View Full Version : Dave says CBS will give him 3 months off to tour with VH

According to The New York Daily News (http://www.nydailynews.com/), former VAN HALEN singer David Lee Roth once again called for a reunion of the band's original lineup during his "Roth Radio" show on Tuesday (Feb. 14).
"People want the reunion," said Roth. "No one will pay respect to what any of us do [musically] until we get the reunion out of the way.
"Once Eddie [Van Halen] does that, everything else he does can be seen with a fresh eye."
Roth made no secret of his own enthusiasm for a reunion tour, indicating he'd already gotten the okay from CBS Radio executives to take a leave of absence if such a tour happened.
"VAN HALEN would go out for three months," he said. "That's all Eddie could handle. And then the next morning, I'd be back at this mic at 6 a.m."
A tour would also pay well. Roth said the band already has offers on the table for $1 million a show.
However much Roth may want the band to reunite, however, he wasn't using sweet talk yesterday to make it happen.
He compared Eddie Van Halen to Sly Stone, whose brief and ragged appearance on last week's Grammy telecast rekindled reports of substance abuse.
What's happened with Van Halen "may be on a par with what's happened with Sly Stone," said Roth.
Roth also dismissed recent VAN HALEN shows as "lite rock" and said touring with a singer hired from a TV search would make the band "a novelty act."
He said the situation was different with INXS, the first band on "Rock Star", "because their original lead singer was dead."
He suggested the main reason anyone would watch VAN HALEN on "Rock Star" would be "the Gong Show factor ... seeing who screws up the most."

I'll say it again, he is digging his own grave. He needs to shut the fuck up. I guess he is desperate for ratings or is a complete bitter asshole. What does he think he is accomplishing by talking like this? I would hate to be his manager.

This is the most level headed comment Dave has made in awhile. A reunion would be nice, it probably wouldn't last though. A quick money grab and then we are left right back here scratching our heads and talking about another reunion. I would love to see it happen, but 20+ years changes people, it would take a miracle to pull off. Relationships change and so do people and the comment about Sly Stone may have been too much and another push away from a reunion. Just my opinion.

Im listening to Dave from yesterday.
Man, he is going off on Eddie, calling him out. Saying wake the hell up and let's do it right. Telling him to stop being a little baby...
Does Dave talk about anything but VH? My he must be boring 95% of his audience to death.

Shit I'll go on a fucking cruise anyday, who wouldn't! You guys are fucking crazy. If I can get away from the daily threads everywhere hearing about how Dave is whining about VH, it would be even better. :)

It seems like that is just Dave being Dave. He is probably at the point where he knows that he and Eddie will never be pals and will probably not get along. This whole VH thing is about money, probably the only thing that Ed will listen to nowadays. He is telling it like it is, as he always has, instead of hiding behind a bottle like Ed seems to be doing. If the reunion doesnt happen, so be it. To me, it probably wouldnt be much fun watching the show anyway knowing how much they despise each other.

I really think if I was Eddie and Alex to just do it.
Then they can finally put the nail in the coffin that was VH. No more reunion talks, no more what ifs. Heck when they can inducted into the RRHOF, it won't make it awkward.
However I would only do one show. Not three months. Do one out in LA and make it a PPV.
NOaverageJOE
02.15.06, 08:06 AM
Yeah. One huge show would be good. I'm sure they could at least somewhat get along for that one show...maybe...I agree with Dave in that Eddie can finally move on after a reunion. There would be no more shoulda, woulda, couldas. People would have to accept that what's done is done. The only reason it isn't done is because of the tease in '96. If the '96 incident never happened, nobody would expect a reunion.

Very bad idea...
they can do a one-off, but in philly and make it PPV..with golden ring tix as well..
Dave's best argument is that everyone in the world wants it, that wont go away and the money is there. So do the reunion and become free. Then its all over and as he said, everyone will respect whatever else they do from there..like he said yesterday, you have to give the people what they want before they give you what you want.
Before Vh3 came out, what did the world want? Acvh reunion/album/tour..and they didnt give it to us..so what was the result?
Ive said many times, i love the album, aside from its production flaws, but in the mainstream, people closed their minds to it as well.
It's pretty simple really. And Ed's continued resistance is against more than DLR..he's resisting the collective will of music fans worldwide..To do that, he must have some pretty unbelievable reasoning...
think about this as well...how hard or easy is it for Ed to feel whatever it is he's feeling, resist the want of the world AND NOT say anything about it to ease the pressure? i mean, a simple, straightforward 10 minute press release detailing why it will or wont ever happen would certainly go a long way

Well the Diamond One certainly makes some good points doesn't he.
I gotta say, I agree with his rationale (for lack of a better word).
S'what I've been sayin all along around here. Get it over with and move on. Gotta hear more live Dave with the boys at least one more time.
I don't agree with the one show thing back east, but if that's what they decide so be it. If I were them I'd keep it in SoCal since that's their roots. Hell I'd make the trek for that.

