About half of the music I listen to are Canadian bands. Here are some of my favorites...

LEE AARON- I love Lee!!! She has two albums Can't Stand The Heat and Bodytalk that are great from start to finish! She's great looking too!http://216.10.25.192/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

KIM MITCHELL- He rocks! He has so many great songs it's incredible! He's a really talented guitar player also.

GLASS TIGER- A great band! The Thin Red Line is my favorite song by them.

SHANIA TWAIN- She needs to make a new album. She is still releasing singles from '97?!

RUSH- Roll The Bones is one of my all time favorite songs.

GOWAN- I love Gowan!!! I heard he's singing for Styx now.

COLIN JAMES- I saw him live with his Little Big Band and it was great! They are much better than Brian Seltzer.

ALANNAH MYLES- Her first album is awesome!!!

WIDE MOUTH MASON- IMO the best new rock band.

TRIUMPH- Magic Power is great. Rik is a good guitar player.

LOVERBOY- They had some good songs, I like Working For The Weekend the best!

BRYAN ADAMS- He has some songs I really dig, my favorite is Back To You.

SASS JORDAN- She wrote some good songs, VH thought about getting her as a Lead Singer. I like Lee and Alannah better though.

COREY HART- I like Tell Me and Black Cloud Rain.

SKID ROW- Bach is Canadian, and I think they are nothing without him.

I like Bryan Adams - except his first album which has gotta be the worst debut album by anyone who went on to stardom that was ever recorded. I don't have his more recent stuff, and Waking Up The Neighbours could've been pared down, but I really like his stuff before that - except of course for that first album!

I liked Loverboy back in their day, but even their original stuff doesn't do it for me like it used to. Still like a lot of the big hits, though.

I like Heart, don't have any of their stuff, but I like to hear them on the radio - are they from Vancouver, BC or Vancouver, WA? If they're from WA, well, nevermind!

FORD
07.15.00, 08:21 AM
Heart is actually from Bellevue WA, but played a lot of their early gigs (and recorded their first 2 albums) in Vancouver BC.

Bryan Adams?? What has that guy done in the last 10 years that wasn't pathetically sappy??

Being a native of the Pacific Northwest, I will admit to owning Loverboy's first 2 albums, but after that they went way down hill.

Rush immediatly comes to mind, they are without doubt some of the most talented musicians out there. It's a shame they'll most likely never get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. They deserve it.

I like Our Lady Peace and Triumph. They really kicked ass when Rik was in the band and it's a damn shame that he decided to split. They released another album after Rik's departure titled "Edge Of Excess" which featured Gil Moore on vocals. I thought the album was pretty good.

Of course if I mention them to anyone around here (Arizona), no one knows who I am talking about.

I really dig Kim's latest album, 'Kimosabe'.

You know speaking of Rush (Im a huge fan) they are scheduled to go back into the studio this October. Its been awhile since the passing of Mr. Pearts Wife and Daughter but from what I have read....He is ready and so is the rest of the band. This would be a dream come true for me....a Van Halen and Rush Album due at the same time!! YIPPEEEE!

I also saw Wide Mouth Mason this year, they played a few blocks from where I live, and I saw Kim Mitchell play with Allanah Myles last November.

I am always surprised that The Tragically Hip never made it big south of the border. These guys have guitar grooves that move, baby!! IMO, one of the best Canadian bands ever. One of the newer Canadian acts that I enjoy is Nickelback. They have a fresh new sound. My advice to most VH fans is check the Hip out. Great bandhttp://216.10.25.192/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

Geddy Lee getting on your nerves? Why? Is it because he sings, plays bass, taurus pedals, synthesizers, and trips all the other midi samplers and triggers, all at the same time? Not taking anything away from Mike Anthony, but Geddy Lee is the baddest bass player on the planet.
Listen to "Different Stages" (1998 Live album) and see if you don't like his vocals also. Geddy Lee has talent just dripping from him. This isn't a slam towards anyone, but I'd really like to know the reason behind that statement.

April Wine, Jerry Mercer has these hhuge pipes and puts them to good use on the skins. Caught the band live at the Montral Forum in the mid-80s and they really were good.

Had tickets to see 'em at this tiny joint in Tempoe, AZ a couple of yeasrs ago but they never made it, bus broke down or somethin' like that :irked:

Cory Hart's lead guitarist was awesome, in the liner notes of his debut album it listed the name of the guitarist as Erik Clapton. It's not Slowhand is it? I remeber Hart opened for AW and surpringly the "Boy in a Box" was actually pretty good.

Then again it was the mid-80s

Currently I like the Barenaked Ladies. They are fun! There's one song that I really like and when I finally learned all the words, I realized that it is about masturbation! LOL "I'm the "me" in mongamy..."

I used to love Bryan Adams back in the 80s, but he is just SO sappy now. It's a sad, sad, thing. I also liked Glass Tiger back then.

I got into Our Lady Peace for a while, after they opened for Van Halen. I love the song "Naveed." I like how their drum sound is so prominent. Makes them easy to identify.

If you have not heard these guys then you need to, they rock!

I've never been a fan of the Hip. They are just a good, average bar band, and I need more than that from the bands I like.

I really like some of the indie scene bands in Canada, like Grand Theft Bus and The Jimmy Swift Band. And of course there's always Rush.

