I've got a '74 MKII 50 watt head that I've been using Groove Tube EL34's and Ruby Tube 12ax7's in for a few years and love the sound. My cab still has the original Celestion greenbacks in it, so that helps too. The older Marshall cabs are so much heavier than the new ones (lots of thick wood in the construction ), which seems to help my tone a lot.

thanks wolfman....i.am using 74 4x12 25 watt celestions with the sand colored speaker caps dated4-24-74 thanks to my marshall book.....81 mkII JCM 800 SINGLE CHANNEL HEAD plus my old tremolux64 head with soldano 2x12 and bogner2x12 they both have 30 watt celestions....just not happy with head....more than likely will sell..and buy soldano 50 xl ,bogner or top hat ...thanks woody
Wolfman, you're not kidding about the older cabs being heavier. I'm using a 68 with 25 watt green backs, and it's like moving a small fridge. My head's a 75 mk II, but it's specially modded. I've tried it through diff. cabs, and the old ones sound best.

Tribb I think the secret is they had some magic fairy dust that they sprinkled in those old cabs. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

Brown, yea that's what the cabinet fairy told me...http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif
Actually, a friend of mine who's a woodworker told me they used a heavier grade of plywood than is used today.

http://www.van-halen.com/main3.html did you guys read this article? Peavey talks a little about cab construction, nothing earth shattering, but interesting.
