I can't respect a review that states Brian Young being just as good as EVH back in the day. That's just nonsense.

Yeah, I read that. Ridiculous statements like that pretty much make any other comments dismissable.

There is only one Eddie Van Halen.

1. I agree with the only one EVH idea, BUT guiys like Brian Young and Russ Parrish nail his tone and style. I'd like to take a blind "taste test" 80's cola style to see if I could tell. Could they write any song even close top what they mimic...hell no...thats what made Ed...well ED.

2. I saw DLR 2 times this summer and he blew my mind. Not only was it a great performance but he sounded phenominal. Everyone has their opinion of any given show, so who knows, but I believe it could have been bad.

I agree with #2. I saw him this past summer as well and it ROCKED. He and his band sounded GREAT. I loved it.

PeaceI was at Naperville too. I am very confident in my review that Dave kicked ass that night! I wonder what happened since. I have heard some bootlegs of later shows, and he sounds worse than a few years ago in those shows. WTF? Inconsistent I guess.

Dave has been hit or miss a lot in the last few years. I have been lucky enough to catch him "on" most of the time. I did see him once when he was off, and dear Lord was it bad. I think Dave also has not played in a while, and he needs a few shows to get warmed up. He has to shake all the tar and Jack off his vocal cords.

You guys don't know what you're talking about! Dave was awesome on Friday night. Except for not quite reaching the squeal that he used to, his voice sounded fine to me. Maybe you were in the back and the wind blew the sound to shit. I know I've been to Aerosmith outside and it was terrible because the wind was blowing the sound all over the place. I was right up front and except for a few drunken assholes pushing and shoving, we had a blast. Dave is pure entertainment. He's up there with that shit-eating grin wiggling around, laughing and joking, and throwing kisses and basically just enjoying the hell out of himself and that passes right on through to the audience. I really don't understand what you expect. Is it so much better when Sammy is standing around drinking tequila and BSing about how great he is because he's a regular guy? Lemme tell ya, he ain't no regular guy, that's his schtick the same as Dave telling the young woman down front that he thought he recognized her mother. And the difference is that's funny. The only disappointment for me was that he didn't sing Yankee Rose. And no, his band wasn't Van Halen, but these days, they're all you're gonna get and Brian Young is not Eddie Van Halen and you know what? He didn't try. His solos were Jeff Beck. I think a lot of you just go out there and no matter what Dave does, you're gonna hate him. Why even spend your money then? I don't spend mine to sit through Sammy Hagar because I know I'm not going to like him. If it isn't one thing, it's another with you. I guess this is a big thing, so I will tell you that Dave's hair was cut short and brown, he looked great, and performed great. If you're going into a concert that judgemental, I don't think you're ever going to enjoy yourself. It's rock n' roll, it's Dave, and the closest thing you're going to get to classic VH today and probably in the future, so why can't you just enjoy it? Either that or stay home and listen to the perfectly produced sound of your CDs or Sammy or whatever it is that floats your boat for Van Halen today. For me, it's going to see Dave live.

not directed at you z28girl...but the last thing i care about is what Dave's hair looked like...especially if someone harps on that and says nothing else about the show. i didn't buy the first six records and Dave's solo stuff because of his fucking hair.

start a hair thread in Main over at the ddlr forums and see how long i let it stay open. :D

Here is the truth. Those that love Dave, and dislike Sam, want Dave to sound good and thats what they listen for. So to them, Dave is going to sound good no matter what. Period.

I have a hard time taken value in anyone's opinion that their favorite VH song(even Hagar era) is Dreams...enough said.

z28girl

I think Hagar4Ever has it the other way around. It's the Sammy fans who can't admit a good show when they hear it and again I ask why pay to go to see Dave if you've already decided you don't like him? I can say that Sammy has a good voice, but IMO with Dave you get more entertainment value. The way he connects with the audience is the same vibe that the band (VH) had back in the day and that kicks ass. I might like Sammy more if he sang classic Van Halen the way it should be sung and didn't insist on singing his solo stuff during a VH show and that's why there's a divide among new and old fans.

Right now, though, we're all in the same boat, but at least as a fan of David Lee Roth, I can get a full concert full of Van Halen whereas with Sammy, you're going to get one or two ballads maybe. If that's what you're into, so be it, enjoy.

Now because a song like "Dreams" has special meaning to me, my judgement isn't as valuable? It doesn't take much to listen to a concert and decide whether the guy is talking or singing.

Don't bother. All anyone has to do is read the "DLR Orlando Review" (article) to see what the average person thinks about all this. Some people choose to never see it.

Acutally dude, I have paid to see Dave, last year in Orlando for New Years Eve, I had a great time. My statement was simply that people hear what they want to hear.

Actually don't people hear what they hear? Just like people see colors in different shades? I'd say its more passive the selective.

Uh oh...this is a slippery slope because your boy Sammy and the band got ripped last year on many occasion by reviewers and average people. Some people never choose to see it.

I pay absolutely no attention to reviews. The people who are paid to go to concerts are not fans. They're too busy memorizing the set list to enjoy a song and get into the spirit of the event. They write and print the review the way they want it to appear, not based on what might be the opinion of the majority, the minority or even fact. And I guess I really can't argue the point of what I heard versus what you heard because obviously, Hagar fans are these discerning musicphiles whose ears are so finely developed that only they can hear the atrocities being committed for $10 a ticket while the lowly Roth fans, the black sheep, tone deaf and ignorant, continue to bop their mulletheads in blissful unison. :drunk:
