I have been hanging out in Songs and Albums ALOT lately and have been supporting DIVER DOWN in different ways . DIVER DOWN IMO wins and it's not even cloose . Now VH 3 fan says that DIVER DOWN sucks simply because Ed Van Halen does not like it . Well to me thats a bullshit reason . DIVER DOWN has some rocking kick ass music . 3 on the other hand has nothing really that rocks , oh the outro to FIRE IN THE HOLE . Gary did not fit in Van Halen . 3 sucks balls . DIVER DOWN has the FULL BUG , HANG EM HIGH , ect.. Unless you like JOSEPHINA or that song HOW MANY SAY I . This is a old argument I know , but DIVER DOWN needs more credit than it's getting . 3 will never touch it or any Dave or Sammy era release . Just to make a point that I have a grudge againt CHERONE I even like DIVER DOWN better than BALANCE . VH 3 fan , you need to be schooled in VAN HALEN 101 man . Am I allowed to like both VHIII and Diver Down? Because I do. I agree, Diver Down is a great album, and in my opinion it should have been represented on the Best of album. Little Guitars, Hang em High, Where Have All the Good Times Gone, Cathedral, Secrets; all great tunes. But I like VH III as well. No, not as much as any Dave era album, and probably not as much as any Sammy era album either. But there are some good tunes on III. I love a Year to the Day, Without You, One I Want, Once, Josephina. No question, if your looking for it to burn like Fair Warning, for example, you're going to be disappointed. I love EVH as an artist, and to me III was his vision and creation.

Diver Down is better,but only because the songs are easier to listen to.I enjoyed Ed's guitar playing on 3 a lot more.

So when an album sucks balls....does that mean it is bad?.....How many originals are on Diver Down? It's almost like DLR's Crazy From the Heat album....Not that both were bad or "perfect" albums...I like BOTH albums as far as the guitar playing. As far as originality....3 wins....Not a good question to me.....especially when one of them SUCKS BALLS...wow what a concept of a critic.

I liked III. It was a total departure for VH. My favorite off the whole cd is 'Once' there's something in that song the touches me. After 'Josephina', I lose interest though.

Diver Down on the other hand is a fun album. There are great tracks all the way through. To me it's a toss up. Sometimes I wonder if people hate VH III because of the music or because it came on the heels of a possible Dave reunion in 1996. Maybe I'm a hypocrite because I like to put my two cents in on topics that compare songs. But the VH albums aren't in competition with each other. What you think of one album doesn't change another. I like VH III but that doesn't change the fact that I think Fair Warning is the ultimate Van Halen album. I've said this before, but all the Van Halen albums are part of the family to me, and I wouldn't want to change any of them. Just my opinion, not trying to change anyone else's.

First Glenn , just because of the reunion fall out with Dave has nothing to do why I think 3 sucks . Obviously I am not the only person who thinks 3 BLOWS . Record sales will stand that up . Don't even compare 3 to FAIR WARNING or DIVER DOWN because 3 does not kick any ass at ALL . VH 3 fan , how long have you been a VH fan ?

Well for me this is easy, I love DD. The only songs I don't like are Pretty Woman and Dancing in the Street. I love WHATGTG! and though it's a cover song, it's 50 times better than the Kinks original version. That was just plain weird. Secrets is great, I love Big Bad Bill for some reason.

Guitarsolos, yes DD did have 4 covers, the same amount that CFTH had but Happy Trails shouldn't count cause it's only about 1:20 long and WHATGTG should be considered a VH song because it's better than the Kinks version. IF you haven't ever heard it, it sounds nothing like VH's version. It's, as I said earlier, weird.

As for VH3, I like it better than OU812 and OU812 has a couple of cool tunes, When It's Love, Cabo Wabo, Feels So Good, Finish What Ya Started and Black and Blue. VH3 has a different feeling than DD so I don't know why your comparing the two, I do know that for some reason people don't like them. I think that can be summed up like this. People say they don't like DD cause it has "too many cover songs". That's bullshit. And people say they don't like 3 because "Gary sounded terrible" or whatever you want to say. Well, that's bullshit as well. Just say you don't like the fuckin album cause you don't like Cherone or because you don't like Dave. I'm sick of this and it's getting to the point that it's pissin' me off.

