This isn't really a rumor, but Dave recently confirmed in an interview that he's been meeting with legendary producer Rick Rubin in L.A. I've been waiting for this for years. If anyone, outside of Ted Templeman, has the ability to successfully guide Dave through the production of an album it's Rubin. Rubin's track record (AC/DC, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc.) speaks for itself. He seems to have the knack for helping artists bring out the best of themselves. Although I honestly believe Dave can still produce great "big rock sound" material, he needs someone like Rick to helm his ship. If this union happens, it'll be Dave's best solo album since "Eat 'Em & Smile."

Yeah when I first saw that I got excited. Rubin knows what he is doin and has the balls to do it. Look what he did for Johnny Cash. Imagine what he can do for Roth?! Imagine if he was doing a VH album, but back tro what we DO know... Rubin has the clout and pull to get Dave "on" so to speak.

I had the honor of working on that CASH project, I was part of a small folm crew that shot a B & W documentary for that show (for Rubin's company)and part of it wound up oin the back cover...the best part of the whole deal was that The original Man in Black asked if I'd have a beer with him...The producers agreed I should, that was cool!

Anyway, this pairing makes sence and I'm betting he's gonna do for Dave what he has done for others in the past. Let the music speak for itself!

Well I HATE the chili peppers with a PASSION!!! thats 'Sweet Leaf' rip-off 'give it away' is the most annoying chorus ever recorded!!

And he did diddlysquat for AC/DC - Ballbreaker SUCKED!!!

From what I've read he just turns up and the band records - I think he's vastly over-rated.

Anyway DLR has a habit of name dropping people - remember prior to DLR Band he was suppose to be working w/Billy Sheehan and Carmine Appice! So I wouldn't read too much into it.

But if he did produce - it would mean more exposure for Dave - make him more relevant, some credibility - so basically ignore everything I just said!!!!!!

If Dave and his current line up have Bob Rock as a producer.......... WOW FUCKIN' AY!

That would be the shit!

Bob Rock is the type of producer that likes to build on strengths of the musicians and likes to leave the weaknesses out so that there are no showstoppers.

Example:

Metallica= Black Album
Motley Crue: Dr. Feelgood

Need I say more........

Rubin also produced some of Tom Petty's best work, and had a hand in the first Black Crowes album. He was rumored to have been the producers on Black Sabbath's never-finished reunion album.

A "name" producer like Rubin is a good start but Dave needs GREAT songs to make this work.

Rubin is working with Pearl Jam right now. New album is due in mid-November.

Rock is in the studio with Metallica both producing and playing bass as well as adding background vocals. Metallica will likely hirer a bass player for their next tour so they only have to pay him peanuts. (Hey Michael Anthony could be available, but I seriously doubt that because somethings gonna happen this fall, the planets are lining up just perfectly. graemlins/thumb.gif
Anyone else feel it?

Uggg, License To Ill is the worst Beastie Boys album they've done.....

listne to Paul's Boutiqye or Ill Communication or even Hello Nasty if you wanna hear a good BB album.

Need I say more........Please don't. Bob (C)Rock helped ruin METALLICA. As far as the Crue goes....I could give two shits what Bob did to help them.

I believe to my soul that Rick Rubin could produce a great, great cd with Diamond David Lee Roth on vocals, harmonica, and acoustic fingerpickin' bluze geetar...preferably with Ed at least...and Al...& Sauceface...or Billy Sheehan...I'd bet my bottom dolla that he could re-invent DLR like he re-invented and souped-up Johnny Cash, The Chilli Peps, and now Neil Diamond. How cool would a bluesy, old-school rnb cruchfunk album from the mighty Diamond Dave be?...

Rick Rubin just produced a Neil Diamond record. Logical step is to produce a Diamond Dave cd. From the Jewish Elvis to the white James Brown. Owww! Huh!

Funny, I saw Trujillo on the beach yesterday pushing a baby stroller -
is he outta Metallica? Had I known this, I might have said something.

Yeah, but look on the other side....didn't Bob Rock also produce that last steaming pile of crap that Metallica put out, too?
I know he played bass on it.

Rick Rubin makes great albums and captures an organic sound like I've never heard. System of a Down is point in case. Rick is very much a student of Eddie and his sound and has mentioned the brown sound many times.
Chilli Peppers rock and "Give it away" still floors everytime I hear it.

Where did you hear that Rick Rubin just turns up and the bands record?
That is such a generalisation.

Rick Rubins choice of Preamps, mic's, mic placement, EQ's, comps etc all play
a big part in the sound he achieves.

I've always said that all along. Rick could capture a mean VH sound.