I'd rather VH do an album than a tour... I realize I differ from alot of you, because I'm happy that I can hear classic VH by playing bootlegs and the albums. Them playing live together isn't going to really effect me.
I think this is Dave saying he knows he will never be back in the band for good,
but to tour and give the classic band closure. This might not be as bad as some
think... I think Dave visioned of being back in the band for good, but he's basically now that he knows that isn't possible.
I agree with his comments about Sly Stone.

then you havent been following anything Dave has done for the past 30 years. He is telling it like it is. If there IS a reunion, it will be for money (as far as the Van Halens are concerned) and Dave is ok with that. He doesnt have to like them to play a concert or two with them. It would help, but it just aint going to happen in this lifetime. I think Dave has figured that out. I am sure that Dave wants a reunion for the fans, but if it doesnt happen its not going to sway him either way at this ridiculous point in the VH's career.
I just find it funny that Dave plays judge and jury on all things VH when his post-VH career has had HUGE pitfalls and embarrassments as well. Frankly I still think he believes he's as relevant as ever, especially because of this radio show...a show no less that most of the country doesn't even get. Dave tells things the way he sees it obviously, and that's where it should be left. He just sounds so fucking bitter and angry.

Dave was just cryin a few weeks ago about the millions he missed out on because Ed and Al didn't want to tour with him. The 2000/2001 whatever failed reunion attempt because "lawyers got involved" gee I wonder what they were arguing over?
IMO, for Dave, it's all about closure and more importantly money. He knows that they can do at least one last reunion to cash in and call it a day all in one big bang.
And We'd all be there :D

then you havent been following anything Dave has done for the past 30 years. He is telling it like it is.
Yes, you're right, I haven't followed Dave's career very closely. :)
So he's telling it like it IS?
It's fact that Ed's like Sly Stone. It's fact that Ed would only last three months. It's fact that they have offers for one million a show. It's fact that nobody will take anything they do musically seriously, including his own solo gigs, until they reunite. All these are facts?
What you meant was, he's telling it as HE sees it. Which is fine. I just don't believe Ed and Al will respond in a manner conducive to a reunion with these tactics.
The only thing that was fact outta Dave's mouth in that snippet was that VH doing reality TV to find a lead singer would be like a Gong show novelty act. That much is a fact. :)
Seems to me he yet again put foot in mouth; not just wanking about a reunion and bashing Ed concurrently, but also admitting in a roundabout fashion his own solo musical efforts, not just Van Halen's post-Dave, haven't been taken seriously.
I'd like them to play just so everyone on all these sites bitching about it will STFU and we can move on with life.
I guess for those of us who saw Dave with VH, it's not the end of the world if it doesn't happen again, it will NEVER be close to what it was then anyway. I hope all of you are prepared for that reality. But if it will stop all this senseless bickering between the fans, then let's do it and get it over with.

I havent heard too much from dlr that is cutting Ed down. You have to hear it in his context to get the gist of what he says.On paper, words can mean alot of different things..just like on here..
One point ot make is that one of the reasons Ed may resist is because DLR doesnt treat him like a God, doesnt let him be lazy in his music or do just what he wants. IMO, DLR would get the best of what's still in Ed musically. He wouldnt put up with half-assed crap or too many love songs.
DLR acts relevant because he IS relevant. HE is Stern's replacement on national radio. That's relevant. He is still the preferred frontman for VH, 20+ yrs since he's been with them. That's relevant because the fans want him back. Dave is and always will be equal with EVH because he's an original member, an important one at that and Ed/VH hasn't eclipsed anything they did with DLR in the band. It's not like they didnt sell any records or change RnR w/ DLR..they did. They did nothing close to that w/ Sammy. Yes, they made millions upon millions of dollars and won a grammy..but they may have won a grammy w/DLR on "5150" as most of the music was written with DLR in mind.
So time has passed and dlr hasnt done anything to speak of either. All that means is that the sum of the whole is more than the parts ..time hasn't diminished dlr's status as legend in that band one iota..he is still the top dog as far as fans are concerned.
Not only is DLR relevant, he's right on the money with his timing as well. If he cant get it done with the stage he has now, it wont ever get done. Everything seems right..no singer, no plans to do anything, what the hell is Ed waiting for?

