hey all you guitar slingers. me and my friend were talking other day. i notice one thing that is never mentioned in guitar books etc. they talk about tuneing and effects sometimes, but they never discuss the guage of strings. to me it seems like a incomplete storie with out the guage of strings and brand. maybe im just picky. but i want to know... this does effect the sound,, i know beginners tend to use 9 or 10 guage but i hear about veteran rockers useing thick strings. because they are so use to them. malmstein once said he uses really thick strings. i play guitar and am not out of the learning stage, but im on the verge of playing. decent. only 2 yrs under my belt so if anyone cares to give a littel input on string guage id be apprecitive.. i dont wanna hear anyones attitudes about guage dont matter its in the playing. cause i disagree.. i just want someone to be cool and give some help...... what does eddie use as his most commmon set up of guage. ?????? i have a gibson useing the thinner 10 guage

Ed uses 9-42's on his wolfgangs now, and used to use 9-40's on his EBMM EVH's in the past, while someone like Stevie Ray used a much heavier gauge to suit his playing style.
If you asked 100 different guitarists your question, you'd probably get 100 different answers, so why not experiment and figure it out for yourself.

Yeah, I read that in an interview with Dweezil Zappa. I'm still baffled that he can get such a thick sound from 9 guage strings. I guess when you design your own gear, anything is possible
