"Talk Radio Wars...Who's winning and who's losing after Howard Sterns's move to Sirius. David Lee Roth...where to start? The technical difficulties-like dropping phone calls- can be forgiven, but what really rankles is that the winking metla icon of Hot for Teacher has become a scolding libertarian ideologue. And he's boring. Roth spent more that an hour of his first outing interviewing his aging Uncle Manny. (Seriously.) This seems destined to be yet another embarrasing footnote to Roth's career." Grade "D".
OUCH! It goes on to give Adam Carolla a "B" and Howard Stern an "A-".
So, maybe DLR will be free to go into studio 5150 later this year!

Wow, way to give a guy a chance. You might think that they could've waited a few weeks to see how the show was doing before making a judgement.
I will agree though that I thought his Uncle Manny to be a bad choice for his first guest. I know some here were entertained but I thought it was a bit of a snore myself.

I was working in Philly last week and heard DLR's show. First, following Howard Stern in a major market is tough. The one observation I had and would pass on to Dave would be this. Howard Stern made his guests and co-workers the show and never centered the show on himself. Dave is smart, intelligent and has a one liner for everything. I think with a little tweaking here and there he'll be fine.

Dave, give it a rest. Quit your day job, call Eddie apologoze, kiss his ass, behave when you are around him and make more money on one tour than you ever will during your DJ career.
He was pretty good last year as a fill in on WZLX in Boston, but he is one of those destined to only be a "fill in", much like those career substitute teachers that he is hot for.
Yeah Dave call Eddie and get this reunion that you say is inevitable going, enough with the radio crap.
DLR needs a lot more time before the critics should judge him. Stern wasn't that great to start with either, not by a long shot.
Dave's first guest should have been Sammy Hagar. Ratings would have been great!!

You're probably right about that, but somehow I doubt Sammy would agree to that interview. He said after the 2002 tour that he wouldn't work with Dave again.

Dave needs to be given more time. Totally agree on the Stern thing. I listened to Daves show a few times, and hes not the best, but no D either. He seems pretty comfortable now, id love to see how he is a few weeks from now.
Zeo, i love the avatar. Im a Cubs fan, and hate the white sox with a burning passion.
Listened to some of the Podcasts for the first time this morning.
I like Dave - comes off as smart, funny and can tell one hell of a story. I am sure it's not everyone's cup of tea, but for a quick hit each day I enjoyed it.

Blind Lemon,
I have indeed and it was not unlike David Lee Roth.
I listened to Dave online last week and thought it wasn't too bad, but I think he should be trying to get the vh reunion going.

How were those three new singles? Critical masterpieces were they?

Yeah, he's a little mental with the "guard the gas station" analogy...
And I think he needs people to stop waiting to hear what he says, so they can agree with him if he wants to debate this 'heavy' stuff. He obviously is not used to having others disagree...
But he also said in an interview with Howard on Stern's waning days when Stern grilled him on his views, "where are the Iraqis in all this?" I thought that was a good point at least... I just wish he had talked more about that in his actual show...

No, I believe he said that he wouldn't TOUR with Dave again.
I think it would be pretty cool to hear the two of them talk for awhile and compare notes on their experiences with the Brothers.

Don't you think Dave would've already tried this sometime in the last 20+ years?

Yeah, that's it Dave...
Never live life and try new things. Kiss some drunks ass (along with his brother) and do a miserable sham of a "reunion" tour much like Hungar did a cupla yeeyas back and put out beyond embarrassing tunes? YES, THEY FUCKING BLEW GOAT BALLS AND ARE A FUCKING DISGRACE TO THE VAN HALEN NAME!!!
Look how your "hero" Hagar liked doing that? Yes and he DID suck up for the almighty dolla and pucker up BIG TIME. What's he currently doing? Badmouthing Edward. whining about how much $$$ he DIDN'T make on that lame ass joke of a tour and playing in some joke Van Hagar cover band (well, it is if the hack has the nerve to play RWTD live and a lot of various a-holes on this site call Dave's live gig a "cover" band) along with the bass player.
"Kiss his ass" dear lord... You've said some dumb stuff over time but have you no ounce of self respect at all?
Are you THAT blind?
After all that's gone down over the years (that we even know about) if you were Dave, you'd HONESTLY kiss Edward Van Halen's ass?
Yeah...
YOU would.

It always take time for a brand new DJ to settle in and find his niche. Dave's challenge is to leave the VH refences behind cos the world and his mother aint interested in VH.. only we die hard fans are. But Dave has a lot of experiences with travel, race/culture/faith, entertainment industry, health issues etc to share and discuss and he aint afraid to talk so I'm hopin all those things come thru..
I wish him the best of luck.

he sure has a sore spot with vh doesn't he?
well he quit, he deserves everything he got.
i am surprised how coherent he actually is on the show, it cool to know the cat can keep it together and real for more than a few days.
i hope he does well.

Good post my friend. Actually Edward needs to do some ass kissing as well. Getting Dave back in VH is the only way to restore even the slightest bit of fame to this once mighty band. It's not like Deadward has many options.
He does have a million tunes in the can though and ready to go.

Nope. Closest he came with in 1996, and that lasted until they hit the stage at the MTV awards.

I've tried a few times to listen to the man. I can't do it. And it's not even him, it's the sycophants in the studio with him cackling over every inane comment he makes. How do you learn what's funny if all you have is a bunch of yes men laughing at everything you say?
It was sickening - I can't listen to Imus for the same reason. At least Robin calls Howard an asshole once in a while. When I have a problem with Howard's show, it's with Howard himself. DLR is doing himself a grave disservice if I'm turning off his show because of the nitwits in the studio with him.

