View Full Version : Hagar, Satriani, Anthony and Smith Project...Up...and RUNNING!
Posted in Main by mookie5:
Don`t know if this should have been placed in the Mike or Hagar individual forums or even into the non Van Halen forum but in the June edition of Guitar Player mag. (See Slash on the cover and the Satch interview on page 16) Satriani, Hagar, MA and Chad Smith from the Chili`s have been recording. Satch claims to have about an album`s worth in the can. Power trio with a singer style. (whodathunk that would work) I knew it wouldn`t take long for somthing cool like this to occur. Like chocolate and peanut butter or titties and beer some things just make sense. Unless you like say.. peanut butter and beer. In which case I have no idea of what to say so Chef feel free to throw out the bunny with the pancake cover. At any rate, Mods feel free to move this if the logic is errant.
I still feel like there is a missing element in the current carnival of shame and until things improve I suppose the back catalogue is the only option for me. Still it is nice to see that some new and interesting things seem to be on the horizon. I will spend my cash on some new super group swag if and when it sees the light of day. Incidentally, I am hoping to hear the planet us stuff if anyone has links or such. I heard good things about "Vertigo" But never got the change to hear it.
Peace, love and Crabs(the blue variety)

If this ever sees the light of day, my guess is that it will fall under the Hagar Umbrella more than anyone else's.
Time will tell.

What's the reasoning behind this statement? Sammy's a solo act...he's the main guy.... that being said....he is always praising his band (Vic, Mona, David)...ALWAYS.
Whereas guys like Clapton replace members of their solo band like I change m socks. Nothing wrong with that, doesn't mean Clapton is a prick....but Sam is in A BAND!...not....Sammy Hagar and some session players.
Chickenfoot or whatever this project will be called will be the same way. But of course we will see Sammy and Mike out in the fore-front because we are VH fans.

That was broken up by the Van Halen reunion tour.
No, it was not. There were a series of delays just getting together as a band, and once that happened it was derailed by the drummer getting desperately ill. This screwed things up so much that the band only managed a handful of live dates. The initial single the band managed to record was dismissed by the only label interested, so the album was scrapped. Only then did the VH reunion mess occur, taking Anthony and Hagar along (with the rest of us  ) for the ride. Neal Schon resurrected the tracks in the somewhat underwhelming "Soul SirkUS" project.

I dunno about using the word "excited". Interested, perhaps. Look at this realistically, OK? Joe Satriani is a well rounded composer, and has established himself as a guitarist of good repute. More than likely, he can come up with a good riff or two.
Sam Hagar has proven time and again that he is a terrific arbiter of lunk-head guitarist's riffs, turning them into song.
Mike Anthony's rock solid bass playing is a must, yet more importantly his soaring and inspired harmony and backing vocals should be a key part of the equation.
I honestly believe the weak-link in all of this is the choice of the lead-footed drummer from the RHCP, Chad Smith. I dunno where some of you people got the idea that this guy is a somewhat "funky", inspirational drummer. At best, he's a time keeper. Let us hope that he does not over-play and keeps to a solid, sympathetic playing style.
Whatever. Let's hope for the best...if this project in fact does see the light of day. :thumb:

Hagar said he would bring us Eddie Van Halen in 2004 - and he made good on it (albeit somewhat of a rough ride). Last year he said he would be going on tour with a "superstar guitarist". Looks like he's making good on his word again. This simply confirms the rumors that it was Satch. This should kick some major ass!!!

I'm not sure I understand your criticism of Chad. What exactly are you accusing him of being? He's certainly a good drummer. No question. And he's never been a flashy drummer on record for the RHCP. In concert he takes a bit more liberty with his parts and I think it's more exciting that way.
New music from a group of GOOD musicians who seem to be doing it for the fun of it... I hope this project happens. I think it has the makings to be much more interesting than just a solo album from one of the members.

A) I will believe it when I have the CD in my hands (or more likely on my iPod)
B) As previously mentioned by someone else, I am more interested than excited. Sometimes these supergroups never turn out to be as good as we had all hoped, where the sum of the parts is unfortunately greater than the whole.
C) But if it comes out at least they are doing something NEW. Hint, wink, wink Van Halen.

I think the work ethic comment from Ed was a reference to Sam's work ethic in Van Halen, not his work ethic as a solo artist or tequila salesman. And a reference supported by a few others within the VH camp at the time, by the way....

