Hi all, and happy new year.

Just found out about this board through a google. I used to be a big Van Halen fan back in the 80s, and been kind of drifting for the last few years. I always liked the band, but back then I used to listen to them all the time, especially when weight training.

Very recently I heard the songs Me Wise Magic and Can't Get This Stuff No More, and I was totally blown away to find out that it is David Lee Roth on vocals! I say this in all seriousness, listening to those songs has renewed my love of this band. Dave's vocals are simply awesome, and immediately brought back memories of the VH I remember. Jesus, I wish these guys would do a full album together. Those 2 songs are f*g awesome, not just for Roth, but Eddie's guitars and the music overall. Fr the longest time I wasn't even aware they existed, and it is so nice to hear them now. I only happened to find out reading an article that these tunes were recordings from a short lived reunion with Roth and only released on the Best of Van Halen album.

So let me ask you guys -- when exactly were these 2 songs recorded with Roth? IMO and personally for me, Roth's vocals kick ass. Always did, and always will. If Hagar thinks he can compare to Roth, no way I say. Roth has great vocal range and dynamics when he sings, an unmistakeable talent and element that defines VH in my book.

Don't get me wrong, I still like VHIII and Sammy Hagar stuff, in fact I love 5150. But listening to David Lee Roth on a couple of FRESH new tracks just reinforces that he is THE BEST of all vocalist they ever had. Roth still has it after all these years.

Roth is an album singer. That's not truly a bad thing... Some guys
come off better live and sound like fluff on albums. Steven Tyler for
one... I mean I do live Aerosmith's albums, but his vocals are 10 times
better live than on albums.

My point is that when you talk about who is the best vocalist.. I think
it depends on what you mean.. I think Sammy sounds better live and
more fluff on album... But Dave sounds better on albums and worse live.

They were recorded back in 1996. To think that anyone in VH could record such things now is probably hopeful at best. Listen to what has been put out since 1996 by both VH and DLR, and see if you don't come to the same conclusion.

I do like Sammy's vocals too of course, but I prefer Roth. I have never seen VH live, so I'll take your word for it :) One particular non-VH song of HAgar's which I really like is Winner Takes It All (from the corny Stallone movie Over the Top). I heard way back that was EVH playing bass on that track.

Ahhh.. 96, ok thanks. I thought it was somewhere around there, late 90s. When I heard these songs I was really impressed with DLR's vocals after all these years. He still sounds amazing.

DLR's vocals on those tracks do sound great, but according to the stories, it was like pulling teeth getting the songs together. First it was going to be one song, then Dave said let's do another; they couldn't get another together, so it was just one again; then Dave said 'how bout the first one we tried to work on'; It was kind of the same deal with Sammy last year saying he wanted to do a whole album, but Eddie couldn't keep it together. Or so I've heard.

Well I was as happy as anybody to hear DLR with VH again.

I thought he was great live cause he had that vibe goin with the show and with the music. A live show is good when the guys don't stick to the album note for note. If I wanted a show like that, I'd save myself some dough and just listen to the albums at home. :drunk:

I do love the song Me Wise Magic and of course I do love Roth songs. But there is no way to technically prove that Roth is a better singer than Hagar. Roth is a better frontman than he is singer. Hagar is a better singer than he is frontman. That is a fact. When you judge their singing, it's better to listen to live tracks rather than recorded tracks.

I prefer a singer who remembers lyrics and can sing them correctly, so I would rather listen to Hagar even though Hagar does have his flaws. Nevertheless, I still think Dave is great.

Then again, it's my opinion and you of course have yours.

Funny thing... the first time I heard Good Enough (5150) I swear I thought it was DLR saying "heeeelooo baby". Anyway, here I am in 2006 having a 10 year late reaction to a couple of VH songs recorded back in 96. Silly thing is, I bought Best of Van Halen (on cassette) around the time it came out, but I mostly listened to the A side. Then I lost the cassette around the tape deck to CD deck in the car transition. I purchased the Best of on CD a couple months ago, and one day I was surfing the net looking for news of a VH reunion with Roth and I read this article stating they did record 2 songs and I was like WTF?! Then I listened to them, and I was like holy shit that IS Roth! I guess I don't follow VH news as much as I should be, but to me its as though its 1996 now and I am getting that first time initial reaction.

As usual, EVH's guitar work is outstanding, but he did some extra nice work in Me Wise Magic.

After what Sam said about recording the new new tunes on BOBW, I wouldn't necessarily put all the blame on Dave for taking a while to get the BOV1 songs recorded. Just a thought.

I am a voice from the future.

In two years a CD called "III" will be released.

Run. Run from this. NEVER listen to something called "How Many Say I."

You have been warned.

Find yourself a copy of the DLR BAND and you can have even more fun - too bad it couldn't have been the real thing, but turn this album up and you'll find some great tunes, and who is this Sammy guy?

Haha. So who are the Redheads?

Sammy is the Red Rocker, so his fans are Redheads. Redheads are the Polar Opposite of Dave-or-the-Gravers.

Welcome to the Links, bongo! You'd better be wearing a cup. ;)

DLR Band was mediocre. Songs like Counter-Blast and Blacklight were just so... bad. The sound is thin, the songs uneven, and the album a disappointment. If a person doesn't have DLR's prior solo albums, those are the ones they should be checking out.

Hey Bongo - lucky you, you got to listen to Van Halen con Roth and it was fresh and new to you...I'm jealous.

In 1996, I was psych'd to get the the new BOV1. I had a similar experience...they were plaing MWM on the radio here in Chicago all the time, and I kept missing it. I heard the last few seconds once...so when the album went on sale, hearing DLR in front of VH for the first time in years, it was magical.

I like both tunes. I thought it was easy to tell that a lot of effort was put in by all, including production.

I got similarly excited for the three new Sammy tunes in 04. I think some effort went into those, but I think they were probably battling and figured they'd better hurry up and get on the road before they killed each other (Sam and Ed)...too bad...with some more work, both lyrically and overall song-wise, I think those songs...all three of them could have kicked ass too...

Your 'facts' are personal preference... I prefer Roth's voice and don't base sound resonance on "vocal range" or whatever, or else Michael Anthony would be the lead singer. And how would subjectively listening to live tracks prove anything regarding singing? There are so many variables, ROTH was still in 20's and wild when with VH, SAM was well into his 30's when he took the gig, and obviously he probably was a little more grounded. But I've heard more than one boot of Sam sounding bored, and just plodding through a song by-the-numbers...But he hits every line (almost).

What did you think about Dave singing over Paul Anka to end the show this morning?
