Go Cubs Go, GO Cubs GO, Hey Chicago whataya say? The CUbs are gonna win today.

We got rid of the clubhouse poison, we added some unselfish players, and now we are poised, baby.

I ain't wild about the Burnitz signing, but he won't do much worse than Sammy would have done this year, but he'll be a better teammate.

Prediction: Kerry Wood will win the Cy Young this year and will pitch his first No HItter.

The shitty thing is, if they didn't, they have no way to prove that Canseco is full of shit. It's just their word against his.

I don't know what he's trying to prove really. Maybe just trying to save face by putting it out there that he wasn't the only one doing the juice. It's his personality though, and at this point looking back at the players named, i wouldn't put it past any of them to have used at some point.

Once again braves will win the division but choke in the playoffs. Got great pitching this year which they were missing last year. Their there hitting should be fair. Also Cubs will be neat to see without Sosa. I hope to see them do well without him.

I don't understand how Gammons means "The Tigers bid against themselves"?:

(from www.espn.com)

Motown Revival
Sure, the Tigers bid against themselves in order to sign Magglio Ordonez. They had no choice, it's the only way Detroit can compete for now, says Peter Gammons. Story (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/gammons/story?id=1987105)

As far as predictions, I won't make 'em, especially when my teams are concerned. Just hope for good seasons from the Marlins, Red Sox and yes, the Devil Rays.

Meanwhile, I hope Detroit continues what they started last year - like to see the whole Central over there up for grabs - one of those, "Today it's Tuesday, the White Sox must be in first, but Kansas City will be on top by Thursday..." deals. Baseball in the midwest - can't be beat! Same deal in the National League - I know it's a pipe dream, but some competitiveness from the Reds, Pirates and Brewers would be nice. Hot summer nights in St. Louis as the Cardinals play their last season in Busch Stadium. Another six team show over there again, only this time lasting longer into the season (remember there was a point last year when all six teams were at .500 or better?) Just want to see some good baseball all across America - tight pennant races, surprise teams, new stars...

Drove past four towns today that will be busy in the next couple of months - Jupiter, Port St. Lucie, Vero Beach, Viera... I'm ready!

OLO

I agree with Billy about making predictions. The main reason being, the MLB season is very long and a lot can happen. The year the Mariners won 116 games I thought they would be lucky to break .500.

I will make these comments in stead of predictions.
Yankees - Still good, even better with RJ. The AL East will be a slugfest.
Red Sox - The Champs untill someone knocks them off. I dont think losing Pedro will hurt them.
Tampa Bay - Getting better, Lou is a GREAT Manager!!
Twins - Good as always.
Anaheim - Should be very good.
Seattle - Lots of question marks
Oakland - even more question marks but with Beane as your GM dont count them out.

PABS, you and the White Sox can blow it out your ass. (Kidding of couse)

You guys find a third baseman yet? Who will play first after Konerko hits his usual July slump? Will Frank be healthy all year?

I do like Rowand...but you got holes, man.

My prediction on the Sox/Cubs series...Cubs sweep at home, and take 2 of 3 at the Cell.

I cannot even think about making a prediction until I see how Wade Miller's health is. He could end up being a major steal if he is healthy. Even if he isn't, it wasn't an expensive risk. Plus the Red Sox have a couple of blue chips to trade for a Ben Sheets or some ther excellent pitcher.

The AL east should be a slugfest and whomever finishes second will be the wildcard anyways. The Yankees rotation and team ingeneral is old, but they have alot of experience. If they stay healthy they should win the AL east. But its a very long season.

I am looking forward to opening day. Schilling VS. Johnson in the Bronx on a Sunday Night.

Y'all are a couple of pussies. :D

Of course the season is long and anything can happen, that's what makes it difficult to predict. It's all in good fun.

And I agree that the Mariners have a lot of question marks. We were really, really bad last year. :p We could easily improve by 10-15 games, which is a lot, and still finish last in our division. I put us second, though, just to create some positive vibes.

While I'd love to see the Yanks knocked off the AL East throne, I'll take wins in the playoffs. The Yankees will be a monster regular season team, and RJ makes them better in the playoffs. But I'm still not sold on Pavano, Wright and Brown at 3-5. They'll win in the regular season, but...

Just like I'm not sold on Miller or Clement, so I'm equal opportunity here. I do think the Yankees have the better top two guys, but I also think they have bigger question marks 3-5 than the Red Sox.

The ONLY move Theo didn't make that I wish had worked is Radke. I would have loved to see him in that 2 hole, and skip Clement.

I think it's going to be a fun season, can't wait.

Wray
02.09.05, 09:17 AM
Brown isn't a question mark. He's a number 1-2 quality starter when healthy, and he's healthy.

We have three guys with number 1 starter "stuff," and Pavano has number 1 potential if he can hold up under the pressure of NY (which I think he can, given his playoff numbers).

Wray, your key words were IF. That means question mark.

Kevin Brown - old, and was lit up like a fucking X-Mas tree by the Red Sox.

Wright - is he another Atlanta Braves wonder that sucks when he leaves? Long line of them out there. And, he's leaving the pitching friendly NL.

Pavano - has put only one good season on the table, and is changing leagues without having the dominant stuff that lets guys like RJ and Schilling win wherever they go.

I can do the same with two of the Red Sox:

Miller - Changing leagues, and coming off an injury.

Clement - coming off a mediocre season with I believe an injury, changing leagues, and not known for his guts, which pitching in Boston certainly requires.

All of these guys have plusses too.

Pavano had a very good year, has always been a high potential guy with some injury issues, and has proven himself in the playoffs.

Wright has pitched in the AL, successfully, so maybe he's found himself.

Brown has a lot of pedigree, maybe he'll find some brains.

Miller was a legit 1/2 starter for Houston, better numbers than Pavano, could be the steal of the offseason if healthy.

Clement has great stuff, and won when healthy.

My point was that you just don't know what you're going to get from those 5 guys. Barring injury, which is always the wild card when talking about any pitcher, you know what you're going to get from RJ, Mussina, Schilling, Wells, and Wakefield. Not saying my three compare to or are as good as your two, just saying they are known quantities. And, to add to it, the Red Sox have a known quantity in Bronson Arroyo if one of the above doesn't pan out. He had a very hard luck year, and still won 10 games.

The Red Sox probably need a number 2 starter, unless Miller comes all the way back and makes the adjustment. I'm not denying that. I'm just saying that I like where they are with only 2 real "key" question marks.

Wray
02.09.05, 01:35 PM
Wray, your key words were IF. That means question mark.

I didn't say 'if', I said 'when'. Brown is healthy going into ST. I already made that point.

Every single player in baseball is a "question mark" by your definition, because injuries are a part of the game, and any player could be subjected to one.

