What is the last thing he does in his drum solo? Is that a "paradiddle" that starts out mega slow then reaches mega fast while the stage is rising? Example ... LWAN
Also I have always heard that when he starts
to get faster and faster, that he uses some sort of pedal? Like on LWAN it seems to me that he turns a pedal on right before he starts getting faster.
Hey Drummers?, ... help me out!http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

NB, I think he just starts playing a single stroke roll. Just R-L-R-L. Then as he gets much faster, I think he starts playing a double stroke roll, R-R-L-L. Just a guess. Maybe paradiddle can back me up.http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

What about a pedal? Think he uses one to enhance the speed since their electronic drums? Unless he's using a floor tom then it wouldn't be electronic but still.
I think he does but I wonder what kind of pedal it is?
Is that possible with drums?

On LWAN Alex uses a Simmons electronic pad and just does a regular single stroke buzz roll I believe, but the effects processor on the pad turns this into a super fast sounding trick...from RHRN onwards, he does a normal buzz roll on his snare and creates the super fast roll under this by alternating kicks on his bass drums and getting faster and faster....
i think LOL

Great topic! I've always wanted to know this. My jaw just hits the ground everytime I hear it. BTW, what is he doing at the beginning of Hot for Teacher?

This is exactly how he does it. The double stroke is very common, and looks and sounds very fast. I practice doing double strokes on a pillow, that way I have no 'bounce' assisting my speed. If you can do that, then when you apply it to the drum you're flyin!

Thanks for backing me up paradiddle. I knew it would take another drummer to do it.http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif Practicing on a pillow is definately one of the best ways to built writs and finger speed.

OK - so the double stroke theory explains it - partially, but there is no way a human being can play as fast as you hear on the old vids - check out LWAN and the US Fest or Largo, MD 1982 - it is like a machine gun. Now Al is GREAT, AWESOME, but no one is that fast or good - its inhuman...you can clearly hear that it is an electronic pad he is doing his single and then double strokes on, but then it gets to the point of being like a machine gun - that is triggered but the electric pad. Nowadays he just does the double stroke roll on his snare and adds the bass drums and toms to creat his effect. http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif
Just my own theory thas all! VH 2001!