I can compare the radio gig to this:
Jerry Rice was my favorite football player of all time. He is now "Skating With the Stars".
Do I give a shit?
Not in the slightest.
Jerry can't do what he used to either. But he needs to do something. And it's not being the best football player on the field.
...playing in some joke Van Hagar cover band (well, it is if the hack has the nerve to play RWTD live and a lot of various a-holes on this site call Dave's live gig a "cover" band) along with the bass player.
...
(
That's a little harsh, don't you think?
Hagar didn't sing the song, it was Mike's solo spot. And Mike wrote the song just as much as Dave did, so you think he would be allowed to play this song. (Isn't that the DLRarmy argument on this very subject?) On top of everything the riff to RWTD is THE Michael Anthony riff par excellence.
So with that in mind and the fact that Sams playing 5-6 Van Hagar songs in his solo act, if that makes him a tribute band, I really wonder how you call Daves act, who plays 18 Van Halen songs in a 20 song setlist, and the former atomic punk guitarist performs "Eruption"? A clone band?
Little difference don't you think?

Well I only listen to his show on my drive to work and have to say I don't think its going to work.
It does not stand out from anything out there. I listen to it because its Dave just like if Eddie did a show, I would listen to that as well. He changes topics too much and is afraid of being controversial. You don't have to have fart jokes because O'Reilly/Rush are conservative and yet draws in millions of listeners because they offend people in what they believe in.
Talking with friends and co-workers, I have not found one person who is still listening to it. They think its horrible.
I love VH3 but that does not change the fact it only sold 500,000 copies which 400,000 ended up in used CD shops.

I have been trying to give Dave a try too in the morning. But, I would have to agree with the review that it is just boring. Between the bumper music (the music going into and out of bits), topics, guests, and just overall flow of the show it feels like it doesn't belong on an FM rock station. It have a "lounge lizard" feeling to it. It isn't exactly bad, however it just doesn't fit the persona of WBCN. I think what is worse is that it makes Dave sound older then he is.
I don't know...

:wtf: I'm sho' that the tune was written around Mikey's bass riff for the tune. Mikey brought in the duhn! duhn! duhn! duhn! riff and Runnin' With The Devil wuz born.:wtf:

Servo,
Sorry, but Entertainment Weekly are reputable enough to be a valid source of reviewing how good or bad DLR may be. Evidently if any of us were given the opportunity to try a radio show as you suggested, we would be much more entertaining than David Lee Roth.

Yeah I want DLR to succeed. Any member of VH doing something in the limelight only helps their legacy. God knows its been screwed up over the years.
I think the hard-core DLR fans love the show like hard core Eddie fans would love a tuba filled album from 5150. However just because 1000 people like something does not always mean that its decent.

I have to agree about the 3 tracks from BOBW. When was the last time you heard them played anywhere, except from someon'e personal music stash?
Get Sirius, they play them on there all the time, along with a shitload of Sam-era stuff.
When's the last time you heard MWM or CGTSNM on regular radio? 10 years ago.

I wasn't talking about MWM or CGTSNM. I still am having a hard time paying for radio. I will think about it though since I wanna hear Stern again.
My point was that the three new songs get about as much play on regular radio as the two Dave ones...which is nothing.
Dude get Sirius, worth it. You'll enjoy it. You can always cancel it.

Yeah we got a stroke named Rover in Chicago who replaced Stern. I may get it. My brother has it. He gives me the Stern reports. I thought the whole revelation about his palstic surgery sounded like a lame revelation. I was thinking of getting the car adapter for my ipod first. If I want to listen to Dave I have his albums! Radio has a void with Stern gone.

Think of it this way, you pay for what you get. Free radio, albeit free, you will be getting nothing but the same repetitive 10 songs in a row. With 20-25 minute commercial breaks in between a 3 songs or so. On the otherhand, with satellite radio, you have the opportunity to listen to music commercial free with tons of variety. XM has the deepest play lists and you will hear songs that you haven't hear in years or on radio all together. Not to mention talk like Opie and Anthony, Air America and Fox Talk Radio. With Sirius you get Howard, and more diverse choices in classic rock. Think of it as Cable TV, would you rather watch something horrible on you basic ABC, NBC, CBS or Fox station (with the exception of 24 of course!) or would you rather watch the HBO, Discovery Channel, Comedy Central and ESPN to name a few stations?
Dave's radio show is taking shape... Seems to be improving and finding a groove each day. I don't take any of the current critics take on Dave's new gig. Talk radio isn't like releasing a new album in 1978... it's something that builds over time. Stern wasn't shit when he first started out.

Started finding his groove? Did you listen to the show from yesterday? I downloaded this morning while I was doing some work, and jesus I felt like I burned off half my brain cells trying to comprehend whatever he was talking about. The whole discussion of page 5 of the New York Post was just mind numbing with his so called banter on Paris Hilton was just atrocious. Dave needs to stick to talking about what Dave knows best. That is music, touring, the great outdoors and so on. However, him trying to comment on the whole Osama bin Ladin thing, with that hole "Robin" was more painful then getting circumcized by a rusty nail... I gave Roth Radio a shot, however Roth Radio has nothing to offer. Come on Dave get back into the studio and make another album alone the lines of ALAE or EEAS...

This is definitely not a show for dim bulbs and half-wits. There's not a soul 'round that has walked a mile in Papa Roth's sensible shoes...no one heeya has thiz cat's experience...so it's mind boggling that a Van Halen or a Roth fan wouldn't be interested in a show by someone who took all(or most) the spiritual credit for classic Van Halen.