I like all the Van Halen albums! I personally like VH III better then Diver Down because it branched off to a different level for VH. Although I do love many songs on Diver Down, I just have a personal problem with an innovative and influential band recording half an album of covers. Diver Down to me was an incomplete masterpiece that started off with great original material but probably rushed to release the album for WB so they recorded cover songs and picked a less then creative album cover in the process.

I would still take Diver Down over the best album of 95% of any other artists! My opinion!

Just for the record, DD had 12 songs and 4 covers, if you count Happy Trails. 4 out of 12 isn't half Georgie. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif It's 1/3.

Plain and Simple . Diver Down does not get the credit it deserves . Usually I respect others opinions BUT I will say it is a fact that Diver Down is a funner album to listen to than the ramblings on Van Halen 3 .

Whoever thinks I am full of shit , just listen to the 2 . I don't like being a prick about this but I am on a mission to proove that Diver Down is a masterpiece . Dave turns in one of his BEST vocal works with the song SECRETS . Now tell me that WITHOUT YOU or ONCE or DIRTY WATER DOG compares to this work of ART .

Actually, I like Without You as much as I like Secrets. But not Dirty water Dog. I hate that song.

I think DD was a fair album. It definitly wasn't their high point creativty wise but it featured some cool songs and grooves. VH III on the other hand showed why they needed to wait a few years to make an album without Roth, or make an album with roth. Everybody was so pissed about the fact that Ed and Dave couldn't get their respective acts together and we got stuck with Cherone.

For me it has to be VHIII, by a nose.
DD was to me the weakest album with Dave.

DD hands down. And not for bashing Cherone fans.
Because of a real band playing, tight and tight.
Because of Alex doing incredible fills and keeping rhythm at a breakheart pace.
Because of Mike playing great bass lines and doing backing vocals as great as usual.
Because of kickass songs like Little Guitars, Hang'em High, Secrets, The Full Bug, better than any of VDIII songs.
Because they were able to sell it well even though those were disco years.
Because Eddie was playing kickass guitar parts (listen to every solo, every rhythm guitar section, to those classical guitar bits in Little Guitars intro).
Because that was Classic Van Halen, a band that lasted 9 years and did 6 great records. Not a band that was showcasing great solos and (if u want) great lyrics but no band's music. Ed's solo project. I preferred Ed's Star Fleet Project with Brian May for those solos.
Hiring Cherone to make him sing like Hagar was the worse move they could do.
This has already been discussed a million times, and it will be for another million.
Record Sells have been so bad for VDIII that Cherone splitted/was forced to. DD sells were higher and higher, and the subsequent tour was selling out every stadium. VDIII tour, while reported great, cancelled many of the dates for Ed's or Alex's problems or for not selling enough tickets. That never happened to VH. In fact it happened to Van Danniels. They can bring back the magic. Bring back Dave!

Definitely two of my least favorite's, but overall I like VH3 better.

DD has my vote. I'm partial 'cause it is the album that turned me on to VH, plus its the first concert I saw of them in '82.

This is close, but I give it to 3. I like 3 -don't love it, like DD - don't love it. I guess it's a case of the lesser of two evils. Not to say either album is EVIL, but you know what I mean. I give it to 3 because even though it tanked it terms of sales, at least they took a fuckin' chance. You can't say they were with DD. Too many covers. "Dancing In The Streets" is the worst song they've ever recorded and I'm a Dave fanatic. But I can also see the forest for the trees. So what Gary stunk up the joint. The band went out on a limb and the limb broke. Tough titty. The guitar work is way better on 3, so is the drumming (even though because of the mix Al sounds like he's playing across the street in half the songs). I don't think you could compare two more different VH albums. They come from opposite ends of the spectrum. Respect them for what they are. And to those of you who ahte either album, or any album, do you really think they TRIED to make a bad record?

I'll keep mine short. I'll give it to Diver Down, but I like all Van Halen albums. I liked 3 and thought they had great unity from the "Without You " video, didn't know till later on it was mostly an Ed and Gary album.

I like VH3 but I have to say Diver Down.Its a fun cd!!

at the time the album came out i was disapointed in the all the cover tunes. WACF and FW went into a curve that defines VH for a lot of us. DD did not continue on this curve, but it's cool with Ed's Dad on clarinet. I listen to Secrets a lot. Now that I'm older I've grown to appreciate having seen that tour a couple nights. It was better than '84 for me. I couldn't handle tai chi in sf *lol* But the DD show I remember Ed getting the spotlinght, putting his foot on the raise to Alex's drum set during Hang 'Em High mid point.
