View Full Version : EXTREME vs. METALLICA!!!

Who do you like better Extreme or Metallica? I like Extreme better. I think Metallica is overated and Extreme is underated.

Vocals: Gary Cherone vs James Hetfield,
GARY'S A WAAAY BETTER SINGER!!! Even Nuno can sing better than Hetfield.

Guitars: Nuno vs. Kirk Hammett/Hetfield,
Nuno is better than both of them combined.

Bass: Pat Badger vs. Jason Newstead,
I like Badger better.

Drums: Paul Geary vs. Lars Ulrich,
I have to admit Lars is better.

Harmonies: Extreme vs. Metallica,
Metallica's harmonies are awful!
Extreme has great harmonies.http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/cool.gif

Extreme wins 4-1. Extreme is a better band!!!

You can't really compare them. Extreme is funky metal and Metallica are the kings of metal. I also would not have compared Paul Geary to Lars because Lars is more like Extreme's second drummer Mike Mangini who is on tour with Stevie Vai. I am a very big Extreme fan though....in fact,I am listening to "Cupids Dead"

Metallica, but only because I'm more familiar with them. I did check out some pretty cool Extreme stuff a while back, and was impressed. Gary fits much better in Extreme than VH.

Gotta say Metallica, no contest. If Extreme is so much better, where are they now?

I'm definately thinking about getting all those Extreme albums that I missed along the way. For now though, I have to go with Metallica on this one. Not a bash of Extreme, I'm just much more familiar with Metallica.

uh, i'd have to say metallica because i'm more familiar with them. however, i have a beef with yankee rose saying that nuno is a better player than kirk hammet. i haven't heard very much of nuno's playing, but kirk hammet is amazing. this of course is old metallica from the 80's. i listened to "one" yesterday from and justice for all, and i don't think anyone can say kirk hammet doesn't have talent, that solo kicks ass. i can't comare him to nuno, but he's pretty damn good!!!

Kirk needs lessons from Nuno. Nuno kicks his ass. Gary can sing with Extreme,James can't sing period. Newstead is pretty cool and Lars just fucking rocks(or used to).Metallica of the 90's is worthless crap but Metallica of the 80's is awesome.I'll still give the nod to Extreme.

Laner- Kirk Hammet could not even be Nuno's guitar tech! Nuno could take James and Kirk in every way possible with the guitar. In fact, Nuno can even sing better then James too. Kirk is not in Nuno's league!

I agree that Gary is better then James, Pat is better then Jason, and Lars better then Paul. If you were adding up the score by each individual musician, Extreme would certainly win . . .but there is something a lot more then that!

INNOVATION! Metallica created their own sound and their own cult following without the success of video and singles. They paved the way for a new brand of Rock music just like Van Halen did nearly a decade before them. The thing with Extreme was they were not innovative really. They were a mutation of Van Halen's sound and Queen's harmonies, rolled in to the hair band genre. I think that is what separated their staying power and commercial success from Metallica's.

I didn't like Gary in VH, but ANYTHING is better than hearing former speed metaller hetfield sing sappy country ballads.

Metallica Are waaayyy overrated. Iron Maiden are THE definite Metal Act of the eighties, NO CONTEST. Anybody who disagree should first give a listen to their rocking new song, The Wicker Man.

Brett

Gee what's with all the Metallica bashing all of a sudden? Geez, from 1983-1990 they were an innovative, tight, incredible band that basically invented "thrash metal." Don't take that away from them. I never liked Iron Maiden in the 80's, I kinda thought they were silly, I was one of the few metalheads I guess who didn't like 'em. The funny thing is that my band does a cover of Maiden's "Flight Of Icarus" and I've only heard the song twice in my entire life. I don' t even know what the solo sounds like, so I just wing it everytime. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif

I think Metallica's Garage Days double cd that they put out recently is a big insult to their fans, all it is is a bunch of remakes. The released something simular to it in 1987 too,http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/confused.gif what a joke. And people insult Van Halen for Diver Down because it has a couple of remakes on it. I do have the S & M album they put recently and it's cool. Great posts diggyd and Georgie but I think that Extreme is a unique band. Especially Extreme 3. Nuno's awesome!