Kevin Brown - old, and was lit up like a fucking X-Mas tree by the Red Sox.

He was injured. That's pretty much common knowledge. If it wasn't for El Duque's "tired arm," Brown wouldn't even have been pitching in that series. His back, doubled with his hand, simply weren't healed.

Yes, when he's healthy he's very very good. The reason I think he's somewhat of a question mark is because he stands a good chance of being unhealthy for a good chunk of the season. But like I said, time will tell.

God that sounds good. :)

I think Pedro leaving left a bigger hole than the brass could have imagined. With him we would have been favs to repeat IMO. Without him we are left wondering if Boomer has another 15 win season left in him. Hopefully we'll hit gold in Miller or Clement, but i'm not holding my breath. Next year go after Santana and Sheets.

Actually, Clement is an awsome pitcher. The Cubs just never gave him the support he needed. They'd only muster a couple of runs in most of his games. You guys are getting a solid #3 there.

The Tigers can have Farnsworthless...the bastard was a fuckin headcase. Always changing his "look" thinking that was the problem. Last year was some yuppie/burnout/surfer dude thing.

Ramon Martinez was the worse thing the Cubs ever had for a utility/role player. Even when he'd get consistent starts he couldn't produces at the plate.

And I don't see how people can rate the Cards above the Cubs. We only lost Clement, Farnsworthless, Alou and Sosa as key players. The Cards lost at 4 key players and 4 key back-ups. The Cubs pitching is still the strongest in the Central, if not the NL.

Hollandsworth, if healthy is very capable of a 20+ HR season, Burnitz is easy for 30HR, even Patterson is a bonafide 20 HR power. And DuBois will make an awesome back up, the guy can flat out hit.

We have a solid infield with Lee, Walker, Nomar and Aramis. Barrett proved last year that he is a bonafide power hitting catcher, that can also get key basehits too. I see a bigger year for him this year.

I would love a Cubs Yanks WS. But I would also love to see a Cubs/BoSox WS. The BoSox are going to be coming out with a major chip on their shoulder. I think they're going to try and prove that last year wasn't just a fluke Wild Card team thing.

I had to do a short paper for an Economics class, and I did it on baseball. The figures are staggering. 17 of the 20 WS teams since 1995 have been in the top 10 in payroll. Two won it - Marlins and Angels, and I don't know who the third was. 7 of the 8 playoff teams last year were in the top 12 payrolls, including 4 of the top 6.

Basically, 20 of the 30 teams simply have no chance every year, unless they catch lightning in a bottle. :wtf:

Santana signs 4-year deal (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1991342)

MINNEAPOLIS -- AL Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana and the Minnesota Twins agreed Monday to a four-year contract.

Santana had been scheduled for a salary arbitration hearing Tuesday. A 25-year-old left-hander who led the league with a 2.61 ERA and 265 strikeouts last season, he became the first Venezuelan to win the Cy Young and the first unanimous winner in the AL since Pedro Martinez in 2000.

He set a Twins record by winning 13 consecutive games and didn't lose in 15 starts after the All-Star break, going 13-0 with a 1.21 ERA to help Minnesota win its third straight AL Central division title.

Santana, who would have been eligible for free agency after the 2006 season, had asked for a raise from $1.6 million in 2004 to $6.8 million for this season and had been offered $5 million by the Twins.

25 year old left coming off a Cy Young season, and he's only asking for $6.8 million?!?!?!?!

I wonder what he signed for. He coulda broke the bank as a free agent.

Minnesota must be one hell of an organization. They've got a nice history of players wanting to be there, and taking less money to do it. Radke, now Santana. If I recall, wasn't Rick Aguilera (spell?) a die-hard Twin back in the day too?

I don't wish Pedro ill. He's a fake fuck, but I hope he dominates the NL. I still have a bit of the blue and orange blood running through me!

Story is that Charles Comiskey called his team the White Stockings in 1901 as a possible jab at the Orphans (who later became the Cubs). The Chicago Sun (before its merger with the Times) wrote a headline in 1903 that read White Sox blah blah and they shortened it to Sox because Stockings wouldn't fit. Comiskey saw that and decided that Sox sounded better. 4 years later, the Boston Pilgrims decided that they wanted to be unoriginal, so they picked up the "Sox" as well, but in the red variety.

Yeah, but they took it from the old Boston Red Stockings (1876-1882) who we now know as the Atlanta Braves!

Ahh, P&C’s report!!!!!

The Twins lock up Santana, Silva and Radke for multi-years deals; Mauer and Morneau will be around for a full season. Damn, opening day can’t come soon enough. This IS the year.

And the Brewers WILL win 82 games!!!!! They’re finally getting it right with player development and the new (well, the return of the), 9 for 10 ticket pack is a long time comin’.

For the 4th year in a row my prediction….

Pretty much; you can add Puckett, Hrbek, Molitor, and Hunter to that list.

Then, they usually trade guys they know they can't sign, like Knoblauch, Milton and Todd Walker. (Hmm, they may have even cut Walker. The Twins have zero patience for bad defense.)

Yeah, the bullpen is still shaky at best, but the rotation can win in that park and with that offense. Besides SF always makes good mid-season moves to tighten up the team.

Man, it's gonna be fun watching the Dodgers lose 90 plus games this year. I'd be so pissed if I was fan of them after the off-season they had.

Scoopsville . . .

Hey! Hey! Here we go again. The infamous Bartman foul ball is back . . . in pieces, that is.

*To wit: In an effort to generate positive energy for the losing Cubs and ensure a winning season, a plan is afoot. Grant DePorter, a managing partner of Harry Caray's eatery -- who turned the famous foul ball into the stuff of legend -- has a plan to harness its power one more time.

*Translation: DePorter plans to drown the remains of the ball, which was not fully destroyed last year, in Budweiser beer and then combine it with other ingredients to produce a special spaghetti sauce. "The sauce, the suggestion of two Cubs fans, will be poured over pasta and served from February 21-24," DePorter told Sneed. That's the date of the seventh annual worldwide toast to legendary Cubs announcer Harry Caray, who claimed he drank 73,000 cans of beer in his lifetime.

*Gulp! But the entree's gonna cost ya. Proceeds will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in honor of diabetic Cubs legend Ron Santo. The ball-infused sauce will be available at the Harry Caray eateries located downtown and in Rosemont. Eating and digesting this special dish will be a way of expelling the curse once and for all, DePorter added.

Associated Press
TAMPA, Fla. -- Randy Johnson was sitting at his locker after Friday's workout, talking to reporters, when The Boss walked into the clubhouse and met the Big Unit for the first time since adding him to his pinstriped collection of All-Stars.

"Hi, big man,'' George Steinbrenner said.

