Thanks to sharpedgesword for pointing this out in another thread. :thumb:

CHICKENFOOT, the new rock supergroup comprised of drummer Chad Smith (RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS), bassist Michael Anthony (ex-VAN HALEN), guitarist Joe Satriani and vocalist Sammy Hagar (ex-VAN HALEN), has announced the global release of its self-titled debut album. The CD will be made available by earMUSIC in Germany on Friday, June 5 and in the U.K. on Monday. June 8. The album will be released by Best Buy in the U.S. on Sunday, June 7.

"Chickenfoot" will be packaged in heat-sensitive artwork, which means when you put your hand on the CD inlay, photos of the band members will be revealed behind the CHICKENFOOT band logo.

"Chickenfoot" track listing:

01. Avenida Revolution
02. Soap on a Rope
03. Sexy Little Thing
04. Oh Yeah
05. Runnin' Out
06. Get It Up
07. Down the Drain
08. My Kinda Girl
09. Learning to Fall
10. Turnin' Left
11. Future in the Past

Hagar wasn't looking to form a new group in his post-VAN HALEN career. "I really wasn't looking to have a real band, but when I got involved with these guys, only a fool would say, 'No, I'm not going to do this.' The minute we started jamming it was obvious, like, 'This is something that needs to be heard.'"

A great band is nothing without a great rhythm section, and CHICKENFOOT has one of the best in the two-man team of bassist Michael Anthony and drummer Chad Smith.

As a founding member (and fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famer) of VAN HALEN, Anthony laid the bedrock for which guitar genius Eddie Van Halen could fly. More than that, he provided a signature style of background vocal that became an intrinsic part of that band. "A total fluke," the good-natured bassist humbly asserts. "I was just doing what came naturally."

Hagar sees Anthony's abilities differently. "Michael keeps the band going," he says. "Listen, he's never going to get the kind of credit he deserves — he played next to Eddie Van Halen. Hell, Jack Bruce didn't get much credit compared to Eric Clapton — that's just the nature of things. Mikey held down the fort, and he still does."

Aiding Anthony in holding down the fort is Chad Smith, drummer for the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, who have, since Smith joined the group in the late Eighties, gone from cult faves to a worldwide force. Heretofore thought of as a "funk/alternative" drummer, Smith gets to rock hard with CHICKENFOOT, and the percussion explosion he creates might come as a surprise to those who only know of his work from tracks like "Under The Bridge".

"The guy's from Detroit, for God's sake!" says Hagar. "He can play the hell out of funk, but he's a rocker. He plays hard, man. You could put one mic in a room with Chad, and you can hear all the parts of his kit — he's hard, but he's balanced. The band wouldn't exist without his groove."

The members of CHICKENFOOT admit that the band came together almost by accident, a result of jams held at Hagar's club, Cabo Wabo Cantina, in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

"We were just having fun," recalls Michael Anthony. "After Sammy and I left VAN HALEN, we'd get together with musicians, and certain people seemed to really gel. Chad came down and we got on well with him. Gradually, we started talking about doing something more serious, but we needed a guitarist. Somebody smokin' — somebody who could take us to the Promised Land."

Enter Satch, who hooked up with Hagar, Anthony and Smith and felt "an immediate connection unlike anything I'd ever experienced before." To Satriani, who had almost abandoned his lifelong dream of being a part of a "big-time rock band," here was his chance, and here were his bandmates. "After just a few songs, it became stunningly obvious that we shared an overall musical agenda," he says. "The only question was could we make a great album?"

The band answered that question last fall when they hunkered down with the illustrious producer Andy Johns at George Lucas' Skywalker Studios and knocked out a batch of songs that sets a new standard for rock music in the new millennium.

From the thunderous, ominous opening strains of "Avenida Revolution" (detailing the bloody drug wars in Tijuana, in which Hagar makes his feelings come through his skin) to the album closer, the shimmering rock ballad "Future's in the Past", "Chickenfoot" is a firebomb of a record, the likes of which we haven't heard in ages.

