Man, I've been looking for that backstage video (at the end of the clip with Ed playing "Elephant" and "Horse") forever! I had it on tape years ago when it first aired originally before it was dumped into the "Rockumentary", but haven't seen it since 1986. Thanks for posting, and if you have more of it I'd love to see.

I've never seen that before.
It's great to see and listen to a fully coherent Eddie.....compare that with what we saw during the 2004 Reunion. It's like night and day.

His eyes look pretty glazed- he's stoned in those clips I think.

Yep remember that from late 80's when Ed said "Sammy just told me recently - that he told his wife - that when he found out that Dave was leaving the band - he said, "'I betcha these guys are gonna call me'".
Ed's very delicate on the Dave issue at the startup of that rockumentary.
Do ya think Ed's PR ways have changed a little since then???
I remember parts of that from MTV's Van Halen Unleashed special which I still have a real ratty copy of on VHS. But there were portions of that clip that didn't make it on there. I wonder what else is out there from this time period. It's funny 'cause I actually re-watched that not too long ago during a fit of nostalgia. Cool find!
As a side note, during that same fit of nostalgia I re-watched Live Without a Net as well and something hit me that never had before. Go with me here. Van Halen replaces hugely popular frontman David Lee Roth with Sammy Hagar which was a proposition many in the industry thought would fail. And rather than sell out to those fears they open the set with a Sammy Hagar solo song, play another later in the set plus a Zep cover, and play a huge portion of the new album under Hagar limiting the DLR songs to the standards Jump, Panama, and ATBL. That's balls! Not to mention that it worked as the band continued to have a very successful run under Hagar no matter which side of the lead singer debate you find yourself on. Anyway, just wanted to share that thought.

that was refreshing.
I have the urge to watch LWAN again.
I'm sure Ed, Al, and Sam don't even remember that thing being filmed. But after watching this, I think that somebody should just go up to Ed, Sam, and Alex and say, "May I just have two minutes of your time?" Then play this video for them. And maybe then they might realize that the band Van Halen is beyond individual, personal, stupid arguments and money... its about the music and the love that these guys once had, and I still believe they have for one another.
While I love watching stuff like this... I hate it also.

Thanks for sharing. I have that in VHS somewhere at home.
I never liked that bad blood between Diamond Dave and Alex/Eddie/Mike. Maybe it's just myself... .

There's an issue of the Rolling Stone I have somewhere, from 1986, where they interview Sammy. It was around time of the 5150 tour and I remember Sammy saying something like he was too shy to play Panama (I cant remember if this is the only song singled out or if it was all of the DLR era) because he was afraid he'd screw it up. He had the audience sing it for the first few shows.
EDIT: Here's the cover of the mag they were in. This has the article I'm thinking of...http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a296/Fiftyonefifty/PO76B.jpg

I just watched Unleased the other day, downloaded it and let it play....man it's hard to believe that something that was so good could go sooooo bad. Ray daniels must have really did a number on Ed cause he''s like a totally different person these days...well maybe it was not all Ray but I'm sure he had alot to do with the initial trouble...
I always loved thier cover of Addidcted to Love..wonder if they ever recorded it in the sutdio, that would be cool to hear...
That was great!! It's nice to relive that special time in the band's history.

Same here. Had the whole special on tape (Beta to be exact...that should tell you how long ago it was) and have no idea what happened to it.
There's a lot more interview stuff...Ed talking about getting the idea about Sammy from Claudio, a little more backstage action (the "Addicted to Love" jam) and Alex getting a Bocephus cap, to which he replies, "Bun of a Sitch!".

"Bun of a Sitch....a Bocephus hat...this hat gives you an entirely different way of how you look at things" Then one of the funniest moments "Bocephus Rules...and Knows all"
anyone got that Hank Jr. video with the VH boys...I'd love to see it on U-Tube...

Sammy's head/hair were wider than his shoulders. He's a little dude...with a big voice and tons of hyperactive energy.

I remember some of those interview clips were from another Rockumentary when 5150 came out (or sometime on that tour). I remember watching it w/ my Dad... It didn't strike me then, but Eddie looks like he's pretty plastered in most of those. No big suprise, just something I didn't catch on to when I was 15.

I still don't understand why there are so many that hate Sammy. If your choice is no VH, VH with All-Stars, or VH with Sammy then the choice is pretty obvious. Sammy was as good a replacement as they could have found. Love the guy.

Theres multiple versions of that.Theres the 5150 era "Unleashed" and then they used some of that on the MOR era special.I've got a tape of unused footage somewhere...I need to learn how to do the youtube thing...

It always baffles me when Eddie does those "Elephant"'s and "Horse"'s. How does he do that? Does anyone know?