SwollenPrincess
04.05.00, 04:44 AM
I never understood why Extreme is labeled a hair band, they only had one album in the 80's and it was 1989. They were probably the best 90's band...besides Van Halen every year.

laner
04.05.00, 12:40 PM
georgie, i will do some homework on nuno's stuff. i still think kirk hammett is amazing, though.
what do you guys think of cliff burton's stuff with metallica before he died? he's definitely better than newsted, but i can't compare them to extreme, because i don't know enough about them.

Chagoth
04.05.00, 12:49 PM
SwollenPrincess: Extreme was many things, including hair metal. Keep in mind that hair metal had more to do with style and sound than year or look. Extreme also incorporated funk metal, art rock/progressive rock and plain 'ol hard rock into their sound as well.

I know it is difficult for some Metallica fans to remain objective (especially the ones uhappy with Metallica's current direction) but James Hetfield is a better singer now than what he was in the '80s. In the '80s, Hetfield was basically a screamer and a shouter -- he wasn't singing. Now, he sings. Give the guy at least some credit. But you like what you like -- just try to be objective. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif

As far as the Hammett vs Bettencourt debate. I personally believe that Bettencourt is a better guitarist when you compare technique. However, there is more to a guitarist than technique. There is also creativity and songwriting ability. These are both very subjective parts of a what makes a great guitarist so if you think Hammett is better, then he is.

POJO_Risin

It's like comparing apples to oranges....but if you put a gun to my head....Metallica would be it for me. It just depends on the mood. Let me put it to you this way: very rarely do I just slap in some Extreme. Metallica makes it in now and then, for a change of pace from Van Halen. But I don't hate either band....each has their merits.

This comment is coming for someone who REALLY knows Heavy Metal:

Metallica have not been Metal since 1996.

They are NOT the Kings of Metal.

They are hard rock now. They have completely denied their roots. They have said numerous times that they don't care about their old fans anymore. Some of their REAL fans from the eighties are those who created the finest metal bands of the 90's. Death/Control Denied, Iced Earth...

Iron Maiden and Iced Earth are MUCH better band than Metallica at this very moment. I won't try to argue with you using details, because it's pointless and english is not my native tongue and I'm not articulate enough. Simply put, compare Iced Earth latest album Something Wicked This Way Comes with Metallica's crap of the nineties. And tell me which one is better. I bet that none of you has ever heard any Iced Earth. Well, they represent what is best of Iron Maiden and old Metallica merged together.

Sorry, but I've been listening to metal for a long time, overground and underground bands, those who never get noticed, those who go for mainstream etc.. and trust me, Metallica are NOT metal anymore. Lars even said it.

I will not say they suck, as some of them may like them on this BB. But I'll say this: they have COMPLETELY betrayed the metal scene, by their comments, attitude, imagery, and musical direction.

By the way: my current opinion is currently pretty much the same as all hardcore metalheads that I know. Including most good metal bands.

Better metal bands than Metallica? Plenty of em. Iron Maiden, Pantera, Iced Earth, Control Denied, Blind Guardian, In Flames, Nevermore... list goes on.

As for Spanish, VH isn't even his favorite band! All he talks about is Iron Maiden. A band I don't like, but I don't post they suck on every thread he has on them, like he does with bands he doesn't like. Look at his favorite albums of the 90's.

You're wrong. Let me clarify some things.

As a matter of fact, I own every Van Halen record up to and including 5150, plus Best of VOL1. And I also own EVERY David Lee Roth solo record, including the Best Of.

I also own every Metallica record up to and including Load. The reason I constantly trash Metallica is because as an old-school fan I felt betrayed (rightly so) and for all the things that Lars said about metal & old school fans since 1996... not even counting the Napster case. And I thrash Extreme because in 1992 I remember being CONSTANTLY annoyed with their cheese ballads on the school radio in my teenage years.

