View Full Version : My take on Roth radio thus far...

I have listened to Daves show last friday, this monday, and this tuesday and have come up with the following conclusions:

1. Dave is MADE for radio...his voice, his personality, and demeanor are perfect for the radio air waves. His show is pretty damn good aside from Dave getting a lame joke on his brain and repeating it Over and Over and Over again.(point and case from yesterday..."Hey baby, im the rabbi, the rabbi. Hey baby im the rabbi...)

2. Dave needs to stop mentioning Eddie Van Halen. We all know you dont like him(or dont get along with him). Just leave em alone!

3. The powers that be need to realize what they have with this show and do anything to keep it going.

4. Dave is alot more intelligent that i EVER gave him credit for.

All in all, i love Dave Radio. Nice job DLR!!!
Feel free to chime in.

I'm not reading very much good about Roth from the national press. Most of them saying he's got a few weeks to fix the show or it might be it for the Diamond one.

I couldn't disagree more. I've listened to many of the first shows the first two weeks and I think Dave is terrible. I never thought I'd be bored listening to David Lee Roth, but I am. His support cast is awful-that Robin needs to go, I can't listen to her, and having your body guard Animal as a regular on the show is a terrible idea. How many times is Dave gonna answer his cellphone on the air and tell the person I'll call you back I'm on the air? The other day he had Hutch re-start the show 3 times because Hutch kept missing some stupid guitar part to the intro. It was horrible, and Brian Young sounds like shit when they have him on.

I really hope Dave can turn it around. He's got the smarts and normally I think he's very entertaining, but this show in its current format is abominable. Just my opinion. If you guys are loving the show, that's great, but I won't be listening for much longer.

I would agree.

Dave is an intelligent person. No one's debating that and who cares. That has nothing to do with being a good radio talk show host.

However, his show is extremely boring, I'm sorry I've listened enough. I've downloaded and listened to maybe good chunks of 8 or 9 shows, and it's just boring stuff. I don't see why saying that is a big deal or why people have a coniption fit. If you like it, great. I just think if it was anyone other than Dave, you guys would have quit listening a long time ago.

And his crew has go to the be the biggest bunch of boring ass-licking hacks I've ever heard. You got to be kidding with those tools.

The show has gotten better each week but it is still terrible. He needs a better supporting cast and a structure to his shows. He also needs to talk about subjects he has some idea about. Last thursday he was talking about Aliens with some wierdo, I have no idea where he wanted to go with the interview or what he wanted to accomplish but that is Dave for you.
As much as I dislike Hagar and get a kick out of Dave roasting him it is old already. I am sick of all of the EVH & Hagar comments. Leave them guys alone already and move onto something else. Do you really think this helps you get back into the band.
As a huge Dave supporter I am getting ready to jump ship.

You said it brother. It'd be fuckin phenomenal if Dave got back with Van Halen. The Ball is not in his cour though. I'm not saying it won't ever happen, but it doesn't look good. Fuck, it don't look good with Sammy either.

We got the most Badass Rock singer, on the air, instead of being in VAN HALEN. The fucked thing is, from what I've seen, and what has always been known before, Dave is still an ego'd out dick. Flat out. Hey fuck it, he always was a dick. But Six Steamrollin' albums is as good a reason as any to get back with Dave if the "BAND" and Sammy can't jive - go figure right?

I feel fuck it, EVH AND AVH don't want to make music/tour anymore, why the fuck not let the fans KNOW at the very least. I'm not saying they owe as any more new music or tours, but for fuck's sake, lay it on the line man. Don't leave us here with our dicks flappin in the wind year after year.

On Dave's show, yeah, he's a prick, and at that, it seems like he's bein a bit of kissass with his 'for shit' entourage. Roth would serve the world better as a member of the BAND VAN HALEN, not "featuring Roth." Me Wise Magic and Can't Get this Stuff No More - proves he can hack. On the contrary, him disliking both of those songs proves: He's an egomaniac/ a dick/ he needs to wise the fuck up ----> Who's Wise Magic?

i've downloaded the podcasts too and listen at the gym...every segment is the same....he brings up a topic, he talks about the topic for a few minutes, he mentions the phone number to call the studio about every 30 seconds (right after he mentions the topic they're discussing once again), he takes ONE call, he veers off topic in order to throw in one of his anecdotes, goes back to topic, blah blah blah....so boring.

Maybe Dave's show is best taken like the first six VH albums - 35 minutes at a time. My drive to work is about 30 minutes, and I've enjoyed the show during that drive time. I've never listened to more than that at a time.

He sounds fine to me - loved the bit 'bout The Stones cd yesterday!!

Dave's a highly intelligent, witty guy who's probably packed more into his life than all of us here put together. Give the guy a chance for gods sake!!!

It least we're now gettin something VH wise on a daily basis (I know its not much!)

As far as it bein a breakfast show we have nothin like this in the UK - if its a talk show at this time then its either straight news or sport.

