Alex had 5 or 6 bass drums. Did all of them work and did he use all of them. Or were they just for looks?

YES!http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif They all worked. Most of the time, Alex goes overboard with the huge kits, but it's all for looks. At least he hasn't gone upside-down like rapper Tommy Lee. I've officially declassified Tommy from "rocker" to "rapper", hehehehttp://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gifhttp://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif Rock on my Van Halen brothas!

Although Alex's kits had a lot of drums for show, the bass drums were meant to get a bigger sound by supplying a rubber hose to get the effect of the other bass drum it was connected to. I guess it did'nt work all that well, but it looked cool. I actually got to see the fair warning tour kit on display at the guitar center in Hollywood a few years back. It was a strange kit. Whoever set it up must have been retarded. It was all wrong. It still kicked ass though, kind of like visiting some kind of holy grail. I used to keep a poster of alex on my wall when I was a kid and he was playing that kit.

I want to make an archive of alex's drum kits.

Any suggestions on where I can find photos/pictures?

Hey Jerel, I talked to a Ludwig endorsee rep out at a Los Angeles vintage drum show about A year and a half ago and he said that he deals with getting Alex his drumsets. He told me that they were stored in some storage facility in LA somewhere and that someone in the VH camp was working on setting up all the kits one by one and photgraphing them for records. I don't know if anything has actually been done or not. One thing he said that saddened me was that I guess Alex isn't real sentimental when it comes to that stuff, and some of the kits are in pretty sad disarray. Being a drum collector myself, I love the silver sparkle set that he used on the first tour, and inside the album jacket for VHII. Unfortunatately he said that that set was in pretty bad shape.
