What type of drumsticks does everyone use and has anyone ever tried Al's Regal Tip sticks? Comments? http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif

Well, for a long time I used Vater 5B's. Vaters were always perfect for me. I could roll any stick and it would be perfectly balanced.

Now, in the last year, I've switched to Vic Firth 5A's. They were a tad lighter than the 5B's and I noticed a difference in my playing after I made the switch.http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

These are all wood tips BTW.

When I used wood sticks I tried a few different types - everything from Zildjian Rock (wood tip), Zildjian Eric Singer model, to Vic Firth Rock (nylon tip), Regal Tip 2Bs (nylon) and Zildjian Super 5Bs (wood) - I even tried Al's - all of em were either too heavy, short, thin, didnt feel right, or sounded weird to me - until I tried my Ahead Rock sticks - perfect balance of everything for me. 5As were always too light for me.

I swear on my life that the very stick Gary threw from the stage (from alex's kit) had no tip but I noticed his production model has. Do you drummer know why?

FINALLY! SOmeone who can confirm this http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif Yes, Alex's production models have wood tips, but live he has them specially made for him with double butt ends to make em stronger and more durable (and tougher on drumheads haha)..do you have one of these sitcks? any scans or pics of em? Thanks!

Awesome!!!! I don't have pics but I can get them for you. Thanks you confirmed i'm not crazy. July 25, 1998 @ Columbus Ohio I saw VH 1 row Mikes side. During Mean street, Gary picked up a stick from Als kit and banged on the cowbell and threw it in the crowd. Luckily for me, it fell to the side (everyone else was crowded to center) so I was teh only one in close range.
It may take a while, because I don't have a scanner.

Yeah wierd drum stick and since it was two years ago it starting to curve http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/frown.gif
No tape on it & unfortunately I don't think Alex ever touched it. Gary grabbed it out of the kit and used it like 4 times then threw it out.

OK guys, I bit the bullet and bought a pair of AHEAD 5B's. Hopefully these will last longer than my last pair. This is the 3rd pair of these I have bought and I'm hopeful that I will like them more this time around.http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

Well, I've broke 2 pairs of Ahead sticks. I kinda liked them because of their balance and their perfect weight. Plus my hands didn't take a huge beating because of the unique grips they have that takes away the vibrations.

The main reason I didn't like them was because they sounded like crap on my ride cymbal bell. The stick just wanted to buiry its self into the bell, unlike wood that just wants to bounce right off the bell. I'm hoping that the 3rd time around is the charm here. If not, I'll play wood sticks the rest of my life.

As for my snare setup...I have a Slingerland Studio King 5 1/2x14 that has a Remo C.S. dot underneath coated. It's cranked pretty tight right now, but nothing like AVH or Stewart Copeland. Just nice and snug.

Yeah - I know Alex uses a Ludwig Rockers Clear w/Silver Dot head on his snare now (with a lot of tape underneath), and it's cranked really tight -he used to use the Clear Remo Black Dot heads - but anytime I've emailed Modern Drummer to ask him about it or back when I was on the VHML - all I got is that Al is VERY secretive about his personal sound and how his snare is set up. Jeez lol, I'm just fascinated, that's all. But I personally use a Remo CS Coated w/Black Dot underneath...

Have any of you guys tried an Aoit(sp) kit? Apparently they're made up here. I have heard them and they sound very good!
