CHICKENFOOT 'Close To Mixing' Debut Album - Jan. 15, 2009

According to bassist Michael Anthony (ex-VAN HALEN), work is continuing on the debut album from CHICKENFOOT, his new collaboration with Sammy Hagar (ex-VAN HALEN), guitar legend Joe Satriani and drummer Chad Smith (RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS). "We're getting close to mixing this thing," he writes on his web site.

Hagar recently told Billboard.com about CHICKENFOOT, "We got in the studio and recorded eight demos in two days. The chemistry is everything in a band. The band changes one guy, sometimes the whole damn thing changes — look what happened when I joined VAN HALEN. But with this band, the chemistry is awesome. It's the best chemistry I've ever experienced, better than the MONTROSE chemistry, better than the VAN HALEN chemistry."

I'll give this record a try...again though, Sammy is the x factor. I have no doubt the other three will bring their A-game. If Sam shows up with his, this could be a great record.

People are reading far too much into the band's name at this point. It does not matter what they name themselves as they are cashing in on legacy.

They're asking for comparisons by having two former VH members and a guitar virtuoso. I'm certainly not denying Satch's abilities, but that tone and groove doesn't sound like anything I've previously heard from him. The tone is very similar to Ed's classic tone as well. I hope it's good, but I also hope it's its own animal. So far, I can't tell.

I don't think it sounds like RWTD...if it sounds like anything maybe it sorta sounds like that one AC/DC song...Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution...speaking strictly of the beginning of the song and the guitar tone and vibe but even that's a stretch. I think it sounds cool and it has me even more interested than before.

I was thinking exactly the same thing! Of course, it helps when you have an actual bass player and not a guitarist merely playing bass on a record. As a guitarist, i'm the first to admit there is a difference. Wouldn't it be great if Mikey finally got a chance to tear it up on this record?

It really does have a bit of a Zeppelin vibe, just Joe's little guitar noodling intro. The drums sound great, the bass sounds phenomenal. Basically, this little piece, IF it is in fact an accurate representation of the entire disc, is EXACTLY what I was hoping this band would be and more.

Up until right now I couldn't of given two shits about "Chickenfoot" (is that 1 word or should it be 2?)......but that little snippet sounded really effin' cool.....I will check this project out now:thumb:

It's not just you-it's obviously not the same exact riff, but it's in the neighborhood. And the bassline sounds eerily familiar too- it's even in the same key, if I'm not mistaken.

I think they did it as a joke, and I think it's funny.

Joe seems to be such a well grounded human being that he really probably does not feel the need to prove anything to anyone. Great to hear a simple badass riff, rather than a guy who is trying to live up to the title of Guitar hero. Sounds like Joe is gonna play for the song, hope this is the case.

What has annoyed me about Ed over the past decade, even Balance is that it sounded like Ed was trying to live up to his reputation and things just got more and more complicated in the structure of the songs and his playing.

I smell what you're steppin in my friend. It's a feeling I haven't had since right before Balance came out. It's looking forward to some quality fist pumping balls out Rock and Roll.

I've never been a Satch fan so to speak, but I do think he's an amazing guitarist and I have lots of respect for the guy.

There will never be another like EVH, I will always love the music he gave us. However, "Right Now" I can't wait for this CD to come out!

Yeah, it does... but it's much easier to play...

1. it's in half-step down tuning
2. it's got a open E string bass pedal just like RWTD
3. the timing and groove repetition is very similar
4. it's played in the same area of the guitar neck

I just transcribed it...

Timing: 4 & .... 2.... 3 & 4 &
Chords: F#5 G5 .... G5 .... F#5 G5 F#5 E5
Notes: all 5th chords played on 4th and 5th strings (with roots on the 5th string obviously)

It may have that "something," but it does not have a Van Halen.

Absolutely. While I have immense respect for Satch as a musician and guitarist, I haven't been a big fan of his instrumental stuff because the songs seemed - IMO - to be just an excuse for him to shred and sounded the same to me after a while. But I checked out his latest, Professor Satchafunkulis (spelling?), because he said he was playing more for the songs and damned if that wasn't the cae! I really like that disc. So moving to a band w/vocals format seems like a logical progression. I'm anxious to see how his playing fits that format.

- it has the same E-Pedal bass effect
- it's at the same tempo
- it has the same basic drumbeat figure
- it has similar guitar timing... the riff starts with 2 eighth notes, rests a bit, and then resolves with 4 eighth notes... this one starts on the upbeat 4, while Devil starts on the downbeat 1
- it's in the same 1/2 step dropped tuning
- it's in the same key
- the riff is played in the same guitar neck territory to give a similar sonic tonality

Cool Riff, but I hope Sammy gets his vocal/melodic chops back to do the music justice... his recent solo record was laughable IMO.

I've just come to a realisation here...

The name Chickenfoot has bothered me right from the off, but now I can hear some music and see that one page site, it doesn't so much.

It was the same when i heard the names Guns n' Roses or Duran Duran or It Bites or MR Mister. As abstracts, most band names are borderline ridiculous. Put them in a context and suddenly the name isn't what you read, but what it represents.

Seems like Chickenfoot is going to represent something quite rocking too.

Personally I am glad it doesn't appear they are going with Echo Vault. It sounds too much like the whole Rockstar Supernova thing.

I'm not what anyone would accuse of being a huge Hagar fan but I'm really behind this project and I wish it nothing but the best. If 52 seconds is anything to go by, I think this could really cool...perhaps one of the better rock releases of the last several years.

As for the whole Running with the Devil conflict...I didn't think of it when I heard it the first time. After hearing all the comments saying it sounds like it, well...i guess I can hear something similar but it's not like they nipped the riff or anything like that.

What I really don't get is the idea that hearing RWTD somehow means someone is anti-hagar or whatever...maybe I'm not reading the posts correctly or something but the whole it does/it doesn't bitter feud seems odd...but hey, if there's a not a bitter feud of some sort going on in at least 4 threads, I'd begin to worry! :D

Like I said in a previous post, I am a huge Satch fan. I have every Satch CD from "Not of This Earth" onward, and I will buy (or download) this effort from Satch as well. Not trying to slam this CD or in anyway show hate toward Sam and Mike, just making some comments on the sample they put forth.

Also, yesterday both Flea and Stewart denied that there will even be a faces reunion this year, let alone that Flea would play with them. Seems a reporter claims to have been told that by Ronnie Wood. Sounds like either the reporter is lying or Ronnie is of the wagon yet again. I certianly hope it the former.

The only thing those two songs have in common are that Mikey was involved with both. It sounds more like Sammy mumbling and more crappy lyrics to follow like the last few projects he's done.

What are you talkin' about? There's the magnificent masterpiece of VH III. There's no less than six Sam solo LPs, two Dave solo LPs, and three Van Hagar tracks. Tons of pickins. :)

It does not sound like Runnin' With The Devil. Eddie rips off his own riffs more than this is a rip off of RWTD. Satch doesn't need to rip off anyone, he is a genius on his instrument.

Satch is not trying to copy Ed's tone.

I could go on, but it isn't worth it.

Van Squalen is correct in the fact that I do not have a doubt in my mind that this will be the best release by anyone in Van Halen since Balance. There is an incredible amount of talent in that band AND they seem to truly enjoy one another's company.

I think it is unfortunate that this is probably only a one-off thing due to Chad's obligations to the RHCP, but one great album and supporting tour is probably more than we are going to get out of the current lineup of Van Halen.

Not trying to be a pain in the ass, but can't we just enjoy the fact that their is some new music coming out by an incredibly talented band instead of nit picking 0:52 of it before it even comes out?

Marching to Mars is a great album. And Exit Elvis has quite a few good songs on it. This song probably being the best of them.

I actually find the picture on the site looks more like the pics from BOBW, like the style and everything. But unlike Roth's horseshit, this IS a new band, and our own VH-oriented consciousness is going to make us all think at times that we hear similarities and copies of things.

I wasnt trying to contribute to the negative road this thread seems to have taken. I personally have nothing to add on the whole RWTD thing. It's fuckin silly, really.

No, rather when I looked at the pics on the Chickenfoot page I was reminded of a multitude of photos from different CD's/DVD's (FUCK and Sammy's Birthday Bash DVD to name a couple). Just noting a "hey wow" kinda thing.