That was hilarious. I thought it was cool when they played,"Back Of My Hand," the real bluesy track from A Bigger Bang, and Roth said that when he stayed up all night with the Stones after they played Orlando in '81, they jammed on tunes like that(and somethin' about eight-ball and strippers). Anyone ever heard of a bootleg of that jam session? Diamond Dave and The Rollin' Stones playin' de blues...Jamming With Edward Part 2...

Animal cracks me up and Robin doesn't agree with everything King Papa Diamond Dave says. I feel sorry for Hutch. You don't feed/fix that feedback...hit it, B. Young...

I think this is way too harsh, Brett...or maybe we just get horribly shitty radio here in Raleigh, but, IMO, if you're looking for a morning show with some intelligence and flair (at least here), Roth (streaming) is a great alternative...

Honestly, I am slightly miffed(sp?) at your response...I have not followed your Sam/Dave love over the years, but somone chiming in for the first time would certainly categorize you as a Sam fan, exclusively. You get my point? I know you're not, for sure, but I sense a fair animosity towards DLR (which I have definitely had over the last several years!), but (through the radio show) have come to realize/hope that Dave isn't the POS we all thought he may've been over the years...you cannot deny that the show is entertaining! But you see, it IS dave doing it. If Ed had his own show and all he did was babble about nothing I bet you and everyone else here would listen to every word of it. Most talk shows I hear, except for Stern and Opie & Anthony (who got kicked off the airwaves and went to XM-dont know if you west coasters know about them), most talk shows are boring. Every show I hear on 92.3 krock (all talk station dave is on) is more or less boring and not interesting, especially in comparison to the shows I mentioned. Most every show is not original. Either they copy stern or they are just like evvery other show. At least Dave stands out as a host with who he is or was. I do agree he needs some better sidekicks however. I just think that regardless, us Van Halen fans should be happy that in some form an incarnation of VH is in the public eye once again....um which means an album is coming soon.

I'd listen to Ed babble, as long as he was creating some sort of music while he did it. I wouldn't care too much about the content. DLR is the cure for those who really want that afternoon headache. Nothing like listening to someone with dementia to get your blood all sluggish and thick..

DM, I don't give a flying fuckity flack what someone "categorizes" me as. And if I did like Sam more, is there something wrong with that? What in order to be a Van Halen fan, you have to be in love with Dave's radio show and his fading voice? Come on man.

I think Dave's show is a borefest. If I thought it was good, I'd say so. It's boring. If I thought his vocals were good still, I'd say it. I don't get the big deal why everyone worries so much about what I think. Nobody's ever bothered to ask or care about my thoughts on Sammy, he's obviously a far less polarizing guy than Dave on here I suppose.

If you guys want one of those fucking lame webmasters who never contribute to a web site, have boring, neutral, nothing opinions so that they make sure they're everyone's friend on the board, that's never going to me. I think what I think, and I say it, I'm not going to be apologize for not sitting on the fence. It's just not my personality.

In radioland, it's the
sour grapes of Roth

L O W D O W N by Lloyd Grove

David Lee Roth's antics are said to be an outrage to some at station 92.3 Free FM.
Looks like rock-star-turned-shock-jock David Lee Roth is having an ugly launch as Howard Stern's successor, with radio station staffers grumbling about Roth's allegedly bad behavior.
My sources at 92.3 Free FM - formerly K-Rock - tell me that the former Van Halen front man and his manager, Matt Sencio, "are totally out of control and out of their league when it comes to producing a radio show," as one disgruntled employee put it.

"This guy [Roth] is impossible to work with. A real arrogant, self-righteous a-," says a Lowdown spy. "All the execs know they made the two biggest errors in radio history - letting Stern go to Sirius and hiring this moron Roth. He never preps for a show. He is out the door five minutes after the show, unless he is 'forced' to record a commercial or re-record ones he made errors on."

According to the anti-Roth faction, he demanded that general manager Tom Chiusano do expensive renovations on Stern's old studio, then refused to use it, claiming asbestos infestation. He ripped down the walls of a temporary studio because of suspected dust behind the walls.

"He swears he is allergic to dust and smoke, but smells like an ashtray," says the spy.

The source also says Roth's manager got into a shouting match with program director Mark Chernoff on one of the first few days of the show. Then, the spy says, "Roth insisted on decorating the halls and studios, and then he had a moving company come in and remove dozens of pictures and his fake palm trees while he mumbled about Tom and the bastards at Infinity," he said.

In addition, said the source, Roth "hates Tom and is vocal about that to almost everyone he talks at. It's almost like he wants to get fired, and take the money and run."

My detailed messages to various and sundry went unreturned yesterday, and a station spokeswoman declined to comment.

---

My comment ? Sounds believable. Roth doesn't conceal his dislike of Infinity on the show either. It could be that he's setting up an escape plan, in case working "for real" over week after week doesn't suit him :D

When interviewed by Stern's news team last week, Tom Chiasano declined comment on any questions regarding Dave at Howard's birthday party. ;)

I'd be more surprised if that article WASN'T true. Dave's always gonna be Dave......for better or worse.

Unfortunately for him, that hasn't been a good thing since the early 80's :(