"How, you doing, Mr. Steinbrenner?'' Johnson responded.

"Glad you're here. Glad you're cleaned up, and glad you're here,'' Steinbrenner said.

Johnson was puzzled.

"I haven't cleaned up. I haven't even taken a shower yet,'' he said.

"I know,'' Steinbrenner, "but I mean ...''

Then, the Big Unit realized The Boss meant that Johnson had trimmed most of his facial hair to conform to Steinbrenner's rules.

A few minutes earlier, manager Joe Torre pretty much said Johnson will start the season opener against Boston on April 3 at Yankee Stadium, a game that possibly will match the Big Unit against former Arizona teammate Curt Schilling.

"It's not a bad guess,'' Torre said. "And the reason that I'm not officially saying that is because when we do tell you that, I really want to be in a position to tell the guy who is pitching two, three, four and five at the same time.''

Mike Mussina started last year's season opener, an 8-3 loss to Tampa Bay in Tokyo.

Johnson is 5-2 in 12 Opening Day starts, and hasn't been passed over for one since 1997, when he was coming off back surgery and Seattle's Jeff Fassero beat the Yankees' David Cone 4-2 at the Kingdome.

Mussina, 3-3 in seven openers, lost to Tampa 8-3 in the first game last season. Two of the other three members of this year's rotation have pitched openers, with Kevin Brown going 3-3 in seven games and Jaret Wright getting a no-decision for Cleveland in 1999.

"Mike Mussina's an been Opening Day starter before. I would assume that he would be until I was told otherwise because of his stature here,'' Johnson said. "It's obviously a great honor. It doesn't mean it's going to happen, yet.''

Johnson had spoken with Steinbrenner by telephone after Arizona traded him to New York last month and received what he called a "nice letter'' from The Boss. But the Big Unit had not spoken with him in person since November 2001, at Bank One Ballpark, after Johnson came out of the bullpen on no day's rest to beat the Yankees in Game 7 of the World Series.

"He said, 'Nice job,' " Johnson remembered.

Steinbrenner has not made many public comments this offseason. Asked about Johnson on Friday, he responded: "He's just a gamer.''

In his three days at Yankees camp, Johnson has devoted much of his time to interviews. In the past, he's been know to shy away from reporters.

He's just starting to learn about what it's like to be part of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry.

"I wasn't part of and have never been a part of the whatever you guys want to call it, the Hatfield-McCoys,'' Johnson said. "As far as the stuff that goes back and forth amongst the players ... you won't see me getting too caught up in that. I make light of it, if you will.''

Johnson said his job with the Yankees was to "teach and learn.'' Then, he combined "logo'' and "slogan'' into a word of his own.

"I'm kind of like the NYPD slogo,'' he said, "serve and protect.''

Urbina's Mother Rescued

At least one abductor killed in rescue mission

Associated Press
CARACAS, Venezuela -- Venezuelan police stormed a mountain camp and rescued the mother of Detroit Tigers pitcher Ugueth Urbina from kidnappers who demanded $6 million in ransom, ending an ordeal that lasted more than five months.

The raid Friday left at least one of the abductors dead, but 54-year-old Maura Villarreal was unharmed, police said.

Urbina was reunited with his mother late Friday at a police station in Caracas, where he hurriedly slipped past reporters to go inside, saying only: "I'm happy. Excuse me, but now I just want to see her."

Officers from a special anti-kidnapping unit rescued Villarreal hours earlier from a remote mountainous area in the southern state of Bolivar, said Joel Rengifo, the chief officer in the division.

"It was a clean and well-planned operation," said Rengifo, who added that Villarreal was unharmed.

The major leaguer's mother, who had been missing since she was kidnapped from her home Sept. 1, told reporters the experience was "unexpected -- I never thought they would kidnap me."

"You can't say they treated me either well or poorly. The most hurtful thing was having to bear them saying that my son didn't love me because he didn't pay," Villarreal said.

Rengifo said the kidnappers had demanded $6 million in ransom, but that the family didn't pay. He said the rescue operation began early Friday and lasted eight hours in an area near the Guaniamo River, some 340 miles southwest of Caracas.

Thirty officers carried out the raid, Rengifo said. "We had to take a boat to arrive on the river by surprise."

He said Villarreal was being held at an abandoned tourist camp called "Las Nieves," or the snows. The kidnappers, after seeing the police, were mostly able to flee in heavy exchanges of gunfire, Rengifo said. One of the abductors was killed.

Weapons and explosives were found at the site.

Villarreal was kidnapped from the town of Ocumare del Tuy in the southeastern outskirts of Caracas, where her home stands out as the most expensive on the block, fringed with trees and adjacent to the family's construction supply business. Police say witnesses told them the men who came for Urbina's mother more than five months ago were wearing police uniforms.

The abduction of Villarreal highlighted an apparent rise in kidnappings in the South American country, the homeland of dozens of major league players who at times have become targets for criminals.

About three quarters of the world's kidnappings occur in Latin America, according to experts, with the bulk in Colombia, Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. The insurance industry estimates there are more than 7,500 kidnappings a year in Latin America, but analysts say those statistics understate the problem because few kidnappings are reported.

Venezuelan police say the number of reported kidnappings in the country rose from 51 in 1995 to 201 in 2002, the last year for which official figures have been released.

Many cases are never reported because victims' families quietly pay the kidnappers.

Urbina isn't the only U.S. major leaguer to have been a victim of crime in Venezuela. Richard Hidalgo, a right fielder for the Texas Rangers, was shot in the left forearm during a 2002 carjacking attempt.

Nevertheless, many of the dozens of Venezuelan players in the U.S. major leagues return to their homeland in the winter to play in the Venezuelan league and spend time with their families and friends -- regularly in the poor neighborhoods where they grew up.

Crime has touched Urbina's family before. His father, Juan, died a decade ago while resisting a robbery attempt in Caracas.

Of course it's all about winning, I don't fault the Yankees for wanting to win. I just question their strategy. Throughout the 80's they had the highest paid roster in baseball and couldn't win anything. Finally they stopped throwing money at players and developed some of their own( Jeter,Williams, Rivera, etc). They complemented those players not with free agent "mercenaries" but with quality character guys like Brossius,Girardi, O'Neill, etc. The result-4 World Series titles in 5 years. What happens next? They start throwing money around again(Mussina,Giambi,Contreras, etc) and acquire players of questionable character (Mondesi,K. Brown,Loaiza, etc). The result-- 0 titles in the last 4 years.

Of course, as a lifelong Red Sox fan living in S. Florida who adopted the Marlins as his favorite National League team, I hope the Yankees continue to maintain that "will to win".