The band kicks and snorts their way through a passel of take-no-prisoners rockers like "Soap on a Rope", "Sexy Little Thing", "Oh Yeah" and "My Kind of Girl".

"These are the kinds of songs I could never do on my own," says Satriani. "I needed a band like this to make those songs come alive."

The band explores mature themes on songs such as "Runnin' Out", about a world stretched to the breaking point to "Learning to Fall", perhaps the most poignant love song Hagar has ever written lyrics for. As both a vocalist and songwriter, Hagar's intensity and forcefulness are on vivid display on "Chickenfoot".

"I write what comes to mind," the singer says. "I'm not bound by anything subject-wise. I'm inspired by the music. When I heard the music Joe was going for, it made me reach, it made me stretch. I think it made me sing in a way that I normally wouldn't have done. We seem to have that kind of effect on each other."

Satriani agrees. "People have this idea of what this band is about, or what Sammy Hagar is about as a lyricist and a vocalist," he says. "The thing is that we manage to get each guy to up his game in a non-confrontational way. When I play with CHICKENFOOT, I find myself wanting to give them more all the time. I don't hold anything back. I think the rest of the guys feel the same way."

That Satriani unleashes sheets of shred magna is, of course, a given, but what's interesting is, as individualistic and recognizable as his talents are — and this is true of all the players — they transform in a strange and beautiful way on "Chickenfoot".

Likewise, Anthony and Smith, channel past heroes. For Anthony it's ELECTRIC FLAG bassist Harvey Brooks. For Smith it's ZEPPELIN's John Bonham. Together, they perform something of an astonishing balancing act, dispending performances that meet at the intersection of Heavy and Nimble. This is what a rhythm section does, drives the band in forceful, creative ways. Listen to CHICKENFOOT and you'll hear what a true rhythm section sounds like.

"Chickenfoot", which is already being hailed as the most intense rock 'n' roll album since LED ZEPPELIN's classic efforts, coincides with a European tour that will consist of outdoor festivals, including Montreaux, Switzerland, and Bospop, Holland, plus various intimate indoor rock shows, including the London O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire on June 25.

Tickets for the London 02 Shepherd's Bush Empire concert go on sale at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, March 27. This will be CHICKENFOOT's only UK date on the European tour.

Alright! Way to have everything summed up in one article. I just keep getting more excited for this. :bounce: And it's nice to hear the guys say great things about each other - there's a lot to be said for good chemistry.

Really, though. I know they're supposed to toot their own horn, but when I read lines like this, I can't help but shake my head.

So much for Bitten by the Wolf being one of the track names.

But the name, Avenida Revolution just seems fuckin' AWESOME.

Those track names just SOUND like GREAT tunes. :headbang:

But time will tell. :headbang:

I'm looking forward to hearing Joe live, I am a big Satch fan. One of the best shows I've EVER seen was Satch live at the Bronco Bowl here in Dallas. It was a small venue (very small), like 200 people and the vibe in the room was amazing. :headbang:

If the article at the beginning of the thread is correct, it would seem to be a Best Buy exclusive. They may have it available through their website, as AC/DC had Black Ice through their site even though the CD was a WalMart exclusive.

The Grateful Dead recorded the bulk of their last studio album, Built To Last (http://www.deaddisc.com/disc/Built_To_Last.htm), at Skywalker Ranch back in 1989, so it's been available for recording music at least since then.

Lucas' various studios are located very close to where Sammy (and Joe, I think) live in northern California. I believe they did the initial demos and recordings there and finished up at Sammy's place. And, yeah, Skywalker Sound is fully equipped to do most kinds of recording.

The days of album releases happening on Tuesdays are drawing to a close. The entire system of music distribution is being rewritten as we speak. There isn't a set standard for how it is done now, but perhaps there will be soon. If the album is a Best Buy exclusive, it makes sense they'd want to do a release on their busiest shopping day.

I talked to a Best Buy employee today who was flown down to Anaheim for the CF gig. He said they had great energy, seemed a little nervous, and that Sammy and Mike sounded great singing together.

I confirm this to be absolutely true.

