Roth takes over Stern's mike on Tuesday
Monday, January 02, 2006

Plain Dealer Reporter
There's no predicting what it will sound like when David Lee Roth jumps on radio Tuesday morning.
Roth takes over the giant microphone left behind by Sirius Satellite Radio's new standard-bearer, Howard Stern. Roth's reign begins with a 6-to-10 a.m. stint, heard locally on WNCX FM/98.5.
Stern's successor is getting a tattered throne -- fewer stations, Federal Communications Commission scrutiny and constant comparisons with the person who used to sit there. Other entertainers, including Jon Stewart and Danny Bonaduce, said no thanks, according to a press report.
But Roth's ego and optimism refuse to allow him to contemplate defeat -- or reveal his plans for the show. It doesn't even have an official name yet.
Calling last week from New York, where the show will originate, the former Van Halen frontman predicted his debut would be "the best day of my life," "a thunderbolt in your Pop-Tarts" and "a good excuse to put bourbon in your coffee."
Roth, 51, emphasized that he intends to make the show his own.
"The only thing I have in common with Howard Stern is Hanukkah," Roth said.
The man who speaks several languages and is an author, world traveler, helicopter pilot student and EMS technician said his preparation for radio goes back to his boyhood days of telling stories around campfires.
"My entire life is very, very different" from other radio hosts, he said. "You simply have to have positioned yourself. You can't go to school for this. Can't fake it."
He hinted that future guests might include potty-mouthed comic Sarah Silverman, former President Bill Clinton or one-time Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss. What about Eddie Van Halen, who has famously feuded with Roth?
"I've already called," Roth said, but there are still hurt feelings. "Eddie's off in his own world."
Roth said the radio gig doesn't mean that his music career is over. He expects the show to travel all over the country, meaning that if he tours, the show will go with him.
The show may travel from coast to coast, but Infinity Broadcasting -- now called CBS Radio -- chose to air Roth only in the eastern part of the country.
Roth will be heard in Cleveland, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Dallas and West Palm Beach, Fla.
Comedian Adam Carolla replaces Stern in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Portland, Ore.
Rover, morning DJ for WXTM FM/92.3, will replace Stern in Chicago, Detroit, Cincinnati, Memphis and Rochester, N.Y. Rover's Cleveland local listeners will still find him on "92.3 Xtreme."
Many Stern listeners undoubtedly will follow him to satellite radio. His last live broadcast on terrestrial radio was Dec. 16. But CBS Radio expects the Roth Army to fall in line behind their man.
Roth was born in Bloomington, Ind., and grew up in Los Angeles. As Van Halen's original lead singer, he cultivated a reputation for nonstop debauchery and a larger-than-life personality.
Van Halen released its first album in the late 1970s. Roth left the band for a solo career in the mid-1980s, and briefly reunited with Van Halen years later. He released a CD with another group, the DLR Band, in 1998.
So is a radio career a step up -- or down -- from being a rock star? Roth noted that he'll have millions more listeners than the Rolling Stones can fit into one stadium.
"My show is the best thing to ever happen to your hangover," he quipped.

Danny Bonaduce turned the gig down...Dave has returned to rule the world.
And I agree, Ed is off in his own world.

I'm lucky I get 103.1 the buzz in West Palm Beach!
I'm gonna try to tape the first show.
Taping? That's so 1985. Just set the computer up to record it. No muss, no fuss, no messing with tapes.
"I've already called," Roth said, but there are still hurt feelings. "Eddie's off in his own world."
Now only God knows if Roth actually spoke to Edward. But, c'mon Ed wake up and grow up man!
I really feel for ya that you had cancer but you yourself said that you kicked it's ass.
I also really feel for ya that Val split. But, get the fuck over that already too dude. She's had a cock inside of her so many times since she left you it isn't even funny.
Make a decision one way or the other regarding the band and then regardless of what that decision is: Get on with your life dummy!

Am I the only one that thinks this will happen eventually?

No. I've been saying it for a long time. Roth will be back in VH! I just can't tell you when. :p

Oh, I know, Bobby, we've seen in the past you've got all the inside dirt on Valerie Bertinelli.
An appropriate rejoinder regarding your own wife would be apropos here, but screw it...I've seen the pics. :)

My wife has nothing to do with this dudester. What are you Ed Van Halen in disguise. Why the anger?
I'm starting to think that MikeL, seenbad, and Double MM may be right about you after all. And, that displeases me because I think you're OK in my book.
Good night. :)

All I know Bobby is I'm not the one who's proclaiming to all on a public forum about the dicks inside Ed's ex wife.
So who's in character and who isn't?

Getting Ed on the radio would be pretty sweet for his ratings too, he has such an uphill battle every little bit will help.
MIKE- what software would one use to record the radio ?
I'm not so sure that it's about Dave not holding any grudges. It's probably got more to do with wanting to get the show off to a fast start. What better way does DLR have to draw otherwise indifferent listeners than to have a chat with EVH on air?
None of this has anything to do with VB. Let's leave her out of it, eh?
MIKE- what software would one use to record the radio ?
I use Audio Hijack. http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/ I'm not at all sure what time DLR's show is on tomorrow morning, so I've got it set to record from 4:59am to 11am. The program is pretty slick. It'll grab the audio, then send it over to iTunes. All I have to do is leave the program running. I suppose I could write a little script to launch it each morning.
I have no idea what a person with Windows might use, but there are bound to be equivalents.

