View Full Version : Hey Spanish Doc...Maiden Question?
Well after all these years, I think I'm gonna go get a Maiden album. Yes I've never had one. Anyways, what should I get. I only want the Dickinson stuff, screw the other guys. I am leaning towards "Number Of The Beast," but I like "Flight Of Icarus" and my band actually covers it. The funny thing is I've never really heard the song, our singer brought in the live version, played it once for me, so I acually just really know it from us playing it. Comments?

Get "Live After Death". It's got a good overall mixture of their songs.http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif Unless you hate live albums of course.
Yeah I was thinking about that, but I don't want a live album, and "Live After Death" is the "Icarus" our singer played for me. I know they have a "Greatest Hits" album, but it doesn't have "Flight Of Icarus." So that's a possibility, I can live without that one song.

I see that the positive Maiden comments from a vast number of vhlinkers had its effect. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif
Number Of The Beast (1982) has NOTB, Hallowed be thy Name, Run To The Hills, Children of the Damned.
Piece Of Mind (1983) has Flight of Icarus, and The Trooper. That's the album you should buy.
Powerslave (1984) has Powerslave, Aces High.
Largely considered Maiden's best by older Maiden fans.
Somewhere in time (1986) has Wasted Years, Alexander The Great.
7th son of a 7th son (1988) has Evil That Men Do, Can I Play with Madness. Largely considered Maiden's best by hardcore fans.
Basically, there are two compilations: Best Of The Beast (1998) and Ed Hunter (1999). Ed Hunter has 20 songs.
There are a total of 12 studio albums, 2 with PauL DiAnno, 8 with Bruce, 2 with Blaze.
By the way: I think the second album with Dianno (Killers, 1981) is awesome.
Anything else you wanna know?

Thanks a lot Doc, I've always liked some Maiden stuff, just really never got that into them. So I figured, "well there's nothing new out I like, why not try something old?" http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif
So I went to Best Buy at lunch and I was either going to get "Number Of The Beast," "Piece Of Mind," or "Best Of The Beast." Well they didn't have "POM" and on "Best Of The Beast," I knew about 90% of the songs on it, so I figured I'd start there. The only two songs I like that aren't on it that I like are "Iron Maiden" and like I've said a bunch of times, "Flight Of Icarus." I got a funny look from the cashier, I guess a guy in a suit looks odd buying an Iron Maiden CD. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif Oh well.
Listened to it my car on the way back, brings back memories of junior high. Some good stuff! BTW, those early records are mixed like crap, everything sounds muddy to me. I guess it's just that early 80's thing.

Yeah the production kinda sucks for the first few albums.
I live in Montreal, the largest city in Quebec province, Canada. And here we are THE biggest hardcore Iron Maiden fanbase in North America, and this is a statistically proven fact.
So in the biggest HMV record store downtown, there is a HUGE Maiden rack and they carry 3-4 copies of each old album, and some interviews & singles also. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif I'd say it's about two times the size of the Van Halen rack.
So I'm a little bemused that you couldn't find Piece Of Mind, but understand where you're from http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif
By the way, do you also plan buying their latest album? The production on it is absolutely killer, and musically it stands up to their old stuff easily.
About Best Of The Beast:
I have it but haven't listened to it in 2 years. I remember that I hate the song Virus.
Very strange that their namesake song isn't on it: they play it at EVERY concert.

Actually Maiden is still huge is So Cal, I just think the Best Buy I went to was of out it. Best Buy doesn't do a very good job stocking VH either cause they're not the "flavor of the month" anymore either.
People always say VH's early stuff needs to be remastered, but compared to the other heavy metal acts of the early 80's, Maiden, Judas Priest, VH's production quality is top notch.
I might get their new album, but I'd need to hear some of it first, and if it sounds anything like their last album, I think it's called "Virtual XI" or something like that, I won't buy it. The stuff I heard from that was just terrible, makes "VH3" look like "Fair Warning." I am just skipping over the new stuff on that CD I bought, I have no desire to hear that Bayley guy.