What is it that you're not following? This is Clemens' deal, not the Yankees'. NY has nothing to do with it. Clemens, along with his agent, negotiated this into his contract (probably his last one) on his wishes. The Yankees would just happen to be a beneficiary if it came down to that.

I'll also add that we've already won 2 championships with Clemens. He's hardly of the character of those guys that you'd like to think is the cause of a 4 yr drought--one that many teams would love to be able to lay claim to.

I never thought of Clemens as a bad character guy either untill the last year or so. First he tells the Yankees he's retiring, only to sign with Houston. Since he signed at a bargain price, I beleived he wanted to play close to home and his family was the most important thing. Then? He won't commit to coming back, asks for a record 20 million in arb., "settles" for 18 mill. and from what you're saying, has the audacity to predemand that he be allowed to bail on the team if they aren't good enough? How would you feel if RJ demanded that he be traded at midseason if the Yankees were losing. I just don't have much respect for Clemens and would be suprised the Yankees would welcome him back.

Wray

Because he was going to retire... until he learned that he could probably win his arbitration case. Why not stay one more year and make an extra $18 mil? I would do it, and so would you.

How would you feel if RJ demanded that he be traded at midseason if the Yankees were losing.

When it comes to baseball, we'll just have to agree to disagree. Not suprising for a Red Sox and a Yankee fan.

A rarity, I know. :p :D

I don't know if anyone has made mention of this (or if anyone cares), but the Tigers' Ugueth Urbina's mother has been saved from the kidnappers in Venezuela that were holding for half a year for a $6M ransom. I honestly wondered if she was even still alive.

Hopefully he continues to be an effective setup man, either as trade bait or as a permanent Tiger, during their climb towards .500 ball.

Get this: Clemens supposedly has a Yankee clause in his contract. It says that if the Astros are out of contention by mid-season, he can request a trade to the Yankees.I know Clemens is a professional baseball player and is highly respected by most fans and players, but, just a question, how would you feel if a great pitcher on your team was watching another teams record all year long and your team struggled a little mentally from this? I would think: so THAT guy can go to a team that will probably win, and we are stuck without a stud pitcher. What "team player" of the Astros organization agreed to this bologna?

Hey Wray: Just for fun: I heard that Peyton Manning has a clause in his contract that when Favre retires Manning will go to the Packers :D

I think you're reading into this too much. Its not something that will likely happen. The Astros were one game away from the WS, and even with the loss of Beltran, it would take a complete and total collapse for them to be out of contention by midseason.

Hey Wray: Just for fun: I heard that Peyton Manning has a clause in his contract that when Favre retires Manning will go to the Packers :D

Yeah, but in return we get your 3 best players and your top 4 draft picks for the next 57 years. :D

The Red Sox players are really giving it to A-Rod. It cracks me up to hear Kevin Millar join in. This is the same guy who said that he wanted A-Rod to come to Boston when they were trying to trade for him. :wtf

Should make for an exciting season between Boston and New York.

Go Yanks!

Yeah, I have to admit Kevin can really stick his foot in his mouth sometimes. A-Rod is the best thing to happen to this rivalry. When the Yanks were winning all their titles, I found myself having a hard time completely despising them. They really had a classy manager and a bunch of good guys. I worked at a Sports Authority for a time and met lots of famous athletes. By far, Paul O'Neill was the nicest. (on the other hand Len Dykstra was the biggest ass).

A-Rod now finally gives the Yankees a true villian. Living in S. Florida, I can remember all the attention he got in high school, it seem as if I've been hearing about this jerk for my entire life. I thank God the deal with the Red Sox fell through and am happy my most hated player ended up with my most hated team. Jeter,Williams, Posada, et al. are just quality players and individuals, could never totally hate them like with A-Rod.

Go Sox!

A-Rod is a GREAT Baseball player, you cant argue that fact.

A-Rod is a complete phony prick as a person. Does he really think he is fooling people with his nice guy act?

RedSox fans that say you did not or would not want A-Rod in a Red Sox jersey are kidding yourselves.

I wont even watch sound bites with A-Rod on sports center anymore, the guy is a three dollar bill. I think its a shame he plays for the Yankee's, Jeter and the rest of the Yanks deserve better than this tool. A-Rod brings the Yankee organization down IMHO.

Uhhhh no.
A-rod left the Mariners a LONG time ago. I was pissed at how he lied when he left the Mariners. Alex said he wanted to play for a winner when in fact he wanted to play for who ever would pay him the most money. A-rod is a GREAT player no doubt, is he a great Yankee like Jeter - NO!! Is A-Rod a selfish prick who should learn to keep his mouth shut - YES!! Notice Jeter or Williams have been very quiet and have not been exchanging barbs back and through the press, because they don’t feel the need to tell the world they are champions. A-Rod beat the RedSox and win a ring then you can talk shit. Funny thing is that Jeter and the rest of the Yanks don’t even talk shit after they win.

If you are thinking I am a Yankee hater you are completely wrong, I have nothing but respect for the Yankee organization. Look back you will see me defending the Yank's when ever someone starts crying about how the Yank's buy WS Championships. To say I am bitter because A-rod is a Yank is not true at all.

Uh,no. Personally for this Red Sox fan, I never liked the guy. Again, believe it or not, there were stories as far back as his high school days down here about what a jerk he was. Truthfully, if the Sox were going to trade for him last year and make him their third baseman, I might have been ok with that, but considering that Nomar was only my favorite player for the last 10 years, I was not happy with the Sox going after him and trying to dump Nomar. It still makes me sad that the championship was acheived without him. Would you still have been happy trading for A-Rod last year if it meant getting rid of Jeter? Thought not.

Drove past the site of old Municipal Stadium here in West Palm Beach this morning. Still have part of the outfield wall and scoreboard amongst the (very) tall grass behind the Home Depot. One of these days I've gotta swing into Home Depot and see if they have any kind of mention of it. Probably some time when I've thought to bring my camera!

And you're not a Cubs fan??? Shame shame shame. Even though Bill Buckner is still a cuss word in Beantown, he was my baseball idol as a kid. When he went to the Red Sox, I started to root for them. '86 made me damn near puke. I felt worse for him than I did the team. I didn't understand the whole drought thing or get in to the Goat/Bambino curses until later.

If I may induldge you all of a fun story about me meeting my all time favorite player for the only time.

Later, after Buckner retired, I was doing a live remote at John O' Donnell Stadium, when he was coaching for the White Sox Class A team. I, somehow, lucked into interviewing him. I'd show a picture, but it's buried with my uncle. He was there that night and got to meet him too.

Anyway, I told him before the interview that I wouldn't bring up the '86 Series. He was shocked and asked why. When I told him about his "hero/cult status" with me as a kid, and how it tore me up to see that happen to him, I just can't bring myself to ask a question that is going to dog him the rest of his life.

Buckner was always the practical joker. I was asking a question about whether he'd ever return to the Cubs organization to coach; when he suddenly looked at me like a junkyard dog, and snarled.."aren't you gonna ask me about '86 man?"

It's one of the few times I had ever been speechless around a celebrity/interview. It was, like 90 degrees in the early evening and the sweat that trickled down my ass crack was sooooooooooooooooooooooo cold. Then he and my uncle cracked up and Buckner bought my uncle the beer they bet.

The bet was that Buckner had never met a interviewer that he could stop dead cold in his tracks. They just rolled right on, not missing a beat. So my uncle told him that if he were to ask me when I was gonna ask about '86, it would stop me dead in my tracks, because of how much hearing the question repeated over and over and over, pissed me off. Buckner didn't believe him and the bet and joke was on. My uncle had this uncanny way of getting me, when I was in this kind of situation, to break interviewer protocol. He did it three times I can remember. Buckner, Sandberg and Ron Santo. But, they are memories I wouldn't trade for. Not even a WS ring.

To this day, I still root for the Red Sox in the AL. I'm not as fanatical about them as I am the Cubs, but the love is there. :thumb:

Let's get back to reality, shall we? Trying to compare Nomar to DJ outside of raw stats is ridiculous. While Jeter was busting his face up diving into the stands, Nomar was on the bench exaggerating an injury because he couldn't get a contract extension.

There's a reason DJ was never expected to give up his position for the best player in baseball. Not only that, but while the Red Sox fans around here were claiming that A-Rod would take over at SS for the Yankees "within a few years," DJ was winning a Gold Glove. :)

I'm in reality, you my friend are deep in blind Yankee la la land. The only comparison I was making between Nomar and Jeter was how each team's fans would have felt to see either pushed out the door. As a Red Sox fan, Nomar was the franchise for a long time and it hurt to all of a sudden see him pushed to the door, regardless of who was replacing him. The fact it was a player I didn't like just made it worse. Nowhere did I compare Jeter and Nomar as players, only their value to their fans. Of course Nomar's I'm hurt, whiny, sulky act ocurred after all the A-Rod business and he had to go at that point.

BTW, funniest thing I ever read was just after the ALCS on a Yankee message board. Yankee fan wrote "Jeter should go to the Red Sox. They always get all our old players when they're no good anymore. Then A-rod will take over the team and lead us to a World Series."

Bill Buckner got the rawest deal of all time. To the average baseball fan, they probably think that if Buckner made the play the Sox would have won, and his missing it cost them the series.WRONG.

1.The score was already tied when Buckner missed the ball. The best that would have happened was the game kept going into extras.

2. This was game 6. There was a Game 7.

Nobody ever talks about game 7, or the fact the Sox bullpen blew a two run lead with 2 out/nobody on--before the error. It was a team choke that somehow Billy takes all the blame for. His error hurt for sure, maybe the Sox could have won in extras, but it was no worse than a few other things that happened. Mostly I blame the media, at this point that one play is the only thing shown or talked about on TV.

Hey, I guess sometimes people like to irrationally blame someone and create a goat, ask Steve Bartman.

Hello. Post after post, you are telling me what my own personal opinion is. Hello? You don't know me how do you know what my opinion is/was? I said that I didn't ever like A-Rod and that I didn't want him playing for Boston and that I loved Nomar and considered him the franchise for a long time. How can you possibly sit there and tell me that my own personally held opinions aren't what they were? You tell me that no, I wanted A-Rod, that Nomar didn't mean that much to me. Hello, you don't know me, how do you know what my opinions are? You may disagree with my opinions, which is perfectly fine, but I don't understand how you can sit there and try to tell me that my own opinions aren't what they are. Get it now???

BTW, Nomar was one of the most beloved Red Sox ever and the reason Boston looked to replace him was they were afraid they couldn't sign him. The comparison I made to Jeter was not as to who was better, but as to the popularity of each player among their respective fans. Apparently though you know more about Red Sox fans than me, as you don't seem to think he held that kind of ststus--to Red Sox fans. He was only their most popular player in the last 25 years.

Any other opinions I hold that you want to say aren't really true? Maybe you want to question whether VHII is really my favorite VH album? (Although that actually does change from time to time).

Man if this is what its like as pitchers and catchers report, I'm sure there'll be some real fireworks during the season. Still, I'm just happy to be finally talking baseball--even if it is with a Yankee fan.

I never wanted ARod to come to NY originally for three reasons -

1.) Because of that ridiculous contract that Boras extorted on his behalf. (Now I just hate Boras for driving up prices with every one of his clients. The man is evil and bad for the game.)

2.) He was a phenomenal talent I had conditioned myself to loathe simply because he played for another team. LOL (That kind of remedied itself in my mind, obviously)

3.) I assumed it would mean Jeter would be forced to move positions or be traded himself. (The fact that Arod would change positions in order to make the trade happen tells me he isn't as self-centered and pompous as he is made out to be.)

After I found out he was coming to NY, I was happy. I mean, come on - who would not want great talent on their team? I've never heard about him being a jackass in person, but even if he is, what does that mean to me? I want to watch him play ball and win games, not date him and get in his pants. :D I really don't get the whole drama about his talking about his workout regimen. Players say shit all the time that can come off as tooting their own horn, but I just didn't see it that way. What I REALLY don't get, is why do the Boston players feel so threatened by those comments and take them personally? Whatever - I just think it's stupid when trash-talking wars start between players on rival teams. Shut up and play ball.

I felt the same way when Sheffield came to NY - I always thought he was a major cocksucker, but I don't have much of a beef with him anymore. I'd still rather have had Vlad, but Shef is obviously a top-notch player and had a great season while hurt last year.

Funny how rivalries play a factor in our perception of players sometimes. I thought the world of Schilling before he went to Boston, but he became a bigmouthed jackass IMO simply because of the rivalry factor. I still think he's an incredible talent and admire his success as a ballplayer, but I definitely look at him differently now because of his comments regarding the NY-Bos rivalry.

Please. If they weren't threatend they would have never opened their mouths. Regardless, it certainly speaks volumes on the professionalism of your franchise compared to ours. :)

At least none of our current players are embroiled in a steroid scandal. Unlike Giambi and that piece of shit Sheffield. Add A-Rod and his lame attempt to cheat his way on to first base last year during the ALCS. NOW THAT IS WHAT I CALL PROFESSIALISM!

We may be talking shit right now, because as Bernie Williams said, we earned the right to talk. We're the champs! We got the job done when nobody thought we could. The Yankees thought we were already dead in the water and they were wrong. I hope you guys keep Mattingly around for a long time. You know why? He's the new curse. The Yanks couldn't win when he was a player and they haven't won since he became a coach.