I started out reading this thread and i saw that you dig wide mouthmason alot. I think they are cool to. I don't know if you know this but Gordie Johnson, the singer, guitar player, from BIG SUGAR, produced Wide Mouth MAson's last album.

Anyway I was at a Big Sugar Concert and for the Encore Gordie Brought out Shaun Verultte, the singer from WMM(last name?) and they played a couple tunes together and then had this KICK ASS guitar war for about 10 min. Both of these guys can play some mean guitar.

You should check out Big sugars cover of "Let it Ride". It kicks.

Then the kicker is i get to the end of this thread and then you say your new favorite canadian band is Thornley, and the whole time i reading this i'm wonderomg if anyone has heard of Thornley yet.

They are Bar far my favorite( new) Canadian band right now. They have been touring up here in the cold north pretty heavily and I've seen them twice in the last six months at 1000 person venues. Ian Thornley is an amazing song writer and singer.

Check out Big Wreck- The Pleasure and the Greed, A wicked album as well.

Nickelback (Dispite bad song writting, these guys have done good for themselves and put on an amazing live show)

Rush (I just never get sick of these guys.)

3 Days Grace (I got hooked on one of their songs that wasn't a single called "Wake Up" that the girlfriend introduced to me and I've seen them 3 times since then. Great live act. And, like Nickelback, despite some cheesy "pissed off only" lyrics, these guys are nice guys and down to earth and making it on their own.)

Big Sugar ("Brothers and Sisters are You Ready?") (Starting with Nicotina, these guys rock! I've seen them twice in concert and they blew me away everytime. A shame that they aren't doing it anymore.)

Grady (Gordie Johnsons (Big Sugar) new band) I saw these guys open for 3 Days Grace last month and man do these guys smoke. Same unique style of guitar playing from Johnson, and mixed in with Chris Layton's (Stevie Ray Vaughn/Double Trouble) ryhthm, it's all good. Solid blues band.

I like a lot of Canadian bands (being Canadian and ell eh!) particularly a lot of the bands from the 70's and 80's. To me Trooper is still a great Canadian band that has a lot of great songs. They are still touring and sound exactly like they did back in the 70's. I love playing Boys In the Bright White Sports Car whenever I pick up the guitar.

I had to laugh when I saw Killer Dwarfs on here. We Stand Alone and Keep the Spirit Alive are two songs I still listen to and they show up on a lot of my mixed CD's. Classic stuff. Do you remember the video for Keep the Spirit Alive where they were making their own albums at home? They were using a plunger to stick the album label on. Classic.

Rush is one of my all time favorite bands. I remember being a freshman in high school and getting home before my brother. I would put on Rush albums and play to them on his drum set which was set up like Neil's. I had the little headphones that could fit in my ear with the military type of noise suppressing headphones over it so I could hear the music and play until my brother got home from school. When he got home, I would then grab my guitar and we would jam out to old Rush like Bastille Day, and some Priest, Maiden, and of course VH.

Bryan Adams before he went sappy and made the song for Robin Hood. Bryan Adams' career went directly into the shitter as soon as that song came out in my opinion. Yes, it was a hit, but no redblooded rocker had any respect for him after that. Goddamn prom music pussy ass...

Thornley in concert are great. They pretty much play the thornley songs to the tee, so no guitar solos on the Thornley tunes anyway. But, the drummer, and guitar player( ian thonley), will take 10-15 minute solo spots each. The drummer was actually taking his toms off his kit, spinning them and walking around stage pumping up the crowd during his solo, all the while keeping a beat going on the tom.

Ian is a very competant and creative guitar player, he'll get into these grooves on his guitar during his solo spot and just jam with himself. also after hearing him play it is clear that he did alot of the guitar solo's with Big Wreck.
They always play a few Big Wreck tunes during their concert to. The crowd loves these. one last thing when they came out for their encore they did this pink floyd jam and played the first few minutes of the wall and went off into their own jam. WICKED!

I can't wait to hear their next CD.(with guitar solo's) i have this feeling that they are saving it for the next album. Anyway i like the tunes: So far so good, easy comes, and clever, and it all comes out in the wash.

if you have a chance check out Big Wreck- The pleasure and the Greed

Here's Gordie Johnson describing the new sound:

CRR: The sound of Grady has been described as being equal parts Gospel Revival and Satanic Ritual and you mentioned recently that this band was a chance for you to take the music in a brand new direction away from what you’ve done in the past, but to me it’s almost the opposite in the sense that Grady sounds like it’s a return to the roots, would you say that’s a fair statement?

Gordie: Yeah kind of. It’s a lot heavier than it used to be in Big Sugar. It’s louder than Big Sugar was in some ways.

CRR: Really?

Gordie: I think that everyone makes the assumption that as you get another year older, you get another year mellower and I’ve already read a lot of press on the new project that says it’s a lot bluesier, a lot rootsier and a lot mellower and I’m like "What?" that’s obviously coming from someone who hasn’t heard it. It’s actually more metal than Big Sugar was. [laughing] For me it’s not a complete left turn, I’m still playing guitar and singing and writing the songs so it does bear some resemblance obviously, but there’s no reggae and it’s not as poppy as Big Sugar ever was. It combines more of a primitive blues with modern metal.
