Hey all - I know we've had Alex drum gear discussions before. But I was just curious if anyone has any thought or has used the types of sticks Alex has over the years...he started out with Regal Tip 3S sticks. HUGE, almost marching sticks, but they have a great feel, - be careful though, if not tight enough, head will dent LOL. Then in 1990 he switched to his Regal Tip Alex Van Halen models, a little longer, but like a 5A diameter. I peraonlyl dont think they bring out much sound from my drums - dont know how Al used em. And finally, he now uses 16" double butt Power Rock sticks along with his signature models. These are better proportioned I think and get a full sound. ANy one else here have thoughts?

Good topic. I love Alex's sound and hope the new album sounds like "Can't Get This Stuff No More". You should have your band tone down. Bass players especially get loud. Try "Deer Women" to loosen things up baby.

Actually, I had a question to pose regarding this very thing. I hope someone here can at least point me in the direction of a reliable answer.

Back in 1991, I went to the "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" tour when it came to Little Rock, Arkansas. It was sold out and I loved the concert. At the time, my grandfather was a local lighting engineer for the arena where Van Halen played. During a practice session, he spoke to Alex and told him that I played drums a bit and that I loved Van Halen. My grandfather told me that Alex reached into his stage box and took out a pair of sticks and handed them over. He (Alex) said to give them to me and to tell me that he hopes I enjoy the concert. I still have them, as well as the ticket stub, from that night.

I have recently become curious as to the possible value of these sticks, citing the fact that they are Regal Tip "double butted" sticks. According to a reply email that I received from the Regal Tip website, they never were available for sale to the general public. They are about 16" long (like you said) and both sticks seem to have some kind of dark material that has been inserted into one end of each stick. I'm not sure if this is a weight or what. Both are in excellent condition. Any ideas as to their value or who might be able to give me an accurate appraisal?

...Keep 'em.. As far as value, theyre worth what someone is willing to pay.I have a pair of the double butted sticks I got from a former WB employee.The black stuff is Easton stick tape.They are worth far more to you as a memory that someone will probably pay...but I'd say around $40-50 with proper documentation.The double butts were never sold to the public,which is how you know they're really from Al.

Does anyone have a picture of the "double butted" stick? Im really curious as to how they look. Please, if anyone has a picture of this, please post it. Its greatly appreciated. Thanks! :thumb:

Obviously the heavier sticks bring out the resonance of the drums, but the lighter ones allow you to finesse a bit more. Its a matter of finding a balance that suits your style and sound.
