VH" rehearsals, and the subsequent ill-recorded first few shows from that period.
The album will indeed be available soon. I can dig the desperation for new music, yet come on....hearing it well represented and in technicolor beats the living shit out of hearing it first via two cans and a string, or at least it does to me.
And to be high-handed (and somewhat old-fashioned) for a moment, I realize that this record merely fills in a date on a calendar full of myriad musical choices for some. For those that find music or artists as interchangeable as choices on the TV clicker, please allow those that think otherwise with anticipation towards this release the time to enjoy it. Perhaps you'll dismiss or enjoy it, yet some out there will relish it for years to come.
Be fair. That ain't too much to ask, is it?

It's kind of funny that the protectors of CVH are so quick to tell us how average these songs are. All that's happened is that Sam, Mike, and the others got their shit together and have actually put out new music, something Ed hasn't done successfully since Humans Being. And if you want to take it a step further he hasn't done an album full of noteworthy music since Balance......like 16 years ago?
Who really cares what Ed could do or has done "at his peak"? When we actually have new VH music to compare to Chickenfoot then it'll make for a good debate. But for now it's pretty irrelevant and makes for a weak argument.

Patience, and I have plenty of it considering what Van Halen provided me as a kid and for a lifetime.
ALL I meant was...how can one say that these two tracks are not in VH's LEAGUE?
VH hasn't made an album since 1998. What league are we talking about?
1984? 5150? VHI?
You can't compare MANY albums to those. But they are 30 years old.
Until VH comes up with something fresh and NEW. They got nothing on these 2 new tracks.

Bravo :thumb: Until VH releases something substantial, there's nothing the CVH defenders can really say. Sam's aged just like Ed and Dave, and if Ed and Dave were to release a new album (IF), chances are it wouldn't stand up to old school Van Halen either. Only difference is, Van Halen would be trying to be Van Halen, while Chickenfoot is trying to be, well...Chickenfoot.
It's a ridiculous comparison.
You know why this sounds like Van Halen? Andy Johns, Sammy Hagar, Mike Anthony, and Satch's beyond powerful tone. These four have great chemistry together, and it shows in these two songs, which to me are absolutely excellent. Great atmosphere, in-your-face production, everything's mixed evenly, decent lyrics considering the outfit. If this is a sign as to how the album's going to be, you bet your ass the rest of this thing is gonna be good.
Soap On A Rope has a nice hook to it, catchy chorus, and damnit if Mike's voice isn't a perfect compliment to Sam's. Down The Drain is also a great track, though so far SOAR has stuck with me more.
Now let's get some tour dates out there and a date to drop this baby :bounce:

You are thinking too much or reading too much into people's excitement. No one thought Chicken foot would overshadow Led Zeppelin. Even if Chicken Foot lasts 15 years with massively popular albums they will not overshadow the VH we all know and love or erase Led Zeppelin from "the histories".lol
Just because people are loving what they hear and excited doesn't mean anything has changed regarding their admiration of VH's music.. What HAS changed is there is a smoking project about to be revealed. People who are fans here like many of the dudes(and their talents) in the band and this style of music. In the very least it's a killer new addition to our music collection and a exciting journey we are about to experience.
Also unrelated to your post but I am VERY happy for Mike! I have a feeling he is going to feel the fans love on this tour and be moved by it. They all will but this is sweet, especially for Mike. I'm sure the last few years had to in some way break his heart even though it built up over time. Let's forget about VH for a moment and whats better and one upping each other..this looks like it's turning out to be a great collaboration and it's wonderful that Mike has the opportunity to rock at this level again. This is coming from the biggest CVH fan you'll meet who loved the last VH tour.
Thank You Chicken Foot for giving us something to sink our teeth into! Finger lickin' good! lol :)

No one should feel threatened or hate on this cause of their loyalties or favorites. You either like it or you don't. It either does something for you or it doesn't. Should be simple.
I'm not directly responding to the point you are making and the people you're trying to talk around but the point with this band imo is the music. As we learned in the 80's mad skills on guitar doesn't = great riffs, great songs, or great music. Satch writes great riffs, tunes, and music. Teaming him up with veterans of this level is turning out to be something special.
I personally haven't heard anything from Vic Johnson that ever made me feel like picking my guitar up. I can't say the same about the ending of SOAR though. On first listen I got hard.

