Like you, I am always looking for something new music-wise to inspire me (I'm a guitar player)... Have you ever heard of a band called Dada? They had a great debut album, "Puzzle" in 1992; not too new now, but it is a great CD with wonderful vocal harmonies and excellent musicianship. Some keyboards, but mostly a guitar band. I would describe them as sort of alternative, but much more sophisticated than, say, the Gin Blossoms or Toad. Most of their work since that album was not as good, but this CD is great from front to back. If you see it in the cheapie or used bin, check it out... And if you do (or have), let me know what you think!

My school did the play "Fame" and my character was Bruno, this little introvert Italian kid who lives in New York and plays a synthesizer! But I couldn't be a guy, so we changed the part to Brunella. Puzzle was among my favorite albums of the 90's..."Dim", "Dizz Knee Land", "Posters", all excellent tunes with some of the best two man harmonies ever. Then they released "American Highway Flower" which was pretty good, though no "Puzzle".

Last year, I stumbled across their last release, in '98, which is self-titled. I would recommend that, as well. I don't even know if they're still together.

It's funny you should also mention the Gin Blossoms and Toad, two bands that I like alot, as well, particularly for their songwriting.

BTW, Lead Synth...the "goat balls" comment is, ummmm, aggressive? (!!!)

Cool post - I also like(d)the Gin Blossoms and Toad; my comment about Dada being more sophisticated was not a slam at either of those two bands at all, but the guys in Dada are just exceptional musicians, as you know...

I had a unique chance to see them at the height of their popularity (while Puzzle was still hot). They were to open for the Gin Blossoms (who were also hot at the time)at the Boathouse in Norfolk, Va., but the Gin Blossoms were a no-show. So they got Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds (remember them? I thought so http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif ), but even they were a no-show. So Dada came out, and played a two and a half hour show. They played all of Puzzle, and did some really cool covers. One that stands out was an awesome version of the Mama's and the Papa's "California Dreamin". Their harmonies were incredible. One of the very best shows I've ever seen, without a doubt!

I play a LOT of VH keyboard songs, not note-for-note, but good enough for me, you know? If I don't know a part I make up stuff to fill it in. I don't use sheet music, and if I can't hear the keyboard part I just play the guitar part or whatever! http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif

I can do Jump (not the whole keyboard solo!), I'll Wait, Dreams, Love Walks In, When It's Love, Right Now (but not like Eddie!), Can't Stop Lovin' You (i just play it on a piano instead of a guitar), and Not Enough. I can do a little bit of Feels So Good, and Once. I do little bits of all kinds of songs: the intro to "5150" is my favorite, and the beginning of Unchained (yes you can play that on a keyboard!), some of 316, the chorus of The Dream Is Over, intro of ATBL....on the song 1984 I have to use music!

My music is inspired some by "Eddie's keyboard stuff" but it's really inspired by VH as a whole. My MP3s are up at http://maya.iuma.com or http://www.vhvault.com/1989/main.html and you can download whatever you want, that's what they're they're for!

Yeah, I know SwissHalen plays keys, he's probably a lot better than me though!

Hey Eddie_I, thanx for the compliment! Hey Lead Synth, you really have to check out Eddie_I's guitar playing, he plays very well. My favorite vh-tune to play on the keyboard is Right Now. It's quite a good training for the fingers as well, 'cause you get really tired when you play it for a long time! We even played some vh-tunes with our band. We used to play Jump (I love the synth solo part YUNKKKKKKKKK) but we really screwed it up at a concert (I even have it on tape, but I'll keep it like a treasure :)). And we played Eagles Fly (with me on lead vocals...). Hey Lead Synth, I think your playing is great, as is your songwriting.

Last year I recorded a song that had guitar, drums, bass, and like three layers of keyboards...(not real drums or guitar or bass, just sounds that are in my keyboard.) I played all the parts myself. I swear I worked on it 24/7, for WEEKS, until I got it right.

It basically a sequence... a MIDI file if you will...of a song I wrote...only I didn't a computer to make it, just a keyboard. None of this fancy software that writes out the notes for you. I went by ear! I just recorded tracks over tracks and if I messed one thing up I did it over.

I recorded it a year ago without any vocals and sent it to someone. The whole thing was saved as a MIDI file in my keyboard, and suddenly the keyboard's memory got wiped. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/cry.gif
So how stupid was I?!??! I didn't have a good copy of it... I had ONE shitty copy with crap vocals on it already, on a TAPE so I couldn't record over. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/frown.gif I coulda cried...

There's no way I can record all those layers again the way I had it. What I've gotta do, is try to find the guy I sent it to and pray he's still got that tape I sent him, and try to get it back.

