Well, having a key note to match is always a good idea.

Also, try laying flat on you back with a dictionary or large phone book on your stomach to practice singing with your diaphram and not your throat.

Sometimes it helps to plug one ear to hear internally what you're singing.

Good 'ol Do Re Mi is a sure fire warm up drill. Try different size mouth openings, as well as lip tighness. Always sing in your range.

If you play an instrument, i would recommend singing while practicing. If you're practicing scales, sing the notes as you play them as this will also improve your playing technique. Some people, though, can use all the correct singing technique and still be flat as a board. A good ear is the key.

This thread makes me laugh, and here's why.

I'm a terrible guitar player; I've always wanted to be able to play simple chords and sing over top of them, but alas, I can barely play or sing, much less combine them. So anyway, the other day I was playing the simple three note part of Happy Trails and I decided to try to sing along, which takes a ton of concentration for me. So when I started to sing it was nothing but a total monotone; "happy trails to you, until we meet...". It was ugly, and my wife was laughing her ass off at me.http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

I sing a whole lot...
1. Proper warm up and TONS of practice...
2. Sing within your range...
3. Learn confidence...make big mistakes! Don't be a wuss
4. LISTEN TO EVERYONE AROUND YOU. If they are wincing with each phrase, you need a little more work...*L*