I really doubt sales will depend on the name; 99% of the people going will be people like us who know exactly what we're in for. Making sure people know who's in the lineup is the only way to gain them fans.
They should call it Satriani-Hagar I think, nice simple name. If I'm honest, I imagine they'll have the lion's share of creative involvement, the biggest egos to stoke (though neither seems to have much ego, I imagine Anthony's is on a low with him opening for Sammy and being kicked out of VH, while Chad Smith is just not quite as "legendary" as the other 3 despite higher record sales), the most experience, and are the most famous.
Plus calling it S-H would get the important names on the cover and draw people in.

I think it's a cool project, but I don't see it lasting. These guys are all stars in there own right w/ plenty of $$ & not alot to prove...
When Sam joined VH in 86, there was alot @ stake for all involved & they were hungry as hell. 5150 (the CD) was a great reflection of that desire
These guys will no doubt sound great, but I wonder about the song quality.
Sam is a great rock singer, but his lyrics just leave me flat. So, I'll sit back & hope for the best. Back when Roth was in limbo, I always wondered if Satch might be able to be a good fit for him?? Probably not...

Title is EVERYTHING. Doesn't matter what kind of media. Movies, television, literature, music, even names of actors and musicians. The jacket's gotta sell the content. This is why Clay become Ali, why Jon Bongiovi became Jon Bon Jovi, why Thomas Mapother became Tom Cruise, why Gordon Sumner became Sting....you get the point.
Van Halen wouldn't have moved nearly as many units as it has if they'd stayed with Rat Salad or Mammoth.
A catchy name with pop culture cool factor, is tantamount to attracting the ever-fickle, short attention-spanned consumer. It doesn't have to incorporate the names involved...look at Velvet Revolver, or the Traveling Wilburys....catchy names with deeper talents. Conversely, presuming they'd released new tunes, which they didn't, The Other Half would not have been a good moniker under which to release an album. Even VH 3 probably suffered from a lack of creativity in album title, though not much was gonna help that pile of shit. ;)

Donno, dude. Satch's pretty tight live. If these guys do get out, it could do some serious damage. I'll wait till i hear some tunage. It does have great potential.
No way I'd be excited about this... given historical trends maybe 1-2 songs come out of these type of collaborations that are decent/good. Never any chart topping smash hits.
Musically the Satch and MA element holds an interest to me.
Given Hagar's song writing the last 10 years I don't have any high interest/expectations... frankly I'd expect most of the crap to be more mediocre, meathead, tequila marinated backwash...

i was redaing the latest issue of classic rock yesterday and satch was saying that the album is still in the writing/demo phase but they want to release something in the near future...so expect a rush job with typical cheesey lyrics from hagar...they are still going with chickenfoot which i think is silly but then again who cares what i think.
im intrigued by this project but not exited and personaly i dont think its gonna light a fire under vh's ass to release new stuff...they will when/if they want to, chickenfoot is never going to be a major threat to the van halen legacy...they do that themselves.

LOL! I've always said this about guys like satch and eric johnson and even steve vai. i mean, take slash for instance....he is 1/10th the guitar player these guys are but he most definitely gets 1000x more pussy thrown his way just because of that one riff, "sweet twat of mine" or whatever it's called.
guys like vai, satch, ej, etc. they're supermusicians. they can wake up out of a dead sleep at 4am and play like they've been awake for 5 hours, ya know?
Guys like slash are rock stars. they have no idea what they played 5 minutes ago because they're constantly tripping over all the vagina that's been thrown at them.
I've always wanted to compile a list of Rock Star Guitarists vs. Musician Guitarists. I guess part of the criteria would be something like: A Rock star guitarist usually claims to not know what he is playing...ie: scales, modes, etc., they have spent time in rehab or jail, they dated/married an actress or super-model, they curse a lot, they've written some of the best riffs in rock and they claim that they always play from the heart and what feels right.
On the other hand, Musician guitarists are the guys who can talk endlessly about the evocotivness of the Hungarian scale, they feel completely comfortable reading sheet music(no tablature), they never give a bad/sloppy performance on stage, they try desperately to look like rock stars but they speak so well that they give themselves away and they have never been photographed with a drink in their hand.
that said, here's my top 5 Rock star guitarists:

2. SRV
3. Slash
4. Angus Young

I know, I know. Yngwie is on both lists. that's because he's the wild card of the bunch. one day he's acting all rock star like (cursing people out on airplanes, getting arrested for slapping his woman) and the next, he's giving tutorials on the harmonic minor scale in Guitar Center. I guess he's Bi-guitaral? LOL!

i heard satch on the radio yesterday and couldn't believe how well hagar's voice WOULD sound with satch's sound. satch is clean and fast. Hagar is rough and fast. they really would sound great together. I hope they do it.
