Which is in your humble opinion people, the best album, 5150 or VH3 ?

this thread is gonna get moved to Albums or Opinions.
anyway, 5150 wins, hands down. it was a band effort, end of story.
I gotta go with 5150 here, and I think most people will agree. Better songs, better sound. 5150 is a great album, which was badly needed after Dave leaving.
I'm trying not to laugh when I answer this question. 5150 all the way. Album really rocks, he can hear Mike's vocals, Ed isn't singing and the production is so much better.

Lets see now, maybe VH's best album versus maybe VH's worst album. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif I am going to go out on a limb http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/rolleyes.gif and dare I say.... 5150.

No comparison - 5150 rocks I can listen to the entire album and frequently do.
VHIII - Well I pretty much bought it the day it came out and had not even heard a song from it. I paid like $30 bucks for it, it was the one that came with all the picks and the hard case. Driving home from Tower I remember thinking what the hell is this??? There are really only a couple of songs I like off the album. It doesnt make it into the CD player that often.

and thats about what its worth
Overall, as compared to previous VH albums, i was disappointed with VH3...although, there were some interesting ideas on it, definitely a departure for the band in some ways (ex. Once, and Ed singing lead)...5150 just rocks, has some great lasting tunes on it...i still remember blasting 'Summer Nights' when cruising down the Jersey shore

You can't be serious. I'm starting to get worried. 5150 of course!
5150 kills III. Actually most any old album kills III. Sorry if I offend anyone, but III sucks.

I don't think VH3 can compete with any albums (except for Diver Down, maybe). 5150 was a great album, Sammy's first with VH, and it was great.

I was not implying 5150 was bad.
In fact, 5150 is probably the only Van Hagar album I can really enjoy from start to finish, and has the catchiest songs.
My intention was to compare Sammy's best album with Van Halen with Gary Cherone's best album with Van Halen. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/wink.gif
I'm sure Gary Cherone left Van Halen because he was embarrassed of his failure.

5150 without a doubt. I'd love to see that whole album re-mastered. Another thing, I wish Ed could travel back in time and use the live effects he used on BOBW for the album version. It absolutely rocked live, but it just didn't seem as cool on the album (although it still rocked, just to a lesser degree...) http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

VH3 for me. I love Gary's voice on anything he does, his lyrics, the music everything on that record is so deep and different from anything Van Halen has done in the past. This is an old thread I probably have already responded to it. But anyway,5150 is friggin' awesome too! I love every record by Van Halen like each record is a parent. They all have special meaning to me and I could never say anything poor about any. But VH3 makes me happy,"Once"...wow! So good to me. I am happy with it,I wish Gary sounded a little more like he did with Extreme on it but either way. I love them both equally.

That speaks for itself. I actually like III better, the electronic drums and the bottom end of 5150 sounded weak and the keyboards/synth sounds a little dated now. 5150 as a song is probably one of my favs but as a whole album I think it was the worst VH/Hagar album... I love Without You, One I want, Year to the Day, Ballot or the Bullet and How Many Say I sound slike a good Irish drinking song along after 10 pints of fine lager!

Though I do hate to keep bringing this thread back to life, I have to say this:
I'm listening to 5150 right now. It just doesn't do it for me. I think it's pretty homogenous and trite. That is no way a knock against anyone that loves this record because obviously this is one of their most popular and well-regarded albums, but it just doesn't do it. There's some great guitar work on here, there's some exciting drumming, but I don't like the way it "sounds" (it seems really processed, really solid state to me which is weird because Ed is such an analog guy) and I think it sounds too much like generic Sammy stuff...I don't know...it's just my opinion.
The only things that really jump out are WCTBL, Dreams, 5150 is ok, Love Walks In is ok and that's pretty much it.
Bad to the Bone
07.06.06, 03:23 AM
I listened to III the other day, it's too bad that some of that stuff just didn't work out, there are some riffs on there that are incredible but for some reason it just does not work. Seems like on 5150 everything worked, I can jam that cd everyday and not get tired of it.
There's some really kick ass guitar work in 3, but I've got to go with 5150 on this one.
One problem with 5150 for me is that it sounds thin. I don't like Alex's drum sound in it either.

I suppose it's fitting that this thread gets brought back up seeing as how I drug it out of the basement month before last or whatever...but I have to comment on this again...
I'm FORCING myself to listen to 5150 again. It sounds so sterile, impotent even. There are some really cool "guitar moments" I guess, but it's just such an uneventful album.
Question: those of you that are obviously passionate about this album...can you ascertain whether your love stems from the quality of the music itself or from a nostalgic/philosophical/emotional connection you have with the album because it was playing during your "glory days?" AND IN NO WAY do I mean that as a slight to anyone. We ALL have music that without regard for it's artistic merit, we hold in a very intimate special regard because of the moments and memories in our lives of which it is an intrinsic part.
To me, even with all the faults I see in it, VHIII is so much more exciting and dramatic. It's so much more compelling, ESPECIALLY given the fact that it is a VH album. I vascilate with where I place VHIII in my list of favourite VH albums, but it is certainly always among the top two or three. 5150 and OU812 fight for last place.
the_jake5150
07.29.06, 02:30 AM
This thread has reached the lines of stupidity. 5150 and VHIII can't be compared. You don't compare food to shit, do you?
And I'm not saying that VHIII is shit but it's not in the same level as 5150.
I'm shocked that this was even a thred! :wtf: Take Summer Nights, Good Enough, 5150, Dreams & WCTBL, then take your 5 least favorite VH tunes either CVH or Van Hagar, shake them up into one album and it still beats III.
I'm not a III basher. I like Year to the Day, Ballot or the Bullet. Even can tolerate the album as a whole, but it's no 5150. No way!
The J Man
07.29.06, 11:08 AM
5150 makes me go "What the fuck?" Because there's no free-spirit-humor on the album...
Van Halen III makes me go "What the fuck?" Because it's an imitation on Van Hagar, yet for some odd reason I hear potential, if they could have turned some of that political humor they had on that album to a different direction of humor, that would have been gold.
The lyrics on the 5150 album are lame, "Good Enough," is a cheap imitation of something Dave would write. People say that Hagar wasn't trying to replace Dave but it sure as hell sounded like it on that album, and man did it show. There are three songs I can stand on that album, "Summer Nights," "Best of Both Worlds," because basically it's a ripoff of AC/DC and "5150," because of the breakdowns that are similar to "House of Pain."
YO!Edward
07.29.06, 03:01 PM
Both albums are similar in the sense that they marked a departure from the bands previous sound. Both grab you by the balls and throw you across the room. 5150 with Sammys scream of 'HELLLOOOOOOOOOO BAAAAAAAABY' and Van Halen 3 (after Neworld) with Alexs drumming, the undulating metal pick slide down the frets and Garys 'HEY YOU! Wake up! Get yourself together!'
Like a mother loves her sons equally, despite their differences, I would have to say BOTH albums are a thing of beauty. It just pains me that Van Halen 3 is not recognised or acknowledged for what it is, an album of sheer unadulterated musical finesse, style and bravery.