VH doesnt have to prove anything actually. They could never do anything for the rest of their lives and have done more for music than most rock artists ever do. These 2 tunes are cool...but to even think of them in the same vein as VH is silly. I hope Ed & the guys do record more songs and tour...but if not that's the way it goes. I think Ed would not be human if this doesn't give him at least .0001% extra inspiration with any new VH recordings. I doubt it's much extra inspiration though. He's already kinda been through this in a more intense way with Dave and Vai. I doubt at this stage of the game after all he has accomplished and been through that he has a burning desire to outdo anyone. I think if anything, if he puts new music out just wants it to be good and well received.
If Ed was that competitive and effected musically by outside influence he likely would have got all Grungy during grunge and bent more to trends over the years. You have to admit and admire..Ed has always just been Ed and done what he does. His playing has changed but not with trends, fashion or whatever. So people need to stop talking about that aspect of Chicken Foot and just enjoy the project for what it is.

Good points bro. I'm thinking that with Eddie apparantly feeling good these days & just being happy that the inspiration he'll get will stem from that more than trying to outdo CF. IMO his son inspires him more than anything CF could ever do. And that's why i think there will be more VH music in the future finally. I know that Ed isn't going to cut a new record simply because of THIS record. He may be insecure, but he ain't THAT insecure. All you are saying is that he will somehow feel threatened by this project enough to produce product as if it's some kind of contest.

I know he can smoke this music and guitar playing...he invented it. He just needs something to inspire the creative juices...and if this can add even 1% to the list...i'm all for it and I hope it happens.

Like i said, i think that if Eddie does some new tunes it'll be more because of his frame of mind/health/happiness, and alot to do with his son. I dont think he'll even pay much attention to CF.
If Ed cuts any new tunes, it'll have nothing to do with this project, yes.

If Eddie gets competitive i think it'll be with himself before it would be with anyone else. That's just 2 cents, but who knows?

I got the same feeling I had when I first heard Balance, or the tracks from 1996.
The 2004 tracks were ok, but I didn't get the same buzz from those that I do from these new Chickenfoot songs.

Now who knows the thoughts and wiles of Eddie? ;)
Funny how that works ain't it.
However, one of us is taking the more plausible route, and one of us is taking the longshot route.
:)
Moreover, Eddie never cut any music to compete with other bands.

I say both are plausible. But hey, none of us really know anything truly. I say be optimistic....while we're at it, let's enjoy this new outing with CF. I'm not saying it's a replacement for new VH...nor should it be. But like back when Dave did the solo thing, i always felt that we got 2 great bands out of the deal. This should be no different.

I am digging it. I like these songs better than the Sammy VH songs like "Right here" and similiar commercial fluff. But I always prefered Sammy's solo stuff over his work with Van Halen. I will probably buy this based on these 2 songs.

No one should feel threatened or hate on this cause of their loyalties or favorites. You either like it or you don't. It either does something for you or it doesn't. Should be simple.

It is cool to hear Sammy singing with a kickass player riding shotgun again. Sorry, but the years with Vic were horrid to my ears, lol. Satch is def in my top 10, well...if i had to make a top 10, lol.

And therein lies the problem. And it explains a lot. You find it very hard to accept anybody else other than Ed unless they are UNARGUABLY a better or equal skilled player.
Please explain what you felt was wrong with Vic's playing?

Wow, Im hooked! Im diggin both songs about equally right now but I want to listen to the whole album now! The groove on down the drain is so tight! Satch and Mike compliment each other so well and sam sounds awesome!

Vic was mediocre at best when doing the tunes he actually played on. Nothing special, just by the numbers stuff. When covering VH live, not that i would've expected him to do it at the same level, NOR would i have wanted a cloned copy, he just really played weak. His tones were forgetable on record, worse live. I like some of Sammy's solo tunes with Vic on them....but not because of Vic....not at all. There were legions of players that Sammy could've hired for the Wabos that would've done a better job...and not because of technique alone. Vic didnt need to be Paul Gilbert, but if he couldnt even play a respectful cover of Vh then he shouldnt have been there doing it.

Another thing, being happy that Sammy is fronting a band of killer musicians again isnt a bad thing. The Wabos as a whole were solid players...but this is another level. I expect to be very much impressed when i go see CF live. As a unit, not just due to Satch. Mike's no Billy Sheehan, he's Mike Anthony....and we all know he and Sammy sound great together. Plus, he lays a solid foundation for the guitarist to shine over....and Satch can do so. Sounds as if the drumming is also very much high caliber. Other than fronting VH, this is the most excited i've been to see a Hagar fronted band in a while.

I don't think it's anything your saying man. I just think they see your sig and are trying to scratch your eyes out with chicken feet. lol
Hey all, this is a VH forum..Satch's playing is in the realm of a EVH and Sam and Mike were in VH so it's not a stretch for people to compare I suppose. This after all is a VH site, not CF so just because some of us are all fired up doesn't mean everyone else is. Some people may be lukewarm to it and wish this was more about new VH music than anything else. So it's time for everyone to go to Kumbaya camp again lol :P and chill.:drunk:

LOL...so true! Hey, i use my sig with pride! I'm looking forward to seeing CF live...and i'm feeling good about the prospects of new VH in the future. I say we all have fun and enjoy what may come.
I hear exactly what Sammy was saying about this project. It is balls to the wall, kind of jammy in a good way. I understand his zepplin comment completely. Man, I"m psyched!

