Lindros trade from Quebec to the Flyers.

In exchange for Lindros, the Nordiques received Peter Forsberg, Steve Duschene, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci, Ron Hextall, Chris Simon, Philly’s first-round pick in 1993 and 1994, and $15 million in cash, just to make sure the deal was even. :(

Detroit Tigers singing Magglio Ordonez to a 5-year 75 millon dollar contract. He's a fuckin lemon.

Oh, and the Payrod deal with Texas 250 million over 10 years.

One thing is for sure, I want Scott Boras negotiating for my next annual review.

Good topic. :thumb:

Off the top of my head, in no particular order, here are some of the best/worst depending on which side you're on - Boston trading Bagwell for Larry Anderson; Detroit trading John Smoltz for Doyle Alexander; LA trading Shaq for a collection of stiffs; Portland picking Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan; whoever it was who traded Frank Robinson to the Orioles; Colorado's contracts to Mike Hampton and the other pitcher whose name escapes me but who just had the last year of his deal voided for consorting with a prostitute; Rangers signing Chan Ho Park; Dodgers signing Darren Dreifort; Angels signing Vlad (obviously a good deal); Yankees' contract for Jeter (bad); Payrod's Texas deal (I agree wholeheartedly with Pabs).

Can't believe I left out the Mariners, who have made a number of huge contract blunders in recent years, including fat meaty contracts to aging losers such as Jeff Cirillo, Rich Aurilia, and Scott Spiezio.

Worst contract? How about Denny Neagle's last deal with the Rockies? Or Mike Hampton's $120 million deal with the Rockies. (The Rockies love to give out bad contracts, don't they?)

The worst of all:

Texas giving A-Rod a 10 year, $252 million contract. No man is worth $25 million a year.

Um...team moves - Bengals and Jets drafting Eddie Brown and Al Toon...before Jerry Rice.

Great choice. I'm sure there were a number of QBs picked before Montana (3rd round), so we could add that too. And speaking of NFL drafts, how about Tom Brady in round 6? Or the year the Steelers picked four (FOUR!) Hall of Famers in one draft?

Back to baseball, trading Varitek and Lowe for Heathcliff Slocumb is a classic, all-time kind of bad trade. :D

Worst move ever was Juan Gonzalez turning down something like $140 million from the Detroit Tigers. How about the contract Grant Hill got from Orlando?

The Hershel Walker deal,enough said.

This trade resulted in three Super Bowl championships for the Dallas Cowboys, so I think this is definately one of the top five.

The Celtics drafting of Len Bias didn't work out too well. And that was a hgih draft pick they earned through a trade of some sort.

Dan Duquette, former general manager of the Red Sox, stating that Roger Clemens was in the "twighlight" of his career in 1996.

Portland picking Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan

And all that because the Jail Blazers already had Clyde Drexler. Thank you very much. :D There is a good chance the Bulls would have taken Hakeem if Houston didn't.

Sticking to the Bulls, I must add that we gave Seattle Olden Polynice for Scottie Pippen.

Also, we gave San Antonio Will Perdue for Dennis Rodman.

Then.....Reinsdorf and Krause flushed it down the shitter after 1998.

And all that because the Jail Blazers already had Clyde Drexler.

Jordan was our biggest fuck up ever. Number 2 was Jermain Oneal to Indiana for Dale Davis. Number three was paying Sean Kemp 50 trillion dollars to get fat and snort cocaine.....which is by the way, very hard to do at the same time!!

The Browns number one picks. Those were some of the worst busts in sports history.

Also picking William Green over Clinton Portis. :{

04.22.05, 05:33 PM
Just a couple of corrections, the Chargers didn't draft Leaf over Manning, Manning was 1 and Leaf 2. Also, the Packers didn't draft Mandarich over Aikman, Aikman was the number 1 overall selection. That being said, those were two pretty god damn bad picks. As a matter of fact, the top of the 1989 draft went like this:
1. Aikman--future Hall of Famer
2. Mandarich--future pituitary gland tumor
3. B. Sanders--Hall of Famer
4. D. Thomas--possible Hall of famer
5. D. Sanders-future Hall of famer

Of course, I think the worst draft move of all was the Jets taking K. O'Brien one pick before Marino. Actually, you could start an entire thread devoted to Jets' busts. :D

The Dodgers making Kevin Brown the first $100 million man. I'll never forget that, especially the shelling the Padres gave him in his first outing against them. :D

Brett
04.22.05, 09:41 PM
The Kevin Brown deal was ridiculous, although when he was healthy, he actually pitched well. He's a douche.

Well the Lakers trading Shaq and getting stuck with paying Brian Grant $29 million over the next two years wasn't exactly a brilliant move. Although with Shaq's salary, it was hard to find any takers. Nobody wanted to give up their franchises for him.

Trading Vlade Divac to Charlotte for Kobe's draft rights worked out well though. :)

The Canadines traded Mark Recchi to the Flyers for Karl Dykhauis and a pick I think. They were also the team that traded Eric Desjardins and John LeClair to the Flyers. Both went on to become All-Stars, and are still big time Flyers on the team.

One of the worse deals in Philadelphia history I'm thinkin of right now, was the Flyers signing Chris Gratton to a long term deal. I believe the deal was for 7 years, worth about 70 million dollars. Chris lasted about two years in Philly, and the Flyers were left paying his contract off for the remainding years.

If the A-Rod deal is up there, then the Manny deal is too, but that's hard to rank among the worst, since they've both performed to MVP type levels.

Pitino having to renounce the rights to 7 or 8 players because he misunderstood the salary cap rules, in order to sign...Travis fucking Knight. Those players included Rick Fox and David Wesley, who could play just a little. Can't remember who else, but it basically devastated the Celtics for years.

Mets trading Dykstra for Jaun Samuel.

Duquette allowing Mo Vaughn to walk, although Mo never did do much after, got hurt pretty quick.

Best? Obviously, some of these trade moves are the worst for one side, best for the other.

Jerry West trading for Kobe would be one that jumps out.

But as far as free agent signings or convincing a team to make a trade for a player about to go into free agency:

Curt Schilling to the Red Sox
Pedro to the Red Sox (there you go Duquette)
Shaq to the Lakers - big money, but it gave them how many titles?
Tom Brady in the 6th round
Keeping the ball in Brady's hands despite Bledsoe getting healthy

"At the end of the 1976 season, Orr's contract was over and the Boston Bruins needed to renew it. The Bruins offered Orr a lucrative contract, including over 18% ownership in the Bruins organization. However, Eagleson, who by this time was doubling as Orr's agent and executive director of the NHLPA, falsely told Orr that the Chicago Black Hawks had a better deal, something that was not revealed for a number of years. It later emerged that Eagleson had very good relations with Black Hawks owner Bill Wirtz, and frequently acted contrary to the interests of his clients in favor of teams whose management he favored.

Orr subsequently signed with Chicago, but his injuries rendered him too severely hurt to play effectively, and, after playing in only 26 games over the next three seasons, retired in 1979. Famously, he never cashed a Chicago pay check, stating that he was paid to play hockey and would not accept a salary if he wasn't playing."