:brickwall I knew that was coming. I'm still in Windows-land
Oh well, I'll find something.
I was actually going to record Stern on Sirius, we don't get Dave in Chicago, we get some douche "Rover?" no thanks.
Look for Streambox VCR, and see if that might do it. I know people used to use it to record MP3 streams, but I don't know if it'll record the audio output of an application.

DAVID LEE ROTH Says VAN HALEN Reunion Is 'Inevitable' - Jan. 3, 2006
Kim Lyons of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review interviewed former VAN HALEN frontman David Lee Roth regarding his new gig as a radio DJ, taking over the coveted morning drive time slot vacated by Howard Stern. Diamond Dave talked about the radio show, his job as an emergency medical technician in New York City, cheekless pants and pretty much everything else on his mind. The question-and-answer session follows:
Q: Howard Stern had a pretty risque format, to put it mildly. How much do you think your show will resemble his?
David: Not at all. I'm not even remotely close to Stern. I'm not a humorist; I'm not a comic; I'm not a comedian. My sense of humor has teeth — that makes me perfect for the inner city. Just like you, I'm a (expletive) cynic. You'll never get tired of listening to me speak your mind.
Q: So you won't be going just for laughs.
David: The difference between me and a comedian, I don't try — comedians are desperate for the funny. With me, you either get it or you didn't.
Q: It sounds like you have a plan of how you want things to go, but not a schedule, or a format, true?
David: It will be completely my way and not resemble anything that's ever been on the radio. What other voice can ingratiate and infuriate the liberal arch left — of which I am a card-carrying member — and the NASCAR nation — of which I am a card-carrying member?
Q: What's the latest VAN HALEN news? Do you still talk to those guys?
David: I talked to the drummer (Alex Van Halen) about a week ago. And I think, eventually, the inevitable will happen.
Q: You mean a reunion?
David: Sure. And it definitely won't be rockers with walkers. Getting onstage and singing "Dance the Night Away" — let me tell you how difficult that isn't going to be. When people bring up VAN HALEN, I talk about it with pride and with no apprehension at all. I play those songs all the time.
Q: Not to get too off-topic, but is it true that you've been working as an emergency medical technician in New York?
David: I got my badge about year and a half ago, and I've worked in all five boroughs, mainly at night. I speak fluent Spanish, so I am often sent where that is an asset. I've seen this city from the inside out. How many other DJs do you know have delivered a baby? I'm on my fourth.
Q: What are you hoping to do with the radio show?
David: Every fourth week, we're going to up and move wherever — whether it's the Grammys or the Superbowl — all the bastions of sin and degradation.
Q: Including Pittsburgh, of course.
David: Absolutely. I am going to visit everywhere we play on the air. It's a performance, after all.
Q: Your, um, unique background will serve you well on the radio, then?
David: It's curious what qualifies both Stern and myself to do the same job. He's a family man who has spent the last 20 years in a small little studio and did quite well. I've spent the last 30 years leading a life of crime and international intrigue, so perhaps I'm overqualified.
Q: Will you be wearing those cheekless pants on the air? And, how will we know?
David: Let's face it, I look better in (cheekless) chaps than Al Franken ever (expletive) would.
Q: And what do you think will keep people tuning in every morning?
David: I'll tell people this: it'll give them a good reason to slap a little bourbon in their coffee. You'll get a bottomless cup of attitude, and the second one's free.
Interesting read.....You've got to hand it to Dave, he lives life his way and doesn't seem to give a shit what anyone thinks. I would love to hear him shooting the bull with a drunk and incoherent Eddie some morning. Fun, fun!

I don't believe there have ever been published pictures of Al Franken in assless chaps.
That could hurt his senatorial chances.

The take from a VH tour w/Roth at the helm would make the take from the '04 tour look like church collection plate offerings.
I'd sell my dog for a ticket to a Roth fronted VH tour.

Please don't let Roth get back with VH i would rather never hear from them again.....man atleast sammy can still sing and has mobility!!!! my god....it will be like with ozzy...you will need a brace to hold him up and so many fuckin studio enhancements to make him sound like a singer...he actually will have to be wheeled around in a wheel chair on stage and lip sinc......i would rather see phil collins or fuckin john mayor sing than some washed up (since 1984-85) front man.....my god "Me-wise magic" and "can't get this stuff" sound like Christopher Reeve after his accident!! it was so "STUDIOIZED"!! is that even a word?
Please VH BRO's just HANG UP THE GLOVES!!!! or for god sakes, if people want that shitty roth Showmanship and no voice.....get Ralph Saenz from the Atomic punks....he sounds better live than dave ever did on fuckin record!!!!
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>"Metal Edge" magazine boasts, "Ralph Saenz does David Lee Roth better than Dave himself!" Ralph's recreation of David Lee Roth's live persona is so uncanny, it must be witnessed to be believed>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Oh well who cares.....it's not to say i didn't like the roth era....i like it all....just not a 55 year old one...or however old