Come to think of it, no team A-Rod has ever been has won a damn thing either. All I know is he better produce a hell of a lot more than he did last year or he's going to be in the hot seat with George Porgey. Especially since The Boss "wants to be more like Jeter".

Yeah he might plan on it. But what about the other four question marks in your rotation.

And Boston doesn't have question marks in their rotation?

Wade Miller is coming off a torn labrum and this is what the scouting report says on him : "He can be a strong No. 4 or good No. 3 starter, and team officials still think if he puts it all together one year, he'll win 20. This season, however, they will be happy if he can report on time and stay healthy for the season..

Matt Clement? Here's his W/L record and ERA for the last 6 years, from 1999 through 2004 : 10-12/4.48; 13-17/5.48; 9-10/5.05; 12-11/3.60; 14-12/4.11; 9-13/3.68. Some scouting comments on Clement - "Clement is somewhat of a fussbudget on the mound, and he slows the game down considerably with men on base. He is prone to occasional wildness, usually ranking among the league leaders in wild pitches...." ..... "Clement is only an adequate fielder who has had trouble throwing the ball to bases on grounders."

Schilling is still one of the game's dominant pitchers, but how is going to respond to offseason surgery? That's a question mark, even though I think he is likely to bounce back.

David Wells? Shit, he has defied the odds with aging for a long time and has a bad back, which is not the same for a 41-year-old as it is for a guy that is 28.

Yanks have question marks? Sure they do, but you're in no position to act smug about it.

BOSTON RED SOX - 2004 World Series Champions (Hey Yankees Who's Your Daddy Now!)

Boston just won their first WS title in a period longer than most people's lifespans. So now you're going to act like you've got a dynasty going? :p

A-Rod is Jason Varitek's bitch. And if he gets out of line he'll get another catchers mit right in his pretty boy fag face.

C'mon, Wolfman. Don't you see it? Look at the question marks in Mussina and Pavano. Moose only threw a near perfect game against the Red Sox in the ALCS and Pavano only has a 1.40 postseason ERA.

Wright is a definite question mark, but Brown is a top tier starter when he's not punching walls. I'll take that considering Boston's whole staff is a question mark right now... possibly 2-5 is Schilling's ankle holds up.

None of your players that you know of. ;) I'm pretty much kidding, but I guarantee you that MLB would find a good 2-3 players on each team that have juiced and never been caught. I think most of what Canseco has said in public and his book is pure shit, but I do suspect that steroid use is a little more widespread that Giambi, Sheffield, and Bonds.

Arod's slap at the ball was indeed lame, but one play out of the season does not define the professionalism of a team.

We may be talking shit right now, because as Bernie Williams said, we earned the right to talk. We're the champs! We got the job done when nobody thought we could.

Be careful what you take out of context. Williams also said that he didn't remember rivalries being played out in the papers through trash-talking, but on the field through ballgames - and that the stuff off-field is becoming ugly.

Here's the thing - Boston does have every right to hold their heads up high for ending their drought and surprising the world in the way they did it. I also think that their drought ending was a great thing for baseball. Not only because it is an end to frustration and a gift to loyal fans, but because we won't have to hear all those damned mentions of "the curse" anymore.

That said, I don't think any team that has had championship success should stoop to the level of trash-talking any of their opponents, whether it is their most heated rival or their easiest whipping-boy foe.

I hope you guys keep Mattingly around for a long time. You know why? He's the new curse. The Yanks couldn't win when he was a player and they haven't won since he became a coach.

Jesus, Mattingly became a coach a YEAR AGO, ass. You're going to call the guy a curse after one year? What is your problem with taking these little molehills and trying to turn them into mountains? Did Boston win a WS with Boggs? With Clemens? With Yaz? With Ted Williams?

Were those players not great because of that? Fuck, no. They were some of the best ballplayers ever, yet they never won a WS title in Boston. So were they curses to Boston because the Sox didn't win with them on board?

Come to think of it, no team A-Rod has ever been has won a damn thing either. All I know is he better produce a hell of a lot more than he did last year or he's going to be in the hot seat with George Porgey. Especially since The Boss "wants to be more like Jeter".

A lot of teams have had stellar talent that weren't able to win championships. IMO, it is usually due largely to three things -

1.) Spending all of their money on a few players and not addressing all of their needs as a club/poor spending practices. See Peter Angelos of Baltimore for a great example of that.

2.) No team unity. Boston had some things this past year that helped NY during their run from 1996-2000 - camaraderie, trust in each other, lack of ego problems and clubhouse dissension, team play, and overall cohesiveness.

3.) Poor coaching/management and front-office skills. Another great move that I think Boston made to achieve success is one other that helped NY as well - bring in a youthful front office and give them the freedom to make decisions. After NY had success with Cashman, bringing Theo in was a very smart move. I think most players right now are more comfortable with younger GM's than some crotchety old farts that have jumpred from mediocre team to mediocre team for years.

BTW, Arod's numbers lat year may be down for him, but I think most teams would love to have more players that 36/106/.286, with 28 SB's and solid fielding defense. ;)

Sarcasm duly noted, my man. ;)

BUT - NY's rotation DOES have question marks. Do I think they are all legit? No, but then again my point about Schilling is not likely to be prophetic. Mussina has had a loss in effectiveness the last couple of years. Wright may be a question mark, but he is comin off the heels of a rejuvenation thanks to working with the great Leo Mazzone. Brown is a scare just witing to happen, IMO. Between the bad back and his lack of control over his emotions, I'm always on edge thinking about him. Does RJ's body (ironically) finally decide to give up on him now that he is in NY? Pavano just had his first stellar year, which makes most people think he has a lot to prove, but I think the guy is going to be a great pitcher.

Wray
02.23.05, 08:11 PM
Pavano is going to be huge. One other thing that is going be huge is that now with Tino anchoring 1st, we have one of the best--if not the best--infield defenses in the game. Two Gold Glover's on the right side and Womack and Tino on the left along with Georgie behind the plate... stellar shit.

He was almost attacking the press. It was like he tried to go on the offensive in hopes that everyone would forget that he is the guilty party.

Surprising, huh? ;) LOL

I find it amazing how people have given Barry the benefit of the doubt and put him on a pedestal ever since he started the "kinder, gentler Barry" act a few years ago. The guy had always been one of the most egotistical, shit-stirring, self-centered pricks in the game up until that point, and I imagine his act the last few years has been like walking over hot coals for him every day that he has pretended to be someone that he isn't. Now that he has broken the record for HR's in a season and is breathing down the neck of the all-time record, people think he's great. Nevermind that his path to those has been marked with suspicion and a wary eye. His previous high was 49 dingers in a year, and then all of a sudden he hits 73? Give me a break.

