View Full Version : To Draft , Or Not To Draft . That Is The Question !

O.K. , being from Columbus , I've had this dude in my face for 4 years now . He has helped to knock my beloved Buckeyes down a few pegs , turned his back on his teamates , and generally gave the finger to one of the most storied programs in NCAA football history ! It goes without saying , that he is an immense talent , but he's also quite the headcase .

So if you were an NFL GM , and your job depended on you making good personnel decisions , do you draft Maurice Clarett ? If so .....what round ?

Personally , I'd take a chance on the guy in one of the late rounds and hope that he matures into the player I think he can be . Honestly though , once he gets that signing bonus , he might pull a Ricky Williams !

Well I'm a Buckeyes fan as well, and I was actually just talkin to a friend of mine about this topic earlier today.

I personally think he'll be a late 2nd or 3rd pick, and yes I would take a chance on him. He's a big guy that runs with authority. His style sort of reminds me of O.J. a bit, with that stand up style of running. I'd take a chance on the kid, and I heard that the Eagles are considering it.

And I'll guarantee you that he will not get a signing bonus. He's going to have to earn that down the road.

• 25FEB05 Houston Chronicle on Maurice Clarett:

Former Ohio State RB Clarett has undergone a stunning transformation. When Clarett showed up at the NFL scouting combine a year ago, he was overweight and out of shape and in desperate need of an attitude adjustment. On Thursday, Clarett surprised about 200 members of the media by reporting in excellent shape, admitting his mistakes and vowing to turn around a promising but controversial career that had careened out of control. "This day has been on my calendar for a long time," Clarett said. "I wanted to come here and interview with everybody and (get rid) of the knocks everybody had on me."

That's great that the kid has had some serious coaching on what to do and say , but a leopard can't change it's spots ! I like Maurice and hope he does well in the NFL , but it's buyer beware with this cat !

Lawrence Phillips is a bit harsh. I don't really recall Maurice throwing his girlfriend down a flight of stairs.

It's pretty clear that the guy is no saint, but he's no criminal IMO. If the Eagles take him I think it'll be good for him. It's guys like that that need to be put in a good situation with good coaches. Had Moss been drafted by a team that didn't cater to him, he wouldn't be in Oakland right now. It's all about good coaching I think, and if Maurice lands in a good orginization, I believe he'll take the ball and run with it. Pardon the pun. :)

He ran a high 4.8-4.9 40-yarder at the combine, and didn't participate in drills. Late-rounder at best, from what the talking heads are saying.

True enough, Pasquerelli gave those as unofficial times. Something about if you're not top 5, the times get thrown out?

NFL Network mentioned some had him at 4.9.....

At any rate, he'll go somewhere, at least for camp.

I heard 4.9 myself. That's just not getting it done, and apparently he just stopped in the middle of the workout. You just can't have that crap. I don't want a guy that's gonna quit on the team in the middle of the game. His stock has dropped tremendously, and I hope my Birds stay away from this guy.

You're forgetting about falsifying a police report , and insurance fraud . Which are criminal . He got off light , because of who he was ! There's things we know about here in Columbus that never made national news . The guy was big trouble from game 3 of his freshman year on !

Yea I remember that, and they are indeed criminal. It's pretty light in comparison to the shit Lawrence was doing.

I thought Maurice was a very productive player at OSU, but when he pulled that stunt with the shoulder stinger and sat for 3-4 games, I really lost alot of respect for him. It's going to be tough for him to proove to NFL scouts that he's got what it takes to be an NFL player.

That's complete bullshit ! Tom Friend , who by the way , wrote alot of articles for ESPN Magazine blatantly slanted in Maurices view of things , is obviously still blowing Clarett's little weiner ! This guy is the biggest Maurice appologist out there !

Bottom line ........Maurice is a gifted athlete with dillusions of grandeur ! He could have done what was right , kept his mouth shut , won a heisman trophy , and been a first round pick , regardless of a poor 40 time ! But he instead is immature , with no patience , a problem with athority , and a poor work ethic ! Not to mention no , and I mean NO loyalty !

I share that opinion. I saw the clips of "Slow Mo" running the 40, and he was very slow. I don't know if it has anything to do with the weight thing, but it wasn't good. Fuckin Bettis is a huge man, and I'm pretty sure he runs faster then this kid.

Ohio State announced today that Maurice Clarett will NOT be involved with the university's scheduled private workout on March 9 , regardless of what he thinks ! I think the kid was putting the cart before the horse................AGAIN !
Sounds kinda harsh , not to let him workout for the scouts , but he has burned so many bridges in this city it doesn't surprise me ! I think he still has a pending lawsuit against OSU ! What does he expect ?

