Shit guys. I'm freakin out. Tonight, my roommate received a call from the government about his eligibility to be sent overseas. They told him to pack up some stuff, and they'd call him back to let him know for sure in a couple hours. Then they called back and asked him for his SS# and some other questions. Fuck I'm kinda scared that I'll be called too, but if I am, I'm prepared to serve the country.

Yikes! Is he a reservist? Or was this outta the blue?

Out of the blue. Thing is...21 yr olds, are 2nd priority with 20 year olds being first. I know there isn't a draft, but shit. What the hell is going on!?!?!?

That SERIOUSLY sounds like a scam - someone trying to steal identities with SSNs! smilies/eek.gif

The government doesn't have authorization to call non-reservists, I don't believe. There is no draft; there's no reason for them to call.

This definitely doesn't sound like the real deal at ALL.

It does sound a bit shonky doesnt it - the only other possibillity I can think of is some kind of statistical data gathering, so they have some current figures on hand. Even so, the requirement for a SSN is a bit odd.

Wierd.

Yep, looks like some guy's trying to steal a bunch of identities.

Time to call the FBI or the police it looks like, Tim smilies/eek.gif

Thanks for the advice...I'm going to let my roommate know right away. The thing is, they even left a message, and he called them back. When he asked where he'd go, they said Virginia.

No kidding! If they don't know the SSN, and all they had was his name and #, they could have been ANYONE. Let us know how this pans out, Tim.

Yea, what bastards. Just another case of some slime trying to take advantage of a situation. The government, or military would NEVER ask information like that over the phone.
We had some telemarketers asking for donations over the phone and it was quickly explained over the radio that donations are not being taken that way.
On the positive side, I've seen quite a few Canadian vehicles flying American flags here in Toronto, and have seen US flags popping up in malls, etc.
As the reality sinks in more and more, the feeling of solidarity is growing stronger.

(in british accent) solidarity brother

Yeah he should have told the dude on the phone to fuck off. It's nuts how people can use a terrible situation to profit from it, bastards!

Yeah Tim, call the FBI ASAP! You cannot be cold-drafted. We have rights under the Selective Service laws, and someone asking for a soc # over the phone is gonna turn up as a major league crime in this situation.

If you're on campus, contact the authorities there, as well as local police.

Well, Jenny's friend Tracy...her Dad is a retired FBI agent. We're gonna get ahold of him tomorrow and talk to him and escalate this shit. Gotta do it tomorrow...too late now. But I guess we can call the Chicago police to make them aware of it.

Another thing worth adding...

Even if it WAS the military...they should already have all his information..including SSN. So why ask?

Interesting...

This would most likely fit better in the WTC/Pentagon Forum, so I'll moving it there.

Man, I typically love sick twisted jokes, but that one was way out of line. Whether it was a scam or joke or whatever, somebody deserves some hell.

The military doesn't work that way, although I can understand how somebody could be fooled. Too much going on lately, you know?

First they'll call up active reservists, like Gully. That includes the National Guard. After that, they move onto inactive reservists, like me. If they need more still, they'd institute a draft. That'd make national news if they did that, and you can bet there'd be a lot of body bags coming home prior to it.

The military is oriented towards a volunteer model, and getting ready to accept large numbers of draftees would take considerable time. There's gotta be all sorts of training facilities and personel in place first.

From the perspective of being in the inactive reserve, the most frightening thing to me is being lumped in with a bunch of other guys that don't fit into their uniforms anymore and can't hardly remember how to work their equipment. It's a scary thought. smilies/smile.gif