Lucas has two major studio locations, one in San Francisco (the Presidio) and the other in just over the mountains from San Rafael in Marin County. Both Sam and Joe live in Marin County as well.

However, the press release seems to be vague about where and all this actually went down. Skywalker Sound Studios are mainly used for post-production and mixing versus recording.

http://www.skysound.com/home.html

It is possible that they did some work at Studio D in Sausalito as they both have recorded there in the past and would be a step up from Sam's home studio.

A little bummed that it is coming out the first of June and also a little bummed that it is a Best Buy exclusive, but otherwise I am still amped about this project. To those of you worrying that Chickenfoot may not sell as well being a BB only release we can use G N' R as a gauge. The Foot may not have Guns legendary band status, but it has shown that they will do pr out the ying yang which something Axl will not do. Enough about them, back to the Foot! For the time being, we can listen to the 2 tracks until they take them off and release the singles. Of course, the American Children of the Foot need some tour dates as well.

I spent some time at the skywalker sound website and they have a list of everyone that has recorded there. They've have one hell of a client list...mostly symphonies and orchestras but a lot of pop, rock and blues. After reading about the studio, it's no suprise at all that they recorded there.

I just didn't know skywalker had a recording studio for anything other than scoring films and such.

Hmmm, I don't know if that amount of Schonocity would register on Broken's scale. Plus, it would be secondhand Schonocity or residual Schonocity, which aren't nearly as bad as direct Schonocity. Still, it's something of which we need to be aware, just to be on the safe side.

yes it would be residual schonocity...much like radiation at Chernobyl. It will continue to permeate and attach itself to all who visit ground zero and it decreases as you get further away. In order to know just how much they absorbed we would need to know how long its been since Journey recorded there, how long Chickenfoot was there and whether or not Schon was wearing his jean jacket at the time!

Tell us how you feel Schon!

it was probably a matter of overload. I don't think many people can survive being that close to the white hot pulsating center of Schon. It's just too powerful. They're lucky they made it out alive. The members of Journey have to have bone marrow transplants after every show.:D

I think the 2 songs are AMAZING!!! Lot's of energy, tight, great sound, & well written & recorded!!! I don't really give a shit if they're gonna be a BestBuy exclusive or not, and I don't care if they measure up to Zepplin or not!!!!!! I'm just happy that there's a BRAND NEW BAND out there that's making some KILLER FUCKING MUSIC!!! PERIOD!!! I think that CHICKENFOOT has really high energy, and if the 2 songs are any indication of what the rest of the album will sound like, then I can't fucking wait!!! I might even go out & BUY the album instead of getting it off of one of the sharing sites!!! lol... I already put both songs on my Ipod!!! hahaha... I will buy this album when it's out though! I think they just might have something here, like no band has had in quite some time now!!!

Wow.

Well, I don't know quite what to think of the band's self-promotion when there are a couple of doozies in there.

1. Sammy says he "wasn't looking to be in a new band". Bullsh!T. Sammy's been trying to do that since Planet Us. Sammy's been working hard for a band that could compete with Van Halen. Is this it? I don't know. But don't play us dumb Sammy, we know better. It would look a whole lot more honest to say, "I've been working hard on making a new group that could compete with my past and add a new edge to the future" or something like that. This Chickenfoot thing has been two years in the making. At least.

2. Mike says he and Sammy quit Van Halen. Bullsh!T again. Maybe Sammy quit. But all evidence tends to show that Ed fired both Mike and Sammy. Or at least began VH activity without inviting Mike and Sammy back. Mike has played dumb and indicated that he would still love to play with VH if they called him. No where previously does he EVER state that he QUIT VH. What's the story behind that, Mikey? If this is true, that what about all your previous interviews? Why did you quit? Did you quit because they did a tour without you? Tell the truth. They canned you and you are looking to do VH one better and rock their asses off.

Now let's look at the proof in the pudding. Those titles for songs look really lame-ass. BUT - Satriani might save the day and pull out some really sweet songs.

I guess we'll see.