Maurice Clarett, who was hoping to be a Buckeye-for-a-day next week, has been barred from Ohio State's "Pro Day" workouts on March 9.

Clarett ran two inferior 40-yard dashes at the NFL combine and preferred to run again for pro scouts next week in Columbus, alongside several of his former college teammates. But, according to one of Clarett's agents, Josh Luchs, Ohio State nixed it because Clarett is no longer enrolled at the school and hasn't played for the Buckeyes within the last year.

"I spoke with Steve Snapp," Luchs said, referring to the Ohio State sports information director, "and he said they would not allow Maurice to participate, because, first and foremost, he does not meet their criteria. And then he said, 'Look, we wish him well, but we also feel it would be a distraction for the other players who are trying to showcase their talents for NFL teams.' Well, the last thing Maurice wants to do is be a detriment to the other players. Out of respect to them, we accept and understand their position, and are going to do it elsewhere."

Snapp had not returned telephone messages as of Thursday afternoon.

Under the NFL's guidelines, players can either work out for pro scouts at their college or in their hometown. As a result of the Ohio State decision, Clarett likely will work out in the greater Youngstown area, where he grew up, possibly on April 1. That day, quarterback Charlie Frye is scheduled to work out for NFL personnel at the University of Akron, and, after that workout, Clarett's agents, Steve Feldman and Luchs, intend to bus the pro scouts 50 miles to Clarett's session in Youngstown.

"We understand NFL people have a lot of travel to do, to see these prospects at their private workouts," Luchs said."So we'd like to select April 1 to make it as easy as possible for these NFL teams, many of which will be in Akron."

Clarett made several miscalculations at the recent combine and hopes to rectify those at his private workout. He had originally bulked up to impress the scouts that week, but was too heavy, and, after a crash diet, ran disappointing times of 4.82 and then 4.72. After his poor 40 times, he refused to partake in any more workouts, to the dismay of NFL coaches and general managers. He's projected now as a sixth- or seventh-round pick, if he's drafted at all, and that's why his next workout is of dire importance. He is already back in training, with a speed coach, in Southern California.

Clarett had originally mentioned at the combine that he wanted to run at Ohio State, but it clearly would have turned into a circus. In November, Clarett accused Ohio State of academic and financial improprieties, and it has led to an ongoing NCAA investigation.

But Clarett has said he made those claims to clear his name with NFL executives, that he would have stayed quiet if head coach Jim Tressel and athletic director Andy Geiger had not "bashed" him to the NFL. He has since said he harbors no ill will toward the school and, in a conversation with ESPN The Magazine before the combine, Clarett said he hoped the war of words between him and Ohio State would stop.

"Can we all quit?" he said. "Let's cease. I don't want to be known as a troublemaker anymore. I don't want to be known as an ass. I just want to stop. It hurts so bad. My feelings are being overshadowed by the story. It's to the point I'm not 'me' anymore; I'm a machine. I'm a story. I'm a big ball of controversy. And I want it to quit."

Session planned to recover from poor combineAssociated Press

WARREN, Ohio -- Ohio State won't allow Maurice Clarett back to appear before NFL scouts, but his former high school will.

Clarett will work out at Warren G. Harding High School next Thursday, said his agent Steve Feldman.

Feldman knows it will be a critical day for Clarett, who bombed at the NFL combine in late February with times of 4.72 and 4.82 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

"He could have slipped completely out of the draft," Feldman said. "He needs a good workout."

Clarett has changed his trainer and is doing less weightlifting and more cardiovascular work, Feldman said.

Scouts from several teams plan to attend the workout, but Feldman wouldn't say which ones. He also said he wouldn't rule out another workout before the April 23-24 draft.

Ohio State excluded Clarett from participating in "pro day" workouts with his former teammates earlier this month. Clarett alienated himself with allegations that administrators and coaches broke NCAA rules by arranging perks for players.

Harding coach Thom McDaniels however was willing to help his former player.

"With all my heart I hope he has a great day," McDaniels said. "In the absence of two years of college competition, it boils down to what he does next Thursday in terms of what NFL scouts know about him and how they think of him going into the draft."

Clarett set Ohio State freshman rushing and scoring records in 2002, leading the Buckeyes to their first national championship in 34 years. He was suspended before the next season for lying to NCAA and university investigators and never played another college game.

He then sued the NFL for early admission to the league's draft but, after an early victory in federal court, lost on appeal and several subsequent appeals.