But you're right that I did not mention any Van Halen or David Lee Roth record on my 10 favorite records from the 90's. DLR Band and ALAE came close to making it, but they didn't, simply because the other 10 I mentioned were far better records. And if you look again, I think I did not even mention an Iron Maiden record on that list. Yes I'm an Iron Maiden fan but I'm honest enough to admit that most of the stuff they did in the 90's was crap. I did mention Bruce Dickinson solo records however. I named mostly stuff from emerging underground metal bands... bands that weren't big in the 80's basically. I have over 230 CDs, that makes for a whole lot of choice.

I'm on this forum because I'm first and foremost a CLASSIC Van Halen fan. I wouldn't even be here if there would have been no possibility of DLR returning. I'm no fan of Van Halen if DLR doesn't sing.

Is that clearer? Thanks for reading all this anyway.

Live - Metallica shits all over Extreme
Albums - Both bands have great albums
Guitars - I think Nuno's better than Kirk & James
Bass - I think Pat's better than Jason
Drums - Lar$ I guess is better than Paul & Mike. I don't think Paul or Mike give half a shit about Napster though http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif
Vocals - Gary has a killer vocal range, with Halen & Extreme IMO. I think James is a far better frontman though. Gary's stage antics are fucking goofy sometimes.

I don't think you could possibly compare extreme to Metallica. Gary is a much better vocalist than James, If you don't believe me compare, "More Than Words" to "Nothing Else Matters". I'm not going to say that makes Extreme the better band, extreme never achieved the level of fame Metallica recieved during early 90's and they we're even bigger in the 80's with cult based fans.

I've got no problem with you liking Metallica more than Extreme, but at what point did you ever listen to Extreme? You've made it very clear in the past that you'd never even listened to an Extreme album, just the two "ballads". Neither of these songs sounds much like Queen or Van Halen.

Musician-wise: no comparisons, please!
Last Extreme lineup is way better than every Metallica lineup, you all know it. And Mike Mangini outperforms Lars Ullrich before starting to play, c'mon!
Metallica did some great piece of work: Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning were two excellent records, where they displayed some "new" metal stuff, something different from the epic or neoclassical or speed thing. In that way they created their own sound, which took a commercial direction with the Black album, where everyone got to know them thanks to a normal song with a catchy riff (Enter Sandman) and two ballads (The Unforgiven and Nothing Else Matters).
So far, they produced two hard rock meets cliche metal records, Load and Reload, very different from their standard metal, and musician-wise they lowered their standards: no difficult parts to play, boring vocals, Lars'double drumming gone nowhere. And while their live performances were great, now they're ok. Still a lot of attitude on stage, but their difficult parts are now simple parts (read: Lars can't play anymore what he used to).
I agree with Spanish Doctor saying Iron Maiden were more important to the metal scene; they set a standard for epics, instrumental things and musician-wise that bands like Metallica will never meet; their sound is still great, and they sound better than ever with their new record; live they kick ass, and I'm not a great fan of theirs. But I recognize their importance. In addition, they never sold-out...
Extreme: their huge hits were good, Hole Hearted, More than Words (a ballad, but it seems to be more and more criticized than Nothing Else Matters, even though the vocal harmonies are unequaled...), Rest in Peace, Get the Funk Out... We're talkin'bout funky meets metal, as FORD says Queen meets VH (that's always been Gary's dream), but Nuno abilities in the songwriting field and arrangements were great. Unfortunately, my fav Extreme record is Waiting for the Punchline, and they disbanded after that due to the end of the rock era and to fucking Ray Danniels. I repeat, I'm not an Extreme fan (actually I hated them back when I was younger, because all my friends listened to was Red Hot Chili Peppers, Extreme, and that funky meets metal music), but listening to them 10 years later doesn't give me chills but makes me realize how good musicians they were (Nuno, Mangini), and how bad Cherone took VH's place... http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/wink.gif

Great post ddregs!
I've been listening to III Sides all day. I love that album! I also think that people are wrong when they say that Extreme isn't a original band, because I have never heard any album that is as unique as Extreme III.http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif

So, consider this mofo' closed. http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/wink.gif