I agree. Were all VH fans in one form or another. However, Dave in his prime couldn't remember the words the songs he wrote. What would it be like now? Somehow I feel it would probably be an huge letdown. Although part of me does hope to have the opportunity to find out.

Ive heard that the DLR show is actually starting to pick up new affiliates. miami was one that was mentioned on his show, he mentioned another out west, but i dont recall which. Being as it's 6 weeks into it, i expect the other affiliates to look at a qtrs worth of ratings before considering picking him up or not, so the jury is neccessarily still out on this.
I am wondering why people are ripping on dave though. Is it purely in defense of EVH?
Im also wondering what people expected from DLR's show and why they assume it will suck?
I do agree with one thing, however. Ive seen DLR w/ VH in its prime, 3 times. it will NEVER be like that again.
I, for one, aren't expecting that. Im also looking for closure and i really want new music. I'd trade new tunes for a CVH tour..but the tour is where the money is..i wouldnt complain either..i'd go front row for sure and just marvel at the chance of seeing them one last time, and hearing all the good songs...could you imagine that concert setlist?
Maybe that's ed's problem...DLR wont be singing and sammy Vh and Ed cant imagine not playing some of it...anyone agree with that thought?

Actually, the category VH won for, Best Hard Rock Perormance with Vocal, wasn't even created until 1989. (When the first award went to Jethro Tull over Metallica).
Previous to that VH's only nomination had been for Best rock Vocal Performance, Duo or Group for Jump.

Kudos to you Mr. Roth! Make it happen! You alone carry the torch of CVH. Give the fans what they want. God knows the VH's wont get off their complacent, procrastinating asses. They lack leadership.
No see right there is the problem. The do not lack leadership at all! This all comes back to the burning question...
Why should Edward, Alex and Michael allow David Lee Roth to return to a band that he once quit?
(A) Because David Lee Roth says they should.
(B) Because the fans demand it.
(C) Because they want to do it for themselves and for the fans, because they feel they have unfinished business.
(D) Because they want to relive what it was like to have a complete ego-maniac fronting the band again.
Unless the answer for the band is (C) then there is absolutely no reason for them to do it. They owe Dave nothing. If they had thrown Dave out of the band 21 years ago then maybe they might owe him a little something but remember, Dave walked out on the band. He made the mistake and like it or not Dave has to live with himself and his poor choice for the rest of his life hoping they will bring him back at some point.

Actually, if you listened to his show, you'd already know that he said he was equally to blame for the everything, as is the rest of the band. He said all that is so in the past and it's time to forget it and move on because life is short, and the window to do a decent reunion is even shorter.

You know, i once had this girlfriend, when we first met it was just great. All my friends were telling me that i should settle down and marry her. They almost talked me into to it. We had a falling out and we broke up. I was sad for awhile but i felt it would have never worked between us. I was just something about her and i could not place it. My friends told me how dumb i was and how my life would be shitty because i broke it off with her. For TWO long years my friends kept tell me to get back with her. They told me the she wanted to get back with me and how much she cared for me. I wasnt mean to her to just told her we were not made to be together and i hope she would find someone new and go on with her life. Several years later she call me, FROM JAIL, asking me to help her, i went down and bailed her out. I asked her why she as in jail she said that she was a hooker and got picked up of that and they found drugs on her. well i reached into my wallet and gave her some more money and told that was it from me and left her at a bus stop. she still tries to call me to this day. but the past is the past and no mater how good it was between us years ago there is no way in hell i would ever consider getting back with that nasty bitch. i imagin Ed and Alex feel the same about dave.

Personally, I think Dave is 100% correct. The 2004 Sammy tour brought closure to that phase of the band as I don't think anyone wants to see that incarnation of Van Halen go through the motions again. It is clear Ed and Sam are not friends and I don't think Sammy has any desire to put up with Ed's BS.
A tour with the original lineup would do the same and could free everyone creatively.
BTW, I think Dave's show is improving dramatically. The interview with Henry Rollins was just awesome. Personally, a Roth and Rollins show would be kick ass.

I really just want an album, I could care less about a tour. Ed was embarassing up there in 2004, and that was with three great players up there with him. Dave's voice is hit and miss live, and he improvises a lot. The combination of an alcoholic Ed and an over the hill Dave is not a combo that interests me too much. But I am sure that is the road that they will take as the money is in the tour. I think there is still some magic left between Ed and Dave in the studio. But live? No thanks.

