Yeah, Gary may have not been the best choice but damn Edward nailed it on that tour. Hearing Mean Street gives me chills.
Edward, come back from the dark side.......

I enjoy most of Van halen III stuff. That tour was pretty good. Ed's tone was great. Mike and Alex were good. Gary IMO is alright as a singer for VH. Of course not as good as Dave or Sam. As many people here say,
VHIII IS UNDERRATED!!! :thumb:

You can download (on you computer) that whole concert and plenty of other VH performances on my forum (the link is on my signature). Those YouTube/Macromedia are only good to watch..., you can't save them.

Fuck all of you.....Cherone fronting live VH rocks.
I loved Cherone on the DLR stuff.....Hagar stuff he sucked, but damn, compare the energy level of that show with the last Balance tour.
I like most of "3" and thought the tour was the bomb.
Ed's tone sucked...a little harsh, but his playing was clean.

May be a stupid questions, but how differently would people view Gary's live stuff if he had his long hair instead of that alternative look? May be a stupid question, but he does look out of place. I loved the Philly show with Gary and wanted to see where the band would be a few albums in...we'd have a few by now.

I hate to admit it, but I wondered the same thing myself. It's unfortunate, but sometimes people (music fans) hear with their eyes. I didn't like III myself, but as far as the live show, if Gary had looked and moved differently, I think a lot of fans would've been more into him. Not me, but a lot...LOL!!!

We as vh fans wouldn't have been happy unless it was DLR or Sammy singing. Gary has a great voice, they played a lot of classic van halen, the band sounded amazing, gary did his best. I wish they hadn't called it "van halen." any comments?
Mikey wore his mullet proudly on that tour.

And they tell you that it's ok with You Tube (which is what I tried).
I pasted the link for the video jump, selected "You Tube" as the provider, and then it downloaded. So now I have some file @ 9megs on my hard-drive, but when you double click to launch . . . nothing.

you know ... any comments about garys performance really doesn't have any weight in reference to him as an individual.
he's a standup guy, fo sho, everyone knows.
but dayumn, thats just wrong. wrong wrong wrong. it's not just that he doesn't belong in van halen, he doesn't belong on the stage.
gary just doesn't have 'it'. now for that matter, dave no longer has 'it' either in terms of onstage presence. but gary has nothing. no stage presence, no game, nothing. he can hit the note but the dude simply tries too hard - because this just isn't the job he's suited to.
great guy, terrible performer. he should consider a sensible career, and maybe weekend gigs for fun.

Gary was between a rock and a hard spot. He gave it his best and for that, I applaud him. Did he fit VH, IMO no. Would it have been different if they called it something else, I doubt it. People want what they want and at that time, it wasn't Gary. As for his appearance, it was distracting when he was in a black suit with an open collar shirt and Edward was wearing a t-shirt with the sleeves cut off and ripped up jeans and the rest of the band was wearing something similar.
As for III, I still do not feel it's that bad especially Edward's guitar work. Over produced, yes. Editing needed, yes. Gary not straining on vocals, yes. Musically, excellent work from Edward.

VH suffers from the curse of the wongly dressed frontman.
Dave with assless chaps, white fur boots.
Sam now Mr red-orange-yellow capris.
Gary with the gay black shiny ensemble.
If these guys don't know what to wear, they should go with the plain jeans-t-shirt kinda look. Black jeans.

The old saying goes "you don't know what you got until it's gone". While Gary made me pause a few times too with his prancing, etc., I'd take that every damn day of the week at this point.
What they had at that point was passion. Creativity. Energy. They were in a creative groove. No rules. No limits. At this point, who gives a shit about them doing a tour like '04. The whole thing was bloated.
III saw them doing something they hadn't done in a long time, experimenting with sounds, music, ideas. If Gary brings with him an atmosphere that creates Once, From Afar, and One I Want, then bring it on. I mean seriously, would you rather have From Afar or It's About Time?
For me, it's From Afar in a heartbeat. On III, each track was a surprise.
I'm not saying it was the greatest record ever, but as a first shot at a group getting together, I thought it had cool moments and real potential.
If Ed/Al hadn't given up and given in (despite that fact that it doesn't matter about sales and "if I just reach one person, it's worth it"), we'd have 3 more cd's with some cool material.
Live, it showed. Watching those III videos and listening to the '04 tour, it's like comparing a finely tuned, hungry band to a Buffet show with a drunk guitar player.
As sad as it seems, when Gary walked out, VH died. I never thought I would have said that one.

Uh Dude. "From Afar"? I don't remember how the chorus goes... oh, yeah, that's because there ain't no chorus in that song!
I'll take IAT over From Afar any time. Come on! Sam has more power in any one of his "hell yeah" than in any part of "From Afar." Even the title blows... "From Afar"...
I'd take "From Afar" over the current silence. That we could agree on. At least there'd b some EVH guitar to listen to.
From Afar is pretty high on my list of VH songs.....great tune, very different.
On the other hand, the typical VH rocker from 3, Fire in the Hole, is a piece of shit.