I think now that he is finally taking some heat in the press, his true self is just going to re-emerge with a vengeance. He will most likely pass up Ruth and Aaron very soon, but I hope somebody displaces him ASAP so that his image doesn't sit on those records for long.

Giambi obviously made a big mistake, as did Sheffield. At least Giambi had the humility to face it publicly and address it. That doesn't make what he did right, and I think he deserves every bit of crap he takes over it in the meantime. But Bonds is just so smug and lies through his teeth every time he speaks. I read two great articles about him and his involvement in the BALCO scandal in a Sports Illustrated recently. I wish I had the issue in hand to quote from.

Here's something I pulled off of ESPN.com (ssssshhhh!!!) about Lee Mazilli (the O's skipper) not allowing music in the locker room. His answer is pretty damn funny...

Sosa created a stir in Chicago with a boom-box that ultimately was destroyed by a teammate. That won't be a problem in Baltimore; Mazzilli does not allow the players to listen to music before games, except through headphones.

"That's the rule and they all go by it," Mazzilli said. "If I listen to your 50 Cent, then you should be able to listen to my Dean Martin."

Dean Martin is soooooo much better than that 50 Crap, uh... I mean Cent. As for Sosa becoming an O, I say thank you to Mr. Angelos, Flannagin (sp??), and Beattie. Eventhough they couldn't land Delgado and/or Pavano, adding Sosa to a strong middle batting order can't hurt. I mean Sosa was out for don't know how many games last year w/ a bad back and he still hit 35 long balls which was more than any other O's player last year. Adding Sosa to line-up with Tejada, Raffy, and Lopez can only help them. Will they be contenders in the East?? I don't think they will until they improve on their starting rotation.

Man, Yankees/Red Sox is almost like the Sam/Dave debate. People get vicious. For the other Red Sox fans on the board, let me share a story.

I was born in S. Florida and we had no baseball team in 1980 when I first got interested in the game, so because my family was from RI and all die hard Red Sox fans I became one too.(Although I do root for the Fins not the Pats.) Visited Boston in 1982 and saw my first ever game in person. Tigers/Red Sox in Fenway, Kirk Gibson hits a double in the 7th to put the Tigers up by two. Bottom of the ninth down by two, two outs, Rick Miller walks. Dwight Evans then homers to tie the game. In the 11th the Red Sox send up a rookie to pinch hit. First pitch, gone, over the monster, ball game. Rookie's first major league home run, his name--Wade Boggs. At that moment, a love for the Sox(and automatically disdain for the Yanks)was sealed. Been a tortured fan ever since. Whoops, can't say tortured anymore, make that just a fan.

Never retaliate? Maybe not against the Red Sox (because there would be a beating). But I seem to remember a little game back when Clemens was a Yankee where he INTENTIALLY picked up a piece of Mike Piazza's broken bat and PURPOSELY threw it in Piazza's direction.

Once again the lack of professionalism thing again. And once again a Yankee fan trying to make excuses and trying to justify unjustifyable behavior.

And while I'm at it let me also state, Don Zimmer left the bench, during that now infamous game, with the intention of harming a player of an opposing team. Pedro defended himself and had every right to do so!!! And please spare me the bullshit about Zimmer's age etc. Pedro pushed him down, when if he had really wanted to, he could have decked him, so don't even go there.

Pedro pushed him down, when if he had really wanted to, he could have decked him, so don't even go there.I'm starting to think that Clemens should purposely throw a bat in YOUR direction.

Pretty Friggin Amusing:
Boston's 'JeterCenter?"
Yanks fan wins 1-day naming rights for Boston arena

Derek Jeter, the Yankees' captain, has led the franchise to four World Series titles.
AP

BOSTON (AP) -- The arena is in downtown Boston, the heart of Red Sox Nation. There couldn't be a bigger insult than to name it after the captain of the hated New York Yankees.

But that's just what Manhattan lawyer Kerry Konrad aims to do next Tuesday after his $2,325 bid won an eBay auction giving him the one-day naming rights to the FleetCenter.

Konrad's proposed name: the Derek Jeter Center, after the Yankee shortstop.

His winning bid threw the FleetCenter brass into a dilemma.

"I told him, 'I don't think we can approve that name,'" arena spokesman Jim Delaney said.

He said he would talk it over Friday with FleetCenter president Richard Krezwick and a decision would be made by the end of the day. Arena officials have reserved the right to approve or reject any winning bid.

The FleetCenter is home to the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins. The name became obsolete after Bank of America acquired FleetBoston Financial last year and the Charlotte, N.C., banking giant opted not to retain the naming rights.

While the arena's owner, Delaware North Cos., searches for a new long-term partner, it has been offering one-day naming rights on eBay and donating the proceeds to charity. Past winners have included an online casino and a California man who named it for his wife as a Valentine's Day present. The names are posted on signs around the arena and on fleetcenter.com

Konrad, a Harvard alum, had the high bid for the March 1 naming rights. His wife, Nina Webb, said it was part of a 20-year college rivalry with some Boston buddies.

Delaney said Konrad has been understanding about their predicament, even suggesting that if his Boston friends match his winning bid, they can all settle on a 24-hour name for the arena.

"That name may not be as bad as A-Rod," Delaney said, referring to Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriquez, "but it's still considered obscene."

To all Yanks fans: How priceless would it be if this actually went through? Derek Jeter Center , at least for a day, RIGHT IN THE RED SOX BACKYARD. Brings a smile to my face.

What's embarassing? SIX Red Sox players taking shots at A-Rod, without him saying shit about the Red Sox. SIX. Shut the fuck up and play, guys. Yeah, you beat them in games 4-7, but you didn't win the division, and you were damn lucky you even GOT to games 4-7. Be humble, be professional, and be good winners - you've been good losers for a long time now.

What's embarassing? Some of the Red Sox fans in this thread. The Red Sox have been the Yank's bitch for 86 years, and after ONE title we're going to talk shit? WTF is THAT? Sure, it's fun to talk smack, but the level some fans are taking it to is ridiculous. I don't like sore losers, and I sure as hell don't like arrogant winners. That's one of the things I hate about the Yankees, is their arrogant fans. I'll be DAMNED if I become what I abhor...

I saw it with the Pats too - it's getting a little out of hand.

Confidence is one thing, homerism/fanaticism is one thing, this cockiness/arrogance sucks.

Fine, I'll say it - I've NEVER seen a region with as much penis envy as Boston has for NYC. Everything NY is seen with absolute animosity, which IMO stems from envy. That's too bad, because frankly, I've lived down there, I VASTLY prefer living up here. There is NOTHING I prefer about the NY Metro area to Boston, but the jealousy up here is off the charts.