Dave is 100% correct
1. People want this reunion.
2. If Ed/Dave/Mike/whomever put out solo projects, even if it's the best work of their lives, people will still say, "Yeah, but if classic VH got back together, man, that'd be the best." Just do it, get it over with and move on
3. Ed IS a walking human train wreck. The crap that his career has become he brought upon himself.
Say what you want, but Dave is dead-on correct. And as far as Dave being washed up and Ed being the man: Who has a job with national recognition and who is sitting home and sulking every day?

Around here, yes. At VHLinks.com, it's impossible to claim that you like both Ed and Dave. It's a very weird dynamic about this place.
Are you kidding? I dream of that setlist at night! I say just pick four or five songs off of every album starting with VH I and ending with 1984. Which brings us to...
Maybe that's ed's problem...DLR wont be singing and sammy Vh and Ed cant imagine not playing some of it...anyone agree with that thought?
I see what you're saying, but a Dave reunion show would be about just that: A celebration of those old tunes. 5150 would be out of place on that tour. Ed would know that going in to it (but Ed's so damn crabby, who knows).

I don't think that's accurate. What people seem to find odd is that at the Links, Dave is not exempt from criticism. Most people are not ripping on Dave because of loyalty to Ed, they're ripping on Dave because from time to time, he deserves it. True. Mikey does just want to play, and have fun with the fans.
In a way, he does sort of use his FUCK YOU money. Think about this: All the time Mike spends playing with Sam, touring with Sam...generally being his best bud, he's sending a mild "fuck you" to Ed and Alex. Not a biggie, just a little one. As in, "Yeah, I'm having a great time playing and touring with the 'enemy.' You want to fire me? Go ahead!" But they don't and he knows they won't. But it is sort of a subtle "fuck you."
I don't blame the guy, in fact I like Mikey very much. I've never met him, but every time I hear a story from a fan who has, they always rave about how friendly and personable he is.
Would you rather sit around waiting for Ed to get off of the couch or hit the road, make some music and have a great time? That's an easy choice. Go, Mikey!

Hey, unlike most of the other threads in this forum which are mostly bickering etc, this one was actually a good read. Just wanted to add my two cents:
This is like democrats vs republicans. No one will ever be happy or compltely agree wiht each other, so regardless of what happens with VH, there will always be this arguing going on. With taht said, however, the only thing that can happen at this point that will be the best of both worlds for us fans and the legacy of VH is for the cvh reunion. I dont think anyone here could really be against it especially if we get some new music from it. I dont think much of the public at large really cared about the reunion tour with sammy, but if dave came back, whether it sucked or not VH would have one last shot at being on top.
Also, does anyone think that part of the reason that Ed isnt down with it (among many other reasons) is that he might not be able to play those CVH tunes anymore, certainly not like he used to? I know on the 3 tour he could and did nail everything, but could you say the same about him after seeing him on this last reunion tour? He might butcher the songs, thats part of the reason I believe there was no DVD release of this tour...nonetheless, I guess im in the independent party of this dilemma, any VH is good VH for me.

You have to be a member, but check out Eddie's playing at the soundcheck. He rips through "I'm the One" just like the old days. The show, on the other hand, was a disaster. Eddie can play flawlessly when he's not hammered...unfortunately he seemed pretty messed up about 50% of the last tour. I have no doubts that he can play, though. The songs he messed up on were Sammy's, and usually his easier parts. It could very well be that he was just trying to add spice to some of the basic parts and he just doesn't know how to improvise well. I can't tell ya, but he usually played the Dave songs well.
Big Dainjerus
02.16.06, 11:52 PM
yeah, i remember reading about the soundchecks and how eddie would fly on them, as long as he was sober. And then by the time the show came around he was so drunk he couldnt play much, and I was skeptical of it, thinking that people were just trying to hold on to the old eddie much as I was during the show. But this proves it, Ive been waiting to here a soundcheck, THANK YOU! I stand corrected he can still shred and it gives me a little more hope about the future.
I think Dave might be trying a different method to getting Eddie to clean up. I don't know what people have done in the past but it's usually with encouragement and being nice to them. Well, Dave seemed to go in the opposite direction by making fun of him and saying some not-so-nice things. I don't know if that's Dave's intention or he is trying one last time to drum up some interesting in a DLR-VH reunion or for his radio show. With Dave you never know.
As for a reunion, I'm all for it. If it gets Eddie out and seeing him on stage one more time, I'm ok with that.

