Right before Dave quit VH back in April 1985.. I remember reading the boys had written a couple of new songs for the follow up to 1984... one of which was titled "Eat Thy Neighbor".
Does anyone know if this song/music ended up on 5150 under a different title?

I think eat thy became Summer Nights, ask Glenn, he knows everythinghttp://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

Eat Thy Neighbor didn't become Summer Nights. To my understanding, when Dave left they had started Summer Nights, Good Enough and Eat Thy Neighbor. The first two were obviously finished with Sam and ETN was never used. Close call, but this topic could've been put in the VH 101 Forum.http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif

Thanks for the help, fellas!
Glenn, I have heard conflicting stories, that "Eat Thy Neighbor" might actually be "Summer Nights."

Brett, the VHE does say under Summer Nights; "Rumor has it that an alternate version of this song exists with Roth-written lyrics." Maybe you're right, maybe the Roth version, if it's true, was Eat Thy Neighbor. Where did you hear that these two may be the same song?

Glenn, I always heard that Summer Nights was a title that Dave had wrote and that the chorus that he'd wrote pretty much stayed the same after Sammy wrote his lyrics for it.

I would have thought that with all the mudslinging between camps, if Dave had written part of one of the 5150 songs, he'd have bragged about it. I guess we'll likely never know. Whoever wrote it, in my opinion Sammy did a hell of a good job on Summer Nights; the song is awesome.
I thought I read it Glenn somewhere in "The Inside" in one of the old interviews when Sam was still in the band. I'll have to look through them to see if I can find who and when it was said.

I thought I read in an Inside Alex interview that Al had tape of Dave singin' Get Up or Summer Nights. The same interview where Al stated that Dave was rehearsing with his new band the same time VH was in the studio workin' on what eventually became 5150.
I remember seeing a set of tapes called the VH unreleased 1-7 that had Slow Ride and Funk #49 and Eat thy neighbor on 'em--how sweet would that be to get a hold of those toons?

In reading this topic, a thought came to mind. We've heard many posts asking if Dave would sing Sammy era songs. How about' Dave singin' to Sammy era music with Dave lyrics. I mean the music's the main thing people wanna hear anyhow, right? Supposedly, Dave was involved in the original workings' of songs like Get Up, Summer Nights, Good Enough and others.

Nah..."Summer Nights" is "Summer Nights" and that's the way it should stay. If Dave wants to do it, sing it with those lyrics.

If Summer Nights ever had another title, it would have been "Ripley" not "Eat Thy Neighbor" maybe that song turned into "Get Up"?

FORD, the tune called Ripley was a song that showcased the Ripley guitar. Ed used the Stieny on SN, so SN never would have been called Ripleyhttp://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif
