No, this isn't my new attitude toward this site, it's just the song I'm thinking about right now. I think this song sounds great and can be used as an example that given the right material, Dave hasn't lost a thing. I think if Dave has to put a band together again (and please don't call it DLR Band) I think he couldn't do too bad if he got the guys that worked on this. Steve Hunter was with him from the A Little Ain't Enough album, while Brett Tuggle was around since Skyscraper. I feel he needs better guitarists than what he had on DLR Band - don't know how Bart Walsh is, maybe he'd be okay. Also interesting to note that Dave is not included amongst the composer credits for this song (unless Monty Byrom = DLR), just the musicians (and the aforementioned Byrom). Anyway, cool tune, if Dave and the VH's can't get their sh*t together wouldn't mind some more like this (Hey, Dave, if you have to go it alone, go back and listen to A Little Ain't Enough a couple hundred dozen times before heading to the studio!)
I agree that Dave's voice is perfect for the material in Don't Piss Me Off. It's a shame in a sense that Dave is so connected in people's minds with that Rock God image because material like this allows his fun and attitude to shine without needing to be a guitar workout with arena rock cliches. Frankly, I think that Dave's material improved when Vai left and he got more into songwriting instead of guitar heroics.
It's no coincidence to me that Dave's best solo album is A Little Ain't Enough. Better songs, better lyrics and his voice was really strong.
And I didn't really think there was anything wrong with the players on the DLR Band cd, I think that Dave was really the weak link at that point. Whether that's because of not having a strong producer, I don't know, but Dave's voice was struggling in places and that album features some of his weakest lyrical efforts.
I really like Don't Piss Me Off. Dave is very good with material like that.
I think Dave knew how much ALAE would depend on him as the record's only real name. It's his best effort in so many ways.
DLR Band always sounds to me like Dave just wrote into GIT for some demo tapes, and said "what the hell, why not." The playing on it really doesn't do much for me. Neither does the rest of the album.
What Dave needs to find is a guitarist who's a strong songwriter, and can compliment and encourage Dave's creativity. He doesn't need to be a guitarist that rivals Eddie. I think Dave thought that Terry Kilgore could fill that role, but it seems he was wrong. Maybe a little more like Eddie than that. smilies/smile.gif

I thought Skyscraper was a good example of the guitar wanking being left behind (mostly) with much more concentration on somgwriting. ALAE surprised me from a guitar perspective, as Jason Becker was one of the most annoying Shrapnel label generic shredmeisters around, and he went and made quite a tasteful record with Dave.
I only heard the DLR Band once and I laughed at them.

You know I'd never lie to ya, baby don't get me wrong
And though I wasn't true to ya, baby don't get me wrong
Cuz satisfyin' you is the thing that gets me off
I do a lot of thinkin', some I shouldn't think about
Just a little somethin', you know I can't live without
Gotta fever that's burnin', you just can't slow me down
Don't piss me off, don't cool me down
I've been lied to, from town to town
You got somethin' that just blows my top
Hey now baby well you drivin' me crazy
When it comes to your love now I ain't a bit lazy
Baby don't you worry, you ain't gotta play no fool
Just a little lovin' is all I need from you
Never met nobody 'makes me feel the way you do
Don't piss me off, don't cool me down
I've been lied to, from town to town
You got somethin' that just blows my top
Hey now baby well you drivin' me crazy
When it comes to your love now I ain't a bit lazy
Talkin' dirty, dressin' clean, dancin' nasty by the record machine
Do the walk, love to ball, just one look I believe that's all
Little girl loves to boogie woogie, looks so fine like some sweet suger
Destination is on the floor, give it up just a little bit more
Hey baby can I be excused, I can't take no more
Don't piss me off, don't cool me down
I've been lied to, from town to town
You got somethin' that just blows my top
Hey now baby well you drivin' me crazy
When it comes to your love now I ain't a bit lazy
Don't piss me off, don't cool me down
I've been lied to, from town to town
I can't take no more
You're not that kind of girl
I can't take no more

Easily one of my favorite Roth solo tunes...extremely underrated.
I love the Elvis-like ending where he takes the big deep breath first :D
Yeah, I wish he would get back to this kind of sound after the VH "reunion" is over. IMO a mixture of ALAE and YFLM would be perfect for the mature DLR. Although YFLM was kind of the beginning of the end of his solo career, but time has changed and I think that nowadays it would suit him better then 13 years ago.
Hell, maybe he should reinvent his Vegas stunt. I really enjoyed it. I just hope he gets creative again and plays his own songs rather then playing in the tribute band like he did the last 8 years. I'm not interested in the at all and please spare me with a record like "Diamond Dave".
For me DLR the solo artist died in 1998 after the DLR Band record and before the tour where he started the tribute band act. I just wish he would arise again cause I used to love his music.

not my favorite Dave solo song, just never really got into it. I like stuff like "drop in the bucket" especially the end or "tin cup" which dave did on his acoustic radio performances around 2002ish. Dave can still do good things but the situation has to be right to get the most out of him, he's done some wierd stuff over the years that maybe I just dont' understand but overall he could probably still put out a decent rock album under the right circumstances.
