According to the 2000 edition of Guiness (sp)book of world records, the record for most number 1 hits on the Mainstream rock charts is (drum roll please) Van Halen with 11.

yeah, i remember a DJ saying that on the radio late last year... he also said that van halen has sold more records in the united states than the rolling stones... "in the united states"...

yeah that fact doesn't really suprise me becuase a lot of the "popular" rock bands had their problems with people. The Beatles were more pop, Zep was too dark and the others were just not cool. But Halen had a song for all, Jump is a great example.
