I just purchased a MXR Phase 90 and Flanger. Both are reissues. Does anybody know the settings for each to obtain that early VH sound. I have just started to learn and play Ain't Talkin 'Bout Love and Dance the Nigh Away, and soon others. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, I am thinking about purchasing a new Kramer SD422S/D w/ Floyd Rose (only $169.00 new!, thought what the heck for that price). It has 2 singles and a humbucker. All p/u's are rails. Would this setup get me that sound? (I also believe a delay is needed and I have a Boss DM-2 - would need delay setting too!) Thanks!

Well it ain't that hard, you only have one knob on one of them!
I've never used the MXR Flange, but I do have an original P90. I've alway used it for solos, with the knob turned all the way off.

For DTNA, I think some where between 9 and 12 oclock

The thing I've found with the P90 is it depends on what amp/guitar your using, but I've always found that less is morehttp://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

Hey you know what always feels nice is when you put a fresh battery in a pedal but the only pedal I use is the Phase 90 and let me tell you when that thing gets a fresh battery...I have to throw a cup of cold water on my crotch!!

Coney, how's it goin? I think I can help you.
I use both those pedals in our band , and the settings I've found to work best are, for the phase 90 I use the old scriptlogo model but the setting is at about 9:00. On the mxr flanger starting from the left, manual at about 1:00, width at about 1:00,speed at about 11:00, and regen at about 2:00.
Those settings work best for me, but you've got to use your own ear, and make sure you only use them now and then, not throughout the song. I use a marshall amp, and don't know if that would make any difference, but my friend uses a 5150, and those settings sound good through his as well. Also make sure they're going in direct, and not through the loop.
Good luck.

Since getting the MXR's to sound like Eddie's depends on your amp and guitar as much as the pedals. Do the palm scratching technique for Atomic punk. If you know Van Halen well enough, you be able to adjust your Phase 90 by ear. Eddie doesn't change is adjustments. He sets once and that's it. The phase sound on VH1 is one setting for the whole album. The fingers make it sound different at times. The Flanger, same thing applies. I found to listen to the end Sinners Swing. The noise at the end of the song is actually is Flanger on with the amp noise. You can do that by turning your volume down the guitar and turn on the Flange and adjust by ear. You'll know when you get the sound. Can't miss it.

What sounds good is good!
