My band had a show that night so I missed Dave, but my brothers went and said it ROCKED!! He even uses "1984" as the intro to "Jump" now, which my brother said drove the place nuts!!
It's funny, because I've seen Dave about a dozen times now since 1991, and that same review could've been written 5 to 10 years ago and still been printed today:)
Dave is Dave!!

"I was trying to take the band in a direction that I thought was appropriate, and Roth was trying to take the band in more of a Las Vegas direction. And there he is."

Why are they taking shots at Reno in the review? Has this reviewer been to Reno lately? We have had some awesome bands come through here the past few years. I saw Velvet Revolver this year here and I'll be trying to get tickets to see NIN in a month. They were here earlier this year and sold out in 10 minutes. Jackass reviewer!!!

It is actually an unusual Dave review; the reviewer didn't like the backing band or Dave's stage persona, but thought that he brought it vocally. It is usually the other way around.
Dave is content being a nostalgia act, anybody going to see more than that will be disappointed.
I'll say this, it was nice to hear the guy give Michael Anthony some respect. I've never thought him to be the greatest Bass player on the planet, but his vocals are crucial for that classic VH sound.

There's a fact, Jack. :thumb:

Hey, I'm glad he gave Dave high marks on his vocals.
I hate to admit it, but I have to agree about Dave's wardrobe and "look".
I know it's superficial and shouldn't affect the experience, but I wish Dave would tone it down and just wear a t-shirt and jeans and maybe grow his hair a little longer.
He looked cool back in the day, but the look he has now was never "in".
I feel kinda guilty badmouthing the "Diamond One".
Guess I'll throw on the six-pack and kiss my WACF wallposter for penance. :)

I'm with you man....anyone who says Dave's look doesn't matter just doesn't get it. Everything matters....his look, his hair, his outfit, his voice...everything....he brought it all to the table for so many years....that's what we got hooked on.
At least the majority of the people there sounded like they had a good time, bad review or not. Who listens to the critics, anyways?
That's as good a review as we could ever expect from Roth without Van Halen in 2005.
The reviewer's only real jibes are at Dave's aged looks. Well damn... I'd like to see anyone in their 50s looking young and hip. Roth wore jeans and a t-shirt in 1993 and it looked completely out-of-place for him.
Give the guy some credit for making a half-full concert hall get to deafening volumes.
Sounds like a show I would have like to have attended.

As far as I could see, he only added one line, the last one in the review, "His 90-minute show featured mostly Van Halen hits -- and he looks like your dad."

That is a brilliant observation. I could have said the same thing after I saw him in December 1999.
It appears to me that this reviewer knows his Van Halen. He pointed out that Michael Anthony carried backround vox in VH.
I also agree that Eruption is totally out of place in Dave's show. Its inclusion just adds to the "cover band" feeling of the entire show.

OMG! When he had long hair, everyone picked on him for that. And if he came out in jeans and t-shirt, I'm sure that would become a bone of contention. I'm sorry, but I rather enjoy seeing a rock star look like a rock star and not someone I see standing in line at Wal-mart. I want entertainment and Diamond Dave delivers from his shit-eating grin to his gyrating hips and high kicking toes. I think reviewers and people alike (and notice I separate the two) who turn to an artist's appearance as a means to badmouth their performance are cheap. You can't enjoy a show because you don't like the pants the guy is wearing? :wtf: On the last tour, Edward looked like some freaked out samurai munchkin half the time, but what did that have to do with his performance?
It's not you Ben-Halen, it's the pack of dogs that come out every time Dave does a show that get to me. But you should feel guilty...kiss the WACF poster, but watch the slobber. ;)

You make some great points!
The truth is, if Dave got back with VH, It wouldn't bother me if he wore a tutu and a rainbow afro wig. :)

Diamond Dave had an expiration date from the get go. He based his stage persona on being a good looking sex symbol.
His good looks are now gone. When you see Joe Perry, he looks very simillar to what he looked like in the 70s, mike anthony also looks somewhat simillar.
Dave, no.
And for him it's a tragedy coz his live singing voice was never that great.
It's a different case for solid, technical singers like Paul Rodgers or Sammy. If there looks go, there's still he voice.
For DLR, his looks were always CRUCIAL, more than almost any other singer. When his looks went, a big part of his credibility left the building. But at the same time, he's the one who created the "Diamond Dave" character, and enjoyed massive success with it, so you can't feel sorry for him.
Hmmm....usually these reviews talk about how Dave couldn't hit the high note anymore. Seems he pulled it off....whick kicks ass!
It really seems to me like Dave can't win no matter how he presents himself nowadays. If he had come out with thinning long hair, he'd catch shit for that. So he cut his hair and is dogged because the reviewer thinks he has a "fathers hair cut"......
jeez!