Brett,
The new album kicks ass! It is much better than Virtual IX. Bruce is back and in fine form. High points: The Wicker Man, Ghost of the Navigator, Brave New World, The Fallen Angel.
Also, Span Doc, the last album with Bruce before he left the band, 'Fear of the Dark' ain't that bad. I actually think its good. It was a low seller in North America because by 1992, people were uninterested in Maiden because all that other crap came along (Pearl Jam, Nirvana).
High points on that album: Be Quick or Be Dead, Fear of the Dark, From Here to Eternity.

I still wouldn't recommend Fear of the Dark because it's too much an uneven album. Even Bruce and Steve will tell you in agreement today that it's one of their weakest album.
It an uneven album because half of it is great (be quick, title track, afraid to shoot strangers), and half of it is terrible (weekend warrior, apparition, chains of misery).
I wouldn't recomment No Prayer for the Dying either: very bad production, mediocre vocals (Bruce was tired of the air-raid-siren stuff by then) and very few catchy riffs.
This tour they are playing "Sign Of The Cross", from X-Factor. I can't wait to hear that song sung by Bruce Dickinson.

Iron Maiden is a kick ass band, and one of the most under appreciated. On VH1 the List, best Heavy Metal band category, Stephen Pearcy nominated them, everyone booed, then he goes "Well it's not because I like them." I wanted to through my cheeseburger at that looser!

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>You mean the studio version? It's Bruce and it was the title track from the last studio album Bruce did with Maiden before leaving.
Does Blaize sing the live version off of Best Of The Beast Glenn ??
I don't own that album but I just listened to a 30 second clip of it on Amazon. It's hard to tell because it's a very quiet section of the song, but I'd say that's not Bruce.

I'm interested to see what Doc or one of the other Maiden fans has to say about that live version of Fear of the Dark. I checked out a link to a Blaze Bailey site and under his discography it showed the Best of the Beast album but only showed Virus as his contribution. So maybe it is Bruce on that live version.

I'd join if it was more Maiden related, but as it stands, I'm not going to bother.
If I'm not mistaken, even Span Doc thinks the site is unworthy. And he's the ultimate Maiden fan.
I love Maiden and there's so much about them that's worth discussing, but not at that site. If it was properly broken down in forums and was vaguely on topic, I'd join in a second.
Yep, they basically have one Maiden forum, that Main one, and nobody talks about Maiden in there.

There's a live version on either a real dead one or a real live one (probably the latter). Maybe it's that?? I don't have BOTB so I can't compare. But it would be weird since it's Bruce signature tune if they had Blaze singing it
I saw Maiden with Blaze a few years ago, don't remember if they did FOTD but the show was pretty mediocre.

But, to answer Ed6150's question, Bruce DID sing the live version of Fear of The Dark from 'Best of the Beast'. That live cut was taken from "Live at Donnigton, Aug. 22nd, 1992".
Bruce's last performance with Maiden until the reunion last year was in 1993 (you can watch this concert since it is the "Raising Hell" video).
I think we should start a MAIDEN thread right here at Links.

1) Yes the official Maiden BB sucks, and yes there are a lot of immature jerks there who talk about ANYTHING but Maiden.
2) The "Fear of the Dark" on Best of the Beast is from A Real Live /Dead One, (or is it Live at Donnington?) and is sung by Bruce.

I don't frequent IM sites since I don't have any of the band's music, but one doesn't need to be a fan of the band to safely say that the retarded garbage they have over there is a bad representation of what a message board should be about.
You IM fans deserve better. http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif

Down In Flames, have you ever listened to any classic Iron Maiden by any chance? I'm talking of the 80's stuff.

Spanish Doc, I had to edit this post because of the... "honesty" of the pic. LOL http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif
We can't post that kind of stuff, even if it's only an URL to a pic.
I'm not bent out of shape about it, because I know it was only an honest mistake. http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif
As to your question about Maiden, I've never heard any of their stuff, really. I take it that the early 80's albums are their kick ass material. http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/cool.gif

Well I didn't know about that rule that's for sure.
As for Maiden, I suggest you pick up "Best of the Beast"

Doc, it's sort of an unwritten rule I guess. I don't mind people linking to pornography per se, but I don't want to encourage it, it could only get me into trouble at some point down the road. Didn't mean to make it a big deal, it really wasn't.
I suggest either "Best Of The Beast" or even "Live After Death" for a new listener. "Live After Death" has a ton of great Maiden tunes live, excellent quality, some versions better than the album versions, "Flight Of Icarus" for sure is better.

