View Full Version : Mike in Val's book

For those of you who read Valerie's book, what did she have to say about Mike. In general? i'm sure there's nothing in it regarding his dismissal from VH, but i'm curious how he comes across thru her POV.

Didn't discuss it at all.
Seeing as how her son was in the band upon the book's release, I didn't expect much talk about Mike.

Probably just didn't know him. I doubt he hung out with Eddie/Alex much.

she didn't say anything at all about him, which was kind of disappointing. She goes on and on about Wolfgang so much, and yes it is her son, but I found it frustrating because once again, there's no mention of Mike being alive, let alone what he brought to the band. She even talks about Sam a bit, but nothing about Mike.

I don't remember her mentioning him so she must not have unless just in passing! It was a book about her and her life, and although there was more about the band than I expected, she barely mentioned Alex except in terms of her meeting him first, briefly mentioning traveling with him and his fiance, an intervention with Eddie and the death of the boys parents....if she's not talking that much about her ex husbands brother..why would she mention her ex husbands co worker? There were very few mentions of Sammy as well
from the book, my impression was that at some point after say 1995, she was disconnected from her husband, and by extension, the band
she does say that she wants to write more books...that she has much more to say....I guess we just wait to see if the sitcom is picked up to see what she will do next to keep herself in the public eye
by the way....she's supposed to be on Rachel Ray on wednesday

I seriously read this as "Mike in Vai's book".
I was about to go to amazon and search for a Steve Vai autobiography.

Was there something that was mentioned about a possible sitcom that I missed? I thought there was discussions of a "talk show" but I could be mistaken.

Yeah, I think somebody did a while back, but I've gotta ask what does that have to do with Val mentioning Mike? I know that I do get off track in threads sometimes, and I don't do it intentionally, it just the way my mind works, but come on! Why dwell on sad, terrible things, ya know? I'm sure that tore Ed's heart out, and if (and that's a big IF) he does read any of these sites from time to time, I don't think he'd want to think about it. No wonder Ed tells people on the net to get a life.

In the audio version, there is a reference to Mike and Sam badmouthing Ed and Val.
She also said that since Ed is an alcoholic, he was a "me v. the world" mentality - in other words, he looks for enemies. I am sure that when MA went out in '01, his future was pretty much sealed.

As soon as they qualify....
Mitch: Never actually took the VH gig, so he couldnt have been tossed
Alex: still hangin in there
Gary: Quit before he could be tossed
Dave: Hasnt been tossed yet, but Im sure he's in the warmup circle
Val: Tossed VH, not the other way around
Sass: Only jammed, and according to reliable sources, did NOT get tossed from the studio
Wolfgang: Lacking in seniority, plus hasnt been tossed.

Tear Ed's heart out? Val is still naive enough to think she actually cheated on Ed before he cheated on her.....she also stops just short of admitting Ed and Patti Smyth were doing it back in 1985.....she thinks or thought they were "just friends"

It would be cool to have seen Mike become a hired gun...since that's how Ed and Al treated him anyway....I seriously doubt Mike would of had a tough time getting and keeping gigs especially by 1985....he would have been in demand alot

Sheehan actually talked about this abit back in 86-88, something along the lines of Dave and Ed came to see Talas play and they asked him to join VH...a few days later Ed called him up and said he couldn't do that to Mike and took the offer back. Originally I always thought it was Dave who pushed for it more than Ed. I know now that I was probably wrong....really breaks my heart to see what an a-hole ed has turned in over the last few years...

If you can think of a better reason, go ahead. Everybody seems to think Ed deserves some kind of a break, well he doesn't, because it's not meant harmfully or in an insulting way, it's just how things were, and maybe still are. I don't mean to be rude by suggesting a better reason, I'd be interested to read it, but there is absolutely no sugarcoating what EVH is. The band slowly declined with every autonomous decision he made, and we all know he wasn't in his right mind, who knows when the hell he was last.
Even so, I don't know how much of a mess Ed was then. I suspect his tensions with Dave may have had something to do with it.