I really liked both songs.....I cant remember Satch sounding this good since Surfing......the opening of Soap on a Rope had a cool little Montrose thing goin on, then Joe just tears it up......good stuff......really good stuff.
I have to admit......when the chorus kicks in, with MA's backing vocals......I got chills.....

It is very Van Halen-ish. Not that there is anything wrong with that at all.
Except it's played by Joe Satriani!!! PLUS CHAD SMITH!!! CELLO?!??

wow...24 hours and we're already at 18 pages!
The songs are GREAT!!
It is definitely reminiscent of VH but how could it not be.
Even through crappy laptop speakers playing on myspace, the songs SOUND awesome and hearing mikey's vocals again is pretty damn cool.
looking forward to hearing more. Looks like my one question has been answered, at least on these two songs: Sam brought his a game!
I hoped I would like this and I do. Satch sounds just fantastic especially, but the thing I like most about it is the sense of unity in the sound. They play together really well, tight but loose, and the two songs have a really live feel, just like a rock track should.
My only criticism would be the lyrics but, hey, this is rock music, not rocket science, and that perhaps the songs are a little longer than the compositions merit. I think "down the drain" is the better composition of the two, good strong melody, but I love the main riff in "soap on a rope" and the interplay as the song develops. Satch knows exactly when a riff has run it's course and when it needs to be mixed up a bit - surely a benefit from all those years of instrumental work.
I haven't listened to a lot of rock in the last fifteen years, my tastes have changed etc, but this could well be only the second rock cd I have bought since the mid nineties.
I'm really quite happy that this isn't a complete bag of shit. Sammy and Mike have, without question, moved onto pastures greener. If this does well, which I hope it does, I think Chickenfoot could be more than a one album project. Shame they are not all a bit younger with more years ahead of them.
Edit: Forgot to add, without going down that comparison road too much, this has a lot more "groove" than anything VH has ever done. Not saying that is better or worse, but you could seriously dance to this stuff and that is very rare in rock music. One can only think that Chad has a lot to do with that, but also the fact that these guys play so well TOGETHER.

I second that - how to burn these puppies?
And yes I am buying the album, so it isn't stealing, just taking a test drive.
'Soap on a Rope' has everything you would like from these 4.
Sammy and Mike's vocals mesh so well.
Satch has some great riffs and little diddy's in the tune.
Chad with his rock/funk beats.
I think if someone heard this on the radio, they would think it would be new Van Halen or Sammy solo.
I tell ya, I really dig this song.
'Down the Drain'
Very cool intro!
Nice groove to it.
These guys have certainly brought the Rock back into the Roll.

LOL, it's totally different. It's not 1986. It's 2009. The situations aren't comparable. Sam and Mike aren't doing this project because they 'left' Van Halen.
And no, both are not equally plausible. One circumstance has ACTUALLY occurred. The other has not, and is at this time only rumored to possibly be in the works at best. Again....Dave and the Van Halen family cutting a new album is a long shot. Chickenfoot is a reality. Until VH 4 puts something out in hand, its product plausibility is suspect. For obvious reasons.
To wit: this summer, I'll be seeing CF live in concert, whose members happen to include former components of the entity once known as Van Halen. This summer, VH 4 fans will be seeing jack shit from VH 4. Optimism is fine and dandy, but has nothing whatsoever to do with CF.
It's only a one-sided coin as of now. If VH 4 puts out some tunes, then fans like you can compare all you like. Until then, perhaps you should consider enjoying this for what it is, as opposed to something that will provoke motivation from Eddie Van Halen.

You said alot, but didnt really say anything. As i said before, i doubt CF will incite Eddie any more than base curiousity. I do happen to like the 2 tunes, not as much as some around here, but i like them nonetheless. And being optimistic about new things from VH's future in a VH Forum is quite appropriate.

Get your soap up? get your buzz on? A little disappointed in these two songs. I cant see myself listening to these songs 30 years later like I do Led Zep's.................:p
These songs are fantastic.
As Brett had mentioned - there is a distinct VH sound - as there should be. 50% of the band is from VH. And hey - if Van Halen isn't going to release anything...
Back to the Foot.
I think Down the Drain is my favorite....a bit darker then soap on a rope. Plus - I can hear Mikes bass a bit more.
I wish these things were in iTunes....I can't wait to hear the 'real' (non-streamed) version of these songs....
I have three words to express my excitement on this "Bring it the fuck on" :)

Meh....It doesn't make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up like a killer new Van Halen song would. I like it but it's not spectacular.
