View Full Version : Mike: take advantage of the silence!

I think we're at a unique time where Ed, Sam and Dave are all silent (I'm not even mentionning Al who's been silent since the XXth century expired).
Mike should definitely take advantage of this to release some music. Fans are pretty much starved for anything new and would definitely welcome a Mike solo album, even if he only plays the open E string the whole time! This is the perfect moment, after the huge let down of early 07. The time is right and it might not last in 08.
Mike we want a solo record!!!

If Mike could write a song he would have done so by now. Mike is a bassist and background vocalist for bands. Nothing more and nothing less.

He makes good sauces too buddy.....:D
I'm sure Mike could write a few tunes...Maybe he's got 10 albums worth too.:D ..
I'd buy an album of his for sure....:thumb:
And you know this Plexi? Wow I didn't know you and Mike were so close.
Every half-assed musician can write a song, I'm sure Mike has written some tunes on his own. Just because you haven't heard them, and he hasn't put out a solo record surely doesn't mean he can't and hasn't. Van Halen is about EVH's licks, not Mike's.
You guys love to rip Mike because of his relationship with Sam...it's so fucking sad.

Ahhh...that was a bit harsh...pretty sure Mikey is more than capable of putting together a smokin set of tunes for a disc...where do you get this crap from? Minimize the guy who's made a huge contribution to the band over the years...get real buddy.

Surely you know this as a certainty.
As always, the flipping 'Tard is an even keeled ship of state. :sssh:
Even the biggest Michael Anthony fan can't seriously see a market for a solo album from him. And even if you could fathom it, Van Halen being silent doesn't make the timing better.
It would sell better with VH being in the public eye and functioning, obviously with Mikey in the band. Of course 'sell better' is relative, because it's the difference between it selling 108 copies and only selling 47 copies.

It's true that a solo album from Mike would probably only run the radar on diehard Halen fans.
That said, another Planet Us collaboration or something of its type would be sweet, and potentially marketable. That Billy Gibbons/Jeff Beck/Mike Anthony gig was promising to say the least, even though it was just a jam. Something more formalized in-studio might be interesting.

Why does there have to be a market? Mikey(sorry Max;) )Should put out an album simply cause he wants to and has the capital to.
Don Johnson did. Based on his fame at the time and people telling him ,"Don, i'm telling ya, it well sell gangbusters."
Heck, do it because you only live once and you just felt like it. I'd buy it cause it's Mikey. And Mikey's a cool cat.:thumb:

Mikey has no business putting out solo music.
Sincerely,

That should probably read "if" he wants to, not "cause" he wants to. Because if he wanted to, he'd have done it already, no?
Heck, do it because you only live once and you just felt like it.
He obviously hasn't felt like it in the last 53 years, can't imagine why he would now. And remember, EVERY advertisement or mention of this would contain two key words, Van Halen. Anybody wanna bet how Eddie would react to the Van Halen name being used to sell a Michael Anthony solo album?
I'd buy it cause it's Mikey
Only 46 more to go! :)

Man, you and DIF with you're ninja like post's.:thumb:
Yea, i guess that would be "if" he wants to. Again, maybe it's something he never thought about in the past . Not saying he is thinking about it now.
But maybe these jams he has been participating in has stirred a want to in him. And maybe not. I guess my point was there doesnt necessarily have to be market for it. Certain groups of people will buy it . And if it was with say, Beck, Gibbons, Smith, that would probably draw the interest of fans of those individuals too.
And if said album ever say the light of day, i think Patrick Swayze would give it a listen.:p
Mikey!!;)

Wait, I've got a reason for him to do it, but it's so obscene, out of left field that a lot of people on this board will be shocked. I hesitate to even mention this as no one would believe me.
Hold on tight.
Here it comes...
He could do it...
FOR THE FANS!!!
I know it's a heresy in VH land, but you know, other bands, they do shit like that, it's not dangerous. And go on being a band, they're NOT, I repeat not stricken down by lightning. Just food for thought.

I'd love to hear a solo record from MA. :headbang: Thing is, it wouldn't even go gold. :(
One thing I've formed that opinion on is the past history of many other solo bassist records. Stellar players. For instance:
John Paul Jones
Jack Bruce
Bill Wyman
Chris Squire
John Entwistle
McCartney is the only one I can think of that took off solo-wise. Maybe Michael Anthony isn't in the business to sell records.

I have the first John Paul Jones solo album, Zooma and while it hasn't exactly sold a bucket load, it's still an interesting disc. I'm sure many die hard Led Zeppelin fans would agree if they gave it a listen...
I've still got to pick up a copy of his second album The Thunderthief though.
I can't really see Mike taking the solo road, I'm sure if he doesn't rejoin Van Halen, he'll end up in another band somewhere...

We've been teased with the possibility of new music repeatedly during the last 10 years. We're really starved for new tunes, that's why anything that Mike would do I think would be well received. He would get an instant online buzz for whatever he releases.
It's like the RNRHOF appearance. Normally a Mike speech would not be very high on the wish list of VH fans, everyone was rooting for an Ed/Dave appearance. However since the other guys didn't show up, Mike was the star of the show. Same thing if he releases a solo album this year.

Me neither. I think he's more of a band guy, a supporter if you will. And a damn good supporter he is. What it must take to jam like he does. He knows what he's good at and doesn't try to fix something that's not broken. That's why he'll always be my favorite VH member.

I think doubters of the Mike solo album are essentially correct... if the year was 1995 or any year prior to that.
But the year is now 2007. Let's see what the various VH "factions" have produced recently:
-EVH: mediocre porn instrumentals
-Sammy: crappy "Livin it up" CD
-Dave: piece of shit Diamond Dave CD & a couple of weird bluegrass tunes
So basically the parties involved have lowered the standards to such a level that now a Mike solo album looks like something decent - the bar has been set so low that with a bit of work and the right people around him, Mike could definitely do better than his confused colleagues.

Mike is doing things he has never done before. Singing VH songs with the Wabos and fronting his own Mad Anthony Express. There is no reason he could not release a solo. He can get Sammy to write a few tunes. How about a few covers. I am sure Mike has built up enough good will to get many other top notch players also. I say GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!