I just could'nt see Billy in VH. He's an awesome bassist, but he's more of a virtuoso. I think it would be too much in the band. I'm sure he can lay down a solid foundation, if need be, but I just could'nt see it working somehow. It did'nt work for me the first time around in Dave's band with Vai. It was just overload.

VH with Sheehan, an unleased Sheehan with creative freedom, would have probably been like Mr Big. I don't think they would have reached the same iconic status or made the same kind of music because they would have been a virtuoso band.

she didn't say anything at all about him, which was kind of disappointing. She goes on and on about Wolfgang so much, and yes it is her son, but I found it frustrating because once again, there's no mention of Mike being alive, let alone what he brought to the band. This has been the policy of anyone from the VH clan for the last 30 years. Michael Anthony was a necessary evil as far as everyone is concerned. In the VH family he's persona non grata at best.
Eddie's skewed parental perspective about his son has made them literally do what they've tried to do with Mad Anthony for years: Erase him from the band. This band is nothing but a series of horrible bad decisions for 15 years, giving his son MA's job is just the latest in a spiral that they will never recover from.
So I'm not surprised Valerie doesn't have anything to say about MA. What's she supposed to say, "Well, MA has never had any decision, say, or pull in VH, so they all just decided to oust him and replace him with Wolfie. It was best for all of us, sorry Michael, but your loyalty, even in the worst of circumstances will be rewarded by taking away the thing you hold most sacred in your life: The VH gig. Thanks for playing, have a nice day, but the VH family would like to continue what they started: ruining the greatest band in history and making them a further public joke".
Did she say anything in the article about Wolfie's bikini bod?

I agree, however, Sheehan has reffered to Roth as the "Note Police", meaning he was not free to play what he wanted.
Of course not, Dave at the time knew what the fans wanted, and a wankfest between Sheehan and Vai wasn't going to move many units and wasn't going to get hot chicks at the show.
I can absolutely see having to rein in Sheehan so that he plays more in the pocket.
I am a bass player, and I will fully admit no where near the league of Sheehan, but as a bass player you have to know your place. You main job is holding down the bottom and maintaining the groove, the little bass fills you get to show off are secondary. If you are in the mix where the bass usually is, not many people notice your fills anyway. People in here who play or really understand music will notice, but John Doe listening to his radio in his car, not a chance.
In my very humble opinion, as impressive as Sheehan is, I wouldn't want in my band if I was trying to be a standard four or five piece rock band. If I was trying to be wanker prog band, sure I would want him, but for Van Halen, AC/DC and bands like that, hell no.
I would take Michael Anthony anyday.

When Dave left VH he didn't have anything band wise.
He knew Sheehan from Talas opening for VH, probably knew he was looking for a gig, and asked him to join.
I'm not trying to diss Billy Sheehan, but most people would not have wanted to listen to 45 minutes of Shyboy type material on the album. I am sure some people would have liked it, but it would never have gone multi-platinum.

There is a segment where she describes the goings on during a stop on the 2004 tour that are fairly disturbing. Apparently EVH was so out of it on whatever he was using that he wound up in a scuffle with David Bertinelli, then proceeded to start screaming at the top of his lungs as security people dragged him away. All in all, a somewhat embarrassing portrait.

Yup, and this was the last show in Tucson. The same show where EVH tried to deck Sammy, and the same show where he smashed his guitar on stage.
EVH was so bad that she feared for his life.
She also is quick to point out that EVH's problems with Sammy in 2004 were for "whatever reason, eddie always blamed his problems on someone and this time it was Sammy".
She also says that she always hung out with Sam as he was the most laid back and enjoyed fine wines backstage. She also professes her liking of DLR.

Well, today that's a little clearer, but back when the split happened, there was nearly as little coming out of either camp as there is today. I remember the morning DJ's on a lot of the rock stations in So Fla speculating as to what had happened, and Val's name came up on more than one ocassion. In this case, hindsight is 20/20, but at the time, everything surrounding the split was about as clear as mud.
