View Full Version : Ice Cream Man--Screamin' Jay Hawkins
Anyone ever heard this version? Is it the John Brim tune?
"I put a spell on you" is one of my all-time favorite toons...

I'm sad to say I've never even heard the John Brim version of Ice Cream Man. I've only heard VH's take on the song.

My ol man has this tune on a compilation disc of various 50's artists doing that innocent soda pop malt shake rock and roll. Dave stuck pretty much to the original tune, but with a shitload more swagger and style. Otherwise the tune is your typical oldie sounding pop song from the days when the baby boomers had no idea what a 2 pound banana was. The description inside the cover mentions Van Halen covered it and made it immensely popular. Cool tune overall.

You can make em out, but they are slightly different than Dave's version. I can't remember exactly about the questionable section. Has anyone checked mp3 storehouses for the recording?

Aw reet,I was ackskin 'bout Screamin' Jay Hawkin's version of Ice Cream Man--whether or not it was the same tune as John Brim's.
John Brim's original can be found on Chess Records,"Whose Muddy Shoes." A great album that features Elmore James and Little Walter.
John Brim's Ice Cream Man is classic Chicago blues. What a great tune to cover. You gotta get back to the roots and check out the original.