Btw ... I really like to record my stuff , all the stuff that passed on my mind ! Sometimes I wake up in the night with a song in my mind and I run recordin it with the voice ! It sounds strange , but I play the riff stuff with the voice , and than during the day I translate in guitar stuff !
Btw ... recording in studio is a pain : i have done recordings repeating stuff for 30 times before they get a little bit good ! ... You know : I watch the guys in the studio and I say : " May I repeat the song ? " ... and they look to me saying " Ohhh hell , you done it well " !
This is the case when I was recording eruption ... i repeat the song about 15 times before getting something that I could like ! ... It never be perfect , but ... just try to be ! ...
I'm not so good in guitar like homeunit or Brett , but I try to do my best ! ... Just now I'm covering a Brett song that I really like , full of power ! ...

I wish I could record in a real studio! The studio atmosphere sounds really nice, like you say. Right now, my little "5150" is just the synthesizer, the computer, the amp, a tape deck, a microphone, and a million cords going every which way! I wish I had a sound-proof room, so if I woke up at midnight and felt like I had to play...I could play and not wake anyone up!

Here's some trivia for you. The original name of HIM was His Infernal Majesty (referring to Ville Valo's (the singer) "luck" with women!).

Both songs are from their second album Razorblade Romance. IMO the first album was better. Join Me and Right Here In My Arms are both released as singles in Europe. I've heard that both albums are going to be released in the States this fall.

I talked with the guy who is the head of the Entertainment Committee for the County Fair here in Franklin County, Iowa.

He showed me a list of quotes from all the performers they could possibly have at the fair someday. This year they have Three Dog Night (big whoop.) http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Three Dog Night has a hilarious contract, though. You're supposed to have all these special kinds of food and drink backstage. It reminded me of VH and the brown M&M's!

Anyway, it was a pretty impressive list of performers, although there were several washed up bands, or groups I've never heard of in my life, on there.

I didn't expect VH to be on the list and they weren't. Sammy wasn't either. But DLR was. DLR will perform for $30,000.

Kind of blew my mind. "Is Dave back with Van Halen, or will he be playing at the county fair next year for $30,000???"

Well, I wrote about it on my site, but here's the short version!

When I was 16, I wandered into a used CD store and found Balance. It was a store where they let you listen before you buy, and I did and it completely blew me away. Just floored me. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/eek.gif

I wasn't even into rock music at the time. I didn't know anything about music! http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/redface.gif

I had heard the name "Van Halen" before and of course I had heard some of their songs, but I never knew anything about the band.

I didn't know who was who in the pictures of the Balance liner notes, or ANYTHING. I knew where to go, though. I went to the Internet and typed in "van halen" and hit Search. From then on, my life was never the same!

I became a fanatic. I turned the radio to a rock station (something I never did before!) and I'd put a blank tape in the tape deck. I would sit by the radio just listening for that AWESOME, instantly-recognizable guitar sound. When I heard it I would hit "record."

I still have the tape. It has little bits and pieces from other bands on there! Like I was saying "Oh, it sounds like Van Halen! Wait, no it's not, it's...Motley Crue." (Ha!) http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

So every song I heard, I got more and more into them. I collected the CD's one by one, and loved them all. I'm going to be a fan forever. I love this band with all my heart!

I have a guy friend whose mother got remarried recently. His mom and her new husband went to Italy for 9 days on their honeymoon and got back a few days ago.
Anyway, my guy friend came over to my house wearing the shirt that his mom brought back from Italy for him. It said "Italia" and it had this Leonardo da Vinci drawing on it.

So I'm looking at his new shirt and suddenly I thought, it's the same design as on the Balance CD! Everyone says that the Balance tour lacked energy. Well, I wasn't at the Balance tour, but I imagine what they mean is that Ed wasn't running around like crazy because his hip was in pain. Well, I have Balance bootlegs and I have other boots from the Sam era. I don't know if it's because he wasn't running around as much so he could lose himself in the music more, but Eddie sounds better on the Balance tour boots, IMHO. So creative.

I was at work tonight, well, really LAST night, you know, a few hours ago...anyhow...here's a true story.

I work in a little mom-and-pop restaurant in a small town where everyone knows everyone. Most of our customers are people we know by name. Well, the phone rings, someone else picks it up and it's a guy calling in an order. 4 tenderloins, 4 cheeseburgers, 4 orders of onion rings, and 3 large chocolate milkshakes, to go! At 10:45 at night!!!

I'm like "Who the heck was that?

The one who answered the phone goes "He said his name was David Roth, something like that."

Can you imagine, I just about spilled one of the 3 milkshakes!!!

