View Full Version : ALAE kicks ass!!!
um, see subject. 'nuff said.
i know that everyone's gonna go on about how it isn't nearly as good as the van halen stuff he did. well, duh. smilies/wink.gif
but this album is very cool. some songs don't appeal to me, but the mass of the songs are very cool, and steven becker is an amazing guitarist. it's a shame about what happened to him. smilies/frown.gif

I think that album is up to the high standards of his Van Halen albums. Most people will think that's nuts, but than again most people either haven't heard ALAE, or never really gave it a chance. There's too many folks who just blindly think that Dave's best solo work was with Vai.
ALAE had everything. Great music, lyrics, feel, and depth. I'm willing to bet there are more of Dave's screams on that album than any other, and they sound good!
Dave had struggled to find the right mix of people up to that point. While the Yankee Rose band was full of great musicians, that didn't make it the best sounding band. ALAE had the right balance. Also the right producer. Bob Rock knew just how to get the best out of Dave.
It's too bad the launch of that album was done at the worst sort of time. The video for ALAE was great (the last of the Picasso brothers smilies/frown.gif) but MTV wouldn't play it because of the midgets in blackface.
Speaking of that video, does anyone have the sound to it in MP3? I love that version of the song.
Best of all--for those of you that don't have it--there's a link on Dave's web page where you can get ALAE for $5. That'll be the best $5 you spend on music this year.

holy shit. i honestly don't know why i screwed that one up.
i think the hot weather has gotten to me, i've been acting pretty dumb lately. smilies/wink.gif
I really liked ALAE when it came out but I really enjoy the album more now. Jason Becker is unbelievable on guitar. I don't know why this album didn't do as well as it did. Take another listen, it'll surprise you.

To be honest, there are times I think that ALAE is BETTER than EEAS!! smilies/eek.gif I know to some that might be blasphemy, but I really think that. ALAE is one of those "diamond in the roughs" (no pun intended smilies/biggrin.gif ). I think if it hadn't gotten caught up in the whole "death to 80's music" wave when it was released and people took it for what it was, it could have been a much more well-received disc.
It's easily Dave's strongest solo album. All the guitar and instrumental aerobics are shed and the songs are the key. And the production is good and thick, not thin like EEAS or just plain bad like Skyscraper.

When it shows up, crank the volume up before you push play. A big grin is assured! smilies/smile.gif

I really enjoy ALAE...The only thing that bothers me is in "Last Call" where Dave misses the screams. It just sounds bad, but other than that, it's a fantastic album. The production is excellent and so is the band. It's great from beginning to end!