The best result will probably be a kick in Eddie's ass who previously with Van Hagar, seemed to only put out albums around the same time DLR put out an album.

Again, we'll see.

Chickenfoot is an attempt to COMPETE with Van Halen???

Last time I checked: When basketball was being played....two TEAMS needed to be on the court. When hockey was being played....two TEAMS needed to be on the ice.

Van Halen is a non entity until they release NEW music. There is no competition for Chickenfoot.

So you think that this is all Sammy and Mike's plan to rival Van Halen? Not just to be in a rock band which is what these guys have been doing for decades?

I also find it laughable that you say Van Hagar only seemed to put out albums when dlr did.

DLR's solo career sucked ass and Van Halen went on to better things.

KU and VH forever!!
03.30.09, 09:26 AM
I agree with what everyone is saying about the infamous aforementioned post. Until VH does do anything with new music, then Chickenfoot is for now kicking their ass in that department. VH only released albums when DLR did?? WTF!?! Probably the other way around. I think Sammy put this group together for Michael Anthony's sake for more than anything, if it sounds like VH well then cest la vie. To my ears Chad and Joe maybe are equals to the VH brothers if not better than they are in some regards. If the 2 non-single songs that we are listening to are any indication of what we are in store for then this ought to be a big time release.

I will add to that, It is basically psychological, like seperation anxiety, but they don't realize it, This is all reverb effect of the implosion of the van halen brothers. The discontent has had no where to go . These are comparisons clearly out of desperation. How long did the fans of the old shit really think that because of one dis functional person that the rest of the music community ( including Sam and mike ) is going to sit around with their thumb up their arsses !! Waiting for things to happen is a sign of weakness. Chickenfoot is a sign of strength. I am diggin' the direction of this band. :thumb:

:funny: :spit:

Competition with Van Halen, that's so damn funny. You can't play a baseball game until the batter steps into the box. If the batter doesn't step in, chances are the team who actually took the time to dress, run out to the field (in Mitch's case, the turf :D), and take their positions are left to themselves until someone steps up to the plate.

Well, right now Chickenfoot is on the mound ready to throw the first pitch, and Van Halen are still chewing tobacco and spitting sunflower seeds in the dugout.

Gah, I LOVE tying in sports to my music. Like when Chip Caray would make Rush references in his Cubs broadcasts five years ago :D

Chickenfoot will not be competing with Van Halen until Van Halen releases an album, and even then I don't expect Chickenfoot to "compete" with VH. If we're going to compare by most recent releases, Chickenfoot's two newest songs are better than the 15 Van Halen has released the past eleven years, hands down. Tours can't be compared either, because after the first show CF will have played about seven more new songs than VH has on their last two tours...combined. Essentially, one is a new band, the other is a nostalgia act.

But there's no reason to compare, it's senseless. And the VH clowns are going to lose, because nobody can logically say CF will compete with a VH album released 20 years ago. It just doesn't make sense. That's like comparing Dr. Feelgood with Are You Experienced?

Chickenfoot is about four guys having fun and making music with their time. Satch always wanted to be in a band, Mikey's in another big-time project, Chad Smith needed to occupy his post Chili Peppers outlet into a different style, and we know Sam is open to just about anything.

Van Halen currently is a business. Wolf is just a kid who was brought in to replace Mike solely because he's Ed's kid and nothing else (shredding bassist my ass, where was his solo? I have no ill will towards Wolf, but towards pops), Dave is on a leash and sold out pretty much his entire persona to the Van Halens, and Ed is just cruising along, pimping his gear, saying music is in the future, a song we've ALL heard before. Amidst this circus, Al is still the coolest motherfucker alive in my book.

I rest my case.

Roth promised that the reunited Van Halen would not disappoint. "The bar is set unbelievably high," he said. "We know what your expectations are. Are you prepared for it to be better than it ever f***ing was?"

Roth said, "Saving the world is Bono's job. We just want to save a hundred cities; then we want to save Europe; then I want to talk to you about Hong Kong. Then we make an album; lots of big dreams here, lots of ambitions."
