I have decided to call Dave on behalf of myself and I figured
the rest of us here! I need some help on maybe how I can approach the
Van Halen thing..what questions would you guys like me to ask him?
I feel he will answer the few a questions I ask him. I need to approach him
in the right way though.like I guess touch on the subject that he might be
talking about on the morning I call..And then go into a few VH questions just like a die hard fan...I got through pretty easy this morning and chickend out.
So maybe with a little help from some people I can get the job done..
Let me know what you guys would ask him you got thru..(please no jokes)
Come on when is the last time any of us had the opp to ask Dave a VH question?
Peace Tony

Well all humor (?) aside, I'd ask him what his favorite VH song is, out of all the songs they recorded. What was his best concert memory?

If and when they ever get into RRHOF, would he show up?? Would he care? What is his take on all of that? Would he perform with the guys on stage? What does he think it will take to get them all on one stage again??

I dunno, that's just me and my babbling self wonderin out loud I think. :drunk:

btw - Good luck and let us know how it goes. You should do what Edward did when he called into Frasier's show. :D

Well I hope there's not a limit on how many queries you can make of the Diamond One that he'll actually answer, but good luck.

We'll be expecting your full report as soon as you hang up the phone. :D

That's if you can get through his screener process, and be lucky enough to be among the few who are selected, of course.

If I were you, assuming you do get through to a live person, I wouldn't be talking up how you're gonna ask him about Van Halen. Those sorts of fan calls must be a dime a dozen. You're gonna have to present with something 'different' to make the cut, in all likelihood.

smithjc
02.01.06, 04:56 PM
Gee are they that picky about who he talks to??

There always has to be a middle man to make things difficult (get in the way). :irked:

So it has to be something out of the ordinary then?

Wow. Well good luck anyways TB, hope you make the cut. :thumb:

I'm just assuming, but surely there's a switchboard screener process like all talk shows utilize, and it'd be surprising if they didn't already have some sort of protocol in place to deal with rabid Van Halen fans with 'reunion' and 'what really happened' on their calling itinerary. Otherwise, I've gotta think he'd be talking about that virtually non-stop.

smithjc
02.01.06, 05:04 PM
Yeah that's true isn't it.

Those pesky ol' VH diehards anyways!! :D

Guess we'll find out tomorrow. Sounds like TB's been practicing anyways. :sssh:

Even if you're sneaky, don't be surprised if you're disconnected if you start talking reunion / VH questions. And some radio shows pre-record those sorts of calls just to avoid situations just like that, and since Dave is still getting his feet wet and is apparently avoiding controversial callers....you may want to prepare for the possibility that even if you get to rap with him, they may not air the exchange.

That said, good luck and godspeed. I suspect if you wanted to rap about any of his outer VH ambitions, such as boating down the Amazon, rock climbing, German existentialism, or martial arts, you might have a better chance of on-air rapport.

That's if you can get a word in edgewise, of course. :D

You should start off by saying "short-time listener, long-time fan." ha ha
Oh and tell him Jimmy says 'hi.'

Seriously, since you're calling tomorrow, you have time to put together an outline of some questions for him, the only problem is with Dave you get someone who is so quick-thinking and talking, you really don't know where the topic might go. You might not have an opportunity to speak after the first question.

The important thing is this; once you've segued into your VH question, it HAS to be a good one (since he might only answer one). Make the 1st one count! I would save the 'favorite song' and 'road memories' for later on if you have the chance. Granted, there's a hundred things we'd like to ask him, but try to narrow it down to some really good ones.

Good luck, just trying to offer some suggestions. I'm probably going to have to listen to the replay online afterwards since I don't get the show here.
Remember, you represent all of us Linkers, so carry on swiftly and God speed!

ive tried several times. !st time i got through i told the screener that dave brought up the subject of replacement singers..so i wanna go into the VH story..i was disconnected.
The next time, i said the same thing, but related it to the subject and he said i'll be on shortly..then the phone crapped out..
now i got a new phone and am going to try everyday until he answers all my questions..eventually.
im gonna ask him that america wants to know,,wants him to come clean..why cant they bury the hatchet and save rock again?

but im stubborn and brickheaded..your strategy will probably meet more success before mine..

let us know

I think if you change the topic mid conversation they disconnect ya too. It's happened a few times on some of the recorded shows I've downloaded...some dude starts going blah blah blah reunion, or blah blah blah what happened, then click....dave segues into something else.

We're not gonna get the straight skinny over the airwaves, people. Accept it. We're hardly the first folks who've thought of this plan.

Ask him why in the hell that a man who is supposed to be so smart and well-read can't understand that in order to get the one thing he wants more than anything, which is to be back in Van Halen, he needs to drop the Diamond Dave act when he's hanging around with his former bandmates, and just be the Diamond One onstage?
What's so hard about that? Dude is supposed to be highly intelligent, yet he can't figure that out.

Just act like a normal human being when you're in the studio or in joint interviews, and act like David Lee Roth when you're in front of the crowd onstage.
It's really very simple. We'd have probably had several albums and tours of the original VH if Dave could have just, as we say in the South, "acted like folks" back in 1996.

Ask him if he's at all aware of just how racist the 'Roth Army' is, who by the way boasts on being the #1 Dave fan site online.

Dave is fully aware of the Army and has spoken to several people from there on air. What generally happens is, he has callers to talk about whatever topic they are discussing that day, not just asking question about VH. He obviously refers to VH during music discussions as thats his experience.

Give it a go, Lady Luck might be on your side.. :D

fully aware of the site, yes.

aware of the 'army' of racist mods, don't think so.

Dave's a humanitarian. A so-called 'Army' shouldn't allow any racism like most of their mods do, if they are in fact 'fans', which from my experience, they're not.

Me Wise Magic and Cant Get This Stuff No more were definately great songs and a shining moment in 1996. They were heavy and showed that CVH could still be relevant today. There is only three songs on The Greatest Hits I'll listen to most, those two and Humans Being which is one of Sammy's best songs with the band, heavy and Classic sounding. Edward did a really good lower vocal under Sammy's, but that was Sammy's last song with them for awhile as we know.
I think Dave and the band should try a reunion someday for us. I have been a fan since I was a young kid of 11 years old in 1978 and even if it was only an album and 1 tour. I would even like to see Sammy open up for them and he could sing a couple of songs with them if that's what it would take. Anyway, I'm sure alot of money would be made, but we would get some more great music!

If you get through, and past the screeners I would ask about the 2000 demos, and why Mikey never came out on stage to play with Dave on the Sam and Dave tour...

From what I've read, Mikey did want to go out on stage with Dave during that tour. DLR was quoted as having said "Why do a half ass reunion"? He never did perform with him on the tour that I know of, definately didn't at the show I attended.

You should ask DLR about the songs recorded in 2000. Dave said the hands fell off the clock. One can only imagine.