I wanted to kill him. I felt like saying, "You just CAN'T order 4 tenderloins, 4 cheeseburgers, 4 orders of onion rings, and 3 large chocolate milkshakes, to go! That's too much like something Van Halen would do! It's a good thing you didn't order a glazed donut!"

I don't know if I can take much more of this!

Btw , Here's a short story from my diares of rock star !
It was about 1989 and i was playing in a band where my only space was playing some tunes with symply chords ! ... One night we were playing in a small pub , full of people ! We start to play ! I was playing good because I didn't hear any mistakes come out from my old Fender amp ! I was thinking ... Hey Marco , you're playing so damn good , what's happening to you !

Yeah, DIF, I'm a graduate student there. I hope we have a better team this year, but I'd rather have a better coach, 'cause Coach Davie is 3/4 the problem. Can you believe we had the most losses in 26 years last year?!?! The team underachieved, and there were at least 4 games where coaching cost us a win.

As for Pearl Harbor... my grandfather was on the USS Oglala, a minelayer that was tied up next to the Helena, a cruiser. The story goes that the night before, my grandfather's crew was ordered to remove 500 mines from their ship, which raised the keel about 15 feet--basically the ship floats higher in the water with less stuff on board. Anyhow, when the Japanese attacked, they had a straight shot at his ship since it was tied up to the Helena on one side, and was facing the Arizona on the other.

Well, this one plane launches a torpedo at the Oglala, but because it was riding higher in the water than the night before, the torpedo went right under it, and hit the Helena instead. The Oglala then capsized. The running joke was that it sunk "from fright!" haha My grandfather said that if they hadn't unloaded those mines, he'd be dead, along with everyone on the Oglala and Helena. Amazing....

I've got to give you an, "Amen," on Davie being the big problem. He's a good defensive coordinator, but damn... Last year was embarrassing.

Davie's clock management sucks. He blew time-outs at the worst times of the game or he didn't use them when he should have. I think clock management lost at LEAST 2 games last year.

And my grandfather served in WW2, but he was stationed in Jacksonville Florida at a Japanese internment camp. He was stationed there because he was 36 when he was drafted.

One time he was ordered by a high-up official to drive him to another part of the base. My grandfather couldn't drive and told the commanding officer. The officer asked, "Are you disobeying a direct order?" So after explaining over and over that he really couldn't drive, my grandfather said, "Fine, let's go."

I actually got interviewed on NBC for the home game against Kansas, don't know if it was national, but local news carried it, and they asked me about the distractions with the NCAA investigation, and how well they would do that year (of course, I said we'd win the championship!). Then three weeks later, I think it was the Michigan State game, I got on local news again! I've got both interviews on tape... The MBA students evidently sit right next to the tunnel where all the media people come through. It was alot of fun being at the game, the energy of 82,000 screaming fans is incredible. Highly recommend getting to see at least one game live if you haven't already.

BTW, Davie signed FOUR frickin' quarterbacks! So Arnaz Battle is highly doubtful for the starting spot. Although two of the QBs signed could play other positions, what we need more than receivers are CORNERBACKS! I can't remember a season where we gave up more 20+ yard passing plays, and alot of them for touchdowns too!

Last night COULD NOT get to sleep thinking about what might be up on the official site when I got up. I wore my For UCK shirt to bed and lay there listening to the last 5 tracks of Balance in wide-eyed anticipation. "Is today the day???" I kept thinking. It got to be about 3:00. But, knowing I had to be awake at 7:00, I finally said to myself "I have to get some sleep for Eddie, Alex, and Michael" and went to sleep thinking to myself "I'm the number one fan...I'm the number one fan....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...."

And now, after everything, I get on the internet and pull up van-halen.com and I get a lot of pretty graphics and "stay tuned for much, much more."

You can bet I'm going to.

But I'm disappointed.

Oh yeah, Wes, my friends are all wired. Most of them have nicer computer stuff than I do.

I make do with what I have. Unfortunately, the computer I use isn't mine, it belongs to the rents, and I need to find the money to buy one in the fall for college.

The keyboard I record on, and my amp...they aren't mine either, they belong to my old high school, and I have to return the stuff in August.

That's going to be terriffically hard to do, but I applied to get into a certain dorm at Northwestern that is home to the Performing Arts Residential College, and it actually has both a digital and an analog recording studio, a Kurzweil synth, 7 pianos, and all kinds of stuff.

I had to write an essay to apply, and I wrote that if I got to live there, none of their 7 pianos would ever need dusting http://64.176.3.141/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

If you've ever been to the NWU campus, maybe you've seen what they call "The Rock"...it's just a gigantic rock that the students have made a tradition to paint

it gets another coat of paint every couple of days, always at night, and then you have to stay up and guard your creation from anyone else that may want to express themselves