The only Lost Dignities are the ones who won't acknowledge their fans, update their website or give you a reunion for the Songs YOU REALLY WANT TO HEAR.....
DLR is ready and willing to please the fans, acknowledges them, keeps the website up to date and reads the emails.
What else about dignity? Dave doesn't need to beg and he's not, but I'll bet you, if it happened, you'd be first in line for a ticket. or would you skip it?
Dave is sad........Down hill from 1984.............
have you seen ed ? hes not exactly looking in 1984' form! lol
he also doesnt play like it either. infact I would say hes a shell of the person he use to be. the fire has long been gone. after balance it has not been a good showing. Im not a sam fan but I did think balance was a decent musical recording.
for all the people putting dave down....
atleast dave still has the fire he did back in the day. still tries to improve his vocal ability and put on a good show for the CVH folk. he cares about the fans and thats something not anyone can say about ed and alex.
I am so tired of the sam and dave argument. I may not care for sammys vocals(which again is another debate that makes no sense, him having a better range..etc etc) has anyone here thats a sam fan ever listened to a old CVH show ? dave uses his voice , singing voice when hitting higher notes and when he wails, not scream, wails. personally I dont think either singer has much range if your talking true singing voice and ability. dave wails his higher notes and sam screams/screaches his higher notes. to me thats not range but vocal style. let it end already. not one of them has a singers voice with true vocal range.
sam has his talent in certain areas and dave has his. just let it rest. no one ever comes out on top in that argument.
and for all those who make fun of dave and how hes a different person than 1984.... well lets look at ourselves. I am not exactly the 17 year old I use to be and I am now 37! sam is not either and if anyone who is a true man actually think sam looks cool in his pjs, capris and wacky colors ala 1980's has got to be kidding me. not to mention the weight gain...etc
put it to rest. it bugs me so much. each person is different and each person gave their talent to VH the best they could. sure we all prefer a certain singer but lets let the debates and agruments rest. no one ever wins and surely no one is ever right. :brickwall

he also doesnt play like it either. infact I would say hes a shell of the person he use to be. the fire has long been gone. after balance it has not been a good showing. Im not a sam fan but I did think balance was a decent musical recording.
Say what you will that its a crappy album but Eddie's best work since 1984 was on VH3.
I saw Eddie three times on the last tour. One was bad, one average and one was like 1986.
As much as Eddie is a mess, all he has to do is get clean and practice for a month or two. He is back to old Eddie. Providing arthritis and old age does not hinder his fingers.
Dave on the other hand can no longer get back the fountain of youth because he has damage to his vocal cords from touring and discretions of his youth.

I have a feeling CBS is gonna give him a lot more than 3 months off.
Exactly.

Yeah, I wonder. On YFLM he sang IMO better than ever, supposedly because he took some singing lessons. Then with the DLR Band suddenly he is really straining on the high notes. This hasn't changed. During his radio show he sometimes sings and hits them and it sounds awful. Really, really bad and I am a huge DLR fan. Yet he claims that he can still hit them. Well technically correct, but man ... he'd rather not. I think he's deluding himself there, no wonder when his entourage goes "i love your singing"...
So I wonder if some true effort with singing lessons could do the trick again. I think his singing is probably the major obstacle to a reunion, because they brothers see themselves as "classy" musicians and don't want to play with a singer, who embarrases them.
problem is roth is trying to hit high notes he never could hit.
its that he cant do them anymore he never use to try. its been a new thing since 1996. hes trying to do what his vocals never could. the BS that he cant do them anymore makes no sense cause he never could. it sounds strange cause its not in his vocal ability. it never was in his vocal ability.

What are you smokin Dude? Are ya nutz? Okay, let's give you the benefit of the doubt in regards to DLR's voice being lower than 25 years ago (HELLO!!!) - with age and cigarette smoking does not help preserve a youthful sound, but his voice has aged like a fine wine. DLR digs the blues and can do this successfully with a lower pitch in his voice and with the bluesy rasp he has perfected. He's not trying to sing high pitch and if the notes from the old classic songs are higher than his current range...so be it. It sure as hell doesn't ruin his voice...if anything, his voice in singing the classics has more character to it. So get off your high horse about the Sisters not wanting to tour with DLR for a Reunion Concert based on a lower pitch in his voice.

I saw the title of this thread and thought to myself... "gosh, they're giving him a lot more time off than that for a tour..."