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>I agree, Live After Death is a monster album and it has all of the well known Maiden songs from that era.
Of course, I suggested Live After Death in the second post of this thread.http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/wink.gif

Speaking of this song, "Run To The Hills" is the only video of IM that I've ever seen. That video is a testement to the old saying, "Don't judge a book by it's cover." http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif
That video made me wretch. I think that this vid alone is why I'd never previously given IM the time of day. http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/cry.gif LOL. But after Span Doc, Ed6150, Glenn, and your consistent "thumbs up" posts, I'm willing to give them a fair listen. http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/wink.gif
Thanks for the picks, guys. http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif

As I've said many times before, Run To The Hills is a very generic hard rock song. http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gifhttp://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif
And yeah I agree the video is pure cheese. http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/wink.gif
Hey Brett you want to know something? i'm trying to get somebody in the office to like Iron Maiden (He got me in Classic Van Halen in the first place!!) and I lent him Best of the Beast... he said he copied it but had to cut the last song (Hallowed be thy name). SACRILEGOUS!!! I asked him why didn't you leave off Virus, he said too late, the CD is done. Ghaaahh... http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/eek.gifhttp://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/mad.gif
Hallowed be thy name is the ultimate classic heavy metal song of all time!!!

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>I'd agree, it's quite likely the best song Iron Maiden ever did. The solos are just awesome, especially on the Live After Death version. I particularily like Adrians' solo, but then I usually prefer his solos over Dave Murrays' solos. That song gives you every facet of what makes Iron Maiden great.

You know, I guess I have seen just about all of their videos as my mates and I were huge fans back when I was in primary school in 1984 or so and yes I would agree most of them are crap, check out Number of the Beast. But in saying that I am not so much a video person so don't really care too much - give me the music man!!! I do see the humour in Maidens videos which I guess is their way of not taking themselves too seriously like some metal bands did - fire and brimstone sort of stuff.
Just saw Maiden with Queensryche and Halford on Saturday night in Phoenix. What a great show. They all sounded great. Maiden put on one hell of a show. Interesting to see them with three guitar players. In my opinion, Dickinson hasn't lost a whole lot.

Hell yeah! Dickinson sounds just as great as he did in '82 if not better.

Yeah and I got it way back when that post was made. http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif The only bad thing about "Live After Death" is that you really don't get the total coolness of Bruce Dickinson's three-part harmonies, as you do on the studio albums. Also his voice gets noticeably tired, especially on "Run To The Hills," he sounds very winded. Still a great collection, and these two points are really not big deals at all.

"Hallowed" rules, can't take that song off! That is sacrilege! Dump that Blaze Bayley crap in a second.
Most of those early 80's metal videos were pretty damn cheesy. I happen to love "Run To The Hills" as a song, and if you can get past the imagery of the video, it's a cool tune. "The Trooper" video is pretty tame, and "Flight Of Icarus" isn't that bad either.
DIF - Keep in mind, Maiden sounds NOTHING like VH, so don't expect to hear something along those lines. The closest you'll get to VH, is maybe some stuff on the first couple records with Paul DiAnno on vocals.

Of all the early Maiden songs, Running Free sounds the most VH-inspired to me. It has that classic rock'n'roll & party vibe.

Yep lyrically it reminds me a lot of "Runnin' With The Devil."

The fact that Paul DiAnno wrote the lyrics might have been a factor.

Hey to all Maiden heads,
I STRONGLY suggest you pick up Bruce's last two solo albums if you haven't already done so.
- Accident of Birth (1997)
- The Chemical Wedding (1998)
Both of these feature Adrian Smith on guitars, (who rejoined Maiden with Bruce), and studio wizard / songwriter/ guitarist Roy Z, who produced/co-wrote on the latest Rob Halford solo album.
The albums are basically metal but much more heavy than anything Bruce ever did with Maiden. But it's still classic style anthemic heavy metal. They are basically among my top 10 best metal albums of the 90's.