Are you trying to goad me into a personal verbal war?! If so, I advise against it, I have never done anything or said anything about you that was derrogatory. And why would you want to brawl with me? Because I'm a Sox fan or because you represent the typical Yankees fan: cocky, arrogant and believe that whom ever wears a Yankee uniform is allowed to say and act any way they wish because they wear that uniform.

However if your looking for a fight, Make no mistake I will, if provoked, treat you like Varitek treated A-Rod. With that said, I harbor no ill will, but if your looking to start something by calling me a jackass than I'll be more than happy to finish it. :irked:

How's my schizophrenic little friend? Taking the tone of a pacifist in half of the post, and an aggressive tone in the other? I must say, that's some funny shit. :D You need to make up your mind, schizoid. :)

If you don't want to be called a jackass, then don't be a jackass. That's easy enough, even for you. "The curse of Don Mattingly?" Yeah, that's clear jackassery. Other than that, you should untwist your panties if you're going to stick around here. We love to fling each other shit, and it's all in good fun. However, make no mistake; if you act like a jackass, you'll get treated like one. I certainly have no qualms about that.

]Moving off the ridiculous into "mere" fanatacism, wray - you are being a complete blind homer on these rotation issues. There are absolutely equal questions marks with BOTH staffs. Every single thing you can say is a question mark on the Red Sox is also a question mark on the Yankees. And, pretty much, vice versa.

I never denied any question marks, IED, but "equal question marks with both staffs" is certainly a bit of hyperbole. Our #1 guy isn't coming off of ankle surgery, and even though I think he'll be fine, it's still a huge question mark that we don't have.

No, but you're number one guy is 3 years older, has a bad back, and receives injections ino his knee because he has no cartilage. Let's face it, both teams have serious question marks in the rotation.

Age--Johnson,Brown, Wells, Schilling,Wakefield, even Moose.
Injury-Schilling,Miller,Johnson, Brown
Makeup in new city/league-Clement,Pavano, Wright

Lots of questions, but lets face it if either team's rotation falters they'll just go out and supplement during the year. How about Clemens in pinstripes again and Ben Sheets for the Red Sox?

The name Derek Jeter is now officially "vulgar and obscene" in Boston! LMFAO!!!! I'm sorry, I just can't stop laughing after reading this.... LOL!

Fleet Center officials reject 'vulgar' Jeter Center (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=1999921)

There will be no Derek Jeter Center after all.

On Tuesday, New York attorney Kerry Konrad won the right in an eBay auction to name Boston's FleetCenter for a day. For his $2,325, Konrad wanted to honor the New York Yankees shortstop.

But, on Friday, FleetCenter officials rejected the name, which Konrad hoped would add to the 25-year rivalry he has had with his former college classmates who are Boston Red Sox fans.

"We decided that all the names had to be rated G, and this name was determined to be obscene and vulgar," said Richard A. Krezwick, president and chief executive of the FleetCenter, which has auctioned off daily naming rights to about a dozen companies since its contract with the bank was terminated. "We were afraid of the volume of phone calls bogging down our switchboard, the number of e-mails clogging our portal and the potential graffiti on the side of our building."

When reached at his office, Konrad said he was not disappointed.

"I had no idea that this joke would get so much attention in the first place," Konrad said. "It was a joke. I've already had my laugh. But I could have made it much worse, like the A-Rod Center, Bucky Dent Center, the Aaron Boone Center, or the 'Only 25 More [championships] To Go' Center."

Instead, on March 1, the building will be named the Jimmy Fund Center. Jerry Rappaport Jr., Konrad's ex-college roommate and Red Sox fan, added $6,275 to Konrad's bid -- to reach $8,600 in total to signify the 86-year Boston Red Sox curse that was broken in 2004. The money will go to The Jimmy Fund, which supports the fight against cancer through Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Krezwick said that it's not likely that any future auction winner would get by with naming the arena after anyone associated with the Yankees organization.

"I got a lot of e-mails from Red Sox fans in Boston who tipped their cap to me," Konrad said. "They left the back door open. I'm sure if [Yankees owner] George Steinbrenner were foolish enough to auction off the naming rights to Yankee Stadium for a day, Red Sox fans would have thought of something clever."

The FleetCenter is the home of the NBA's Celtics and NHL's Bruins. No events are planned on March 1 -- the NHL is locked out, and the Celtics have an off-day.

Uh, now the whole Red Sox/Yankees thing is because the city of Boston envies the city of NY? That's funny, I don't know any Celts fans envious of the Knicks, Bruins fans envious of the Rangers, or Pats fans envious of the Jets. Admittedly, much of the animosity Red Sox fans feel toward the Yankees is due to the Yankees amazing success during those 86 years. Some of it is envy, but some also has to do with the Yanks knocking out the Sox in 49,78,99,03, etc. It's not penis envy, 26 World Series titles envy maybe, but not penis envy. Besides, it's quite clear New York fans don't like Boston fans any better. It's only a baseball rivarlry, not a socological phenomenon.

I know what he's referring to and you know I don't give a shit about that - a championship's a championship - hell, let's not count the Yankees championships won before 1977 because weren't a whole lot of people around these parts that were around to see 'em anyway. I'm not talking about "The Curse," billy. I'm simply talking about the acquisition. That's what ignited the rivalry, regardless of "The Curse." The other five championships mean something to Boston fans, as they should, but they mean nothing to the rivalry. There was no rivalry until 1920.

billy007
02.26.05, 06:32 PM
I'm not much of a historian on the rivalry, but it didn't exist in 1920 either. All that existed was a stupid move on the part of Red Sox management. The rivalry didn't begin until sometime after the Yankees had won championships and we hadn't - but whose to say when? After they won 3 in the '20s? After they tacked on 5 more in the '30s? I would say it was probably picking up steam after they added 4 in the '40s and then 6 in the '50s. But when they only added two more in the '60s and we actually went to two World Series before they returned in '76 it probably died down a bit. Indeed, at some points during the '70s it seemed like the Orioles were more of a rival (still rememeber that series the Red Sox played down there where someone had scratched "SOX SUX" in big letters in the infield grass) than the Yankees. Not that we ever gave up hating the Yankees, though. But still "the rivalry" is hard to quantify. Some could say it started the minute the teams first faced each other in 1901. But I don't think anyone who was around in 1920 had any idea what was about to happen... Remember, the Yankees never even had been to the World Series at that point, so there was no indication of the dominance to come. And still it took 'em 3 years before they won one of the damn things. But again, it's all ancient history and it doesn't matter how many World Series the Yankees have won since 1920, 1923, 1977 or whenever you want to draw the line. The only numbers that count are that the Yankees have won 26 and the Red Sox have now won 6. But in the 21st century (if you ascribe to the notion that the 21st century began on January 1, 2001) it's Red Sox 1, Yankees 0! :D
