Eddie sites Eric Clapton as his major guitar influence. He also was in part influenced by Django Reinhardt (sp?)and a little of Hendrix. Eddie enjoys listening to Steve Lukather, Steve Morse, and Alan Holdsworth.
Eddie's main Rock influences were the Dave Clarke Five, The Beatles, and Cream.

Ed was a big fan/supporter of Alan Holdsworth for a while too. Whether or not he considers him an influence or not. I don't know.

This is probably better served in the VH 101 thread since it's factoids about the band's history.
Attempting to move it there now if all goes well http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

He liked Blackmore, until they played a show together. Blackmore gave Ed the cold shoulder, presumeably because Ed was new, and already 100x better!http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif Jealousy is an ugly emotion.

I read somewhere that Ed use to play Claptons solos super slow on a record player to pick up what the hell he was doing. I believe that is how he first started to learn the guitar.

I'm suprised no one has mentioned that Dave Clark Five's "Glad All Over" is what got the Van Halen's interested in rock and roll in the first place.

I started playing guitar because I wanted to be just like Eddie. But I had no idea where to begin. to simply go from being a complete beginner to playing like Eddie is impossible. So i read that he was influenced by Clapton. I therefore went and bought all the Cream albums. that was much more accessible for me. ONly thing is , now I sound like Clapton, not Eddie! oh well.
It's ok to sound like Clapton during the Cream years, he was flat out awesome then. After that........down the tubes for me.

Eddie said he still knows every one of Clapton's solos note for note in an interview I read.

From The Cradle is ok, but Clapton back in the Bluesbreaker days and Cream days kicked major ass. Allan Holdsworth did influence Edward, and it really shows on 1984. Jeff Beck was an influence as well. I've also heard Ed say that Hendrix had to have influenced him some, but he didn't like him as much as Clapton. Funny thing is I've never head Eddie cite Ritchie Blackmore as an influence. That's a new one on me. Also, for Ed's two handed stuff you can thank Jimmy Page for that, even though Page has never done a two handed tap in his life. Ed said he had gone to a Led Zeppelin concert and they were doing Heartbreaker, and during the solo Ed got the idea.

To the guy who wrote about Holdsworth influencing Eddies playing on 1984: interesting point. Never having heard Holdsworth, can you explain this to me? How so? Which songs/solos? I always liked the ending of Drop Dead legs, the way he does that solo. Is that what you mean?

You guys might be referring to Allan Holdsworth's legato technique. The final run in the solo to "Jump" could be an example of this Holdsworth influence you are talking about. I also think the end of the "Top Jimmy" solo is really neat...I'm not sure if that has anything to do with Holdsworth though http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif

That interview with Lisa Robinson and Ed is cool where Eddie does the crossroads solo note for note. That part of the interview is on one of the 1978 Japan tour bootlegs as the last track. If you know the cream song(as I'm sure everyone does), it's scary how dead on Eddie does that solo. Gives me goosebumps!

Has anyone noticed the similarities between Eruption and Johann Sebastian Bach's "Brandenburg" Concerto No.5? How bizarre.

i never heard that piece, but i read an interview in the inside,i think, where the interviewer says "and eruption is full of classical references" and eddie is like "yeah,..........." or something along those lines.
About 8 minutes into this piece (BWV 1050 - 1. Allegro) there's a solo that's a definate influence of Eddie's guitar technique.
I bought a 4-cd set called "A Baroque (bizarre) Festival" just to add classical music to my collection. And then one day in my musical laboratory I came upon this discovery by total accident. Eureka!
I published my discovery in VH links and well... the rest is history.
BTW for only a few dollars anyone can become a classical music common sewer like me. LOL Thanks, Mark.
